Trish,I love lasagna and potpie. When my blood sugar stabilizes I would like some lasagna. My blood sugar spiked back over 200 But like Mad said its from the steroid and I have to wait it out.

We are at the casino. I feel good so why not. I walked around with him for a while. I think I needed that. Now I'm in the food court.

I think you should just add some veggies to whatever DH cooks. No need to do strict low carb. You stay away from sugar and your blood sugar is good. Getting the fluid off will make you feel so much better. All in due time. I'm glad you like your doctors. I like the doctor who is doing my upcoming procedure. I do not like the kidney doctor and will only go to see him if my upcoming blood work shows a problem. I am peeing good and think I'm ok.

I hope DH wants to go home soon. I'm freezing.

I ended up eating 1245 calories but not near enough protein. DH and I are talking about how I need to eat.

Carol Sue I'm glad you felt good enough to go to the casino. I hope you will be able to go home before you get too tired.

Wannabehealthy 07-30-2023 09:42 PM

We came home right after I posted my last post. It was still daylight. DH had fun and was happy. He broke even. It was very cold in there and I even had a sweater on. I think they had the air condition on too high because of the very hot days we had in the past week. But its only in the low 80s now. Q

I'm glad you are discussing how you need to eat. You do need more protein for healing. I hope it works out for you.

TamTam 07-31-2023 12:41 PM

Good morning all! Been away for a few days. My blood glucose is still doing better than it used to. I just received and order of Skinny Syrups to add flavoring to my water, I put 1 tbsp in 20 oz of water and it was too sweet! Will be adding less next time. I am also starting to put Allulose in my protein shakes and afternoon yogurt. Allulose is an artificial sweetener that is supposed to be good for diabetics and help with weight loss, it works similar to Mourjano. I plan on using 1.5 tsp/2 times per day, but am starting at .05 tsp two times a day to give my body time to adjust. Will keep you updated on how and if it works. We will be getting a new computer system at work, so if I am away for a few days, I will be trying to learn how to use it. We have been having un-bearable heat here! Have a blessed day all.

Well, I'm back once again. Still hanging in there and things are improving. My weight has been fluctuating between the same couple of pounds for the past couple of weeks, but i'm still determined to stay on track. I have been getting back to my intermittent fasting and paying closer attention to what i've been eating. I haven't been tracking or measuring my foods though, and unfortunately, I won't lose much if I don't. My portion perception is hopelessly off. I have been cooking though, which is absolutely necessary for any weight control, so that has helped not only the weight but my blood sugar as well. I don't eat my first meal until noon, so I have started checking my FBS then. It was down to 106 this morning! It has been between 103-128 the past couple of weeks. My doctor added glipizide twice a day when I was sick and wanted me to continue until my next a1c. However, I have even had some in the 80's which I haven't seen in quite a while. Seems like the steroids are gone but it's obvious that my diet is the real culprit of this success. If only I could maintain it long term, I could get off all the diabetes medications. One step at a time.

Carol Sue, I'm so sorry to hear you were in the hospital, but I am glad you are back at home. Hopefully, the effects of the new diuretic has tapered off and you can get back to losing more than water weight. I'm also glad those steroids seem to be moving out of your system. It took months for my blood sugar to go back down.

Trish, I've been praying for your health, and that you will be able to eat more and that your neuropathy will be controlled.

pattygirl63 07-31-2023 02:38 PM

Carol Sue I hope you are either resting today after your busy day at casino or maybe you and DH got out this morning. I always wonder about you when you haven't posted not that you have to post everyday as you may not feel like it.

TamTam Hope your new sweeteners work well for you. Good luck learning a new computer system. It would be a challenge for me.

Momtopands Thanks for your prayers. They are appreciated. It is good to see your BS settling down. Eating healthy is complicated some time but necessary which we all are very much aware of.

Not going to get drivers license yet. Because I will be 80 this year I have to make an appointment because I have to go in for eye test which is no problem but they probably will do some other tests to check my reflexes etc. I don't think they would renew them right now so I probably will have to just get an ID card. My birthday will be in the middle of August 2 days before my 21 day cycle ends on my last chemo.

Hope every body has a good day.

Wannabehealthy 07-31-2023 05:32 PM

Trish, I did post this morning but I don't see it here so I guess it didn't save.

I am back to normal, the way I was before the hospital. My blood pressure is surprisingly good. My blood sugar was down to 124 this morning but it spikes right up over 200 again. I dont like that its doing damage but I don't know what I can do except just wait.

I remember when my BILs doctor told him to cut back on sodium he went overboard and it got too low and he had 2 seizures and had to go to the hospital. So I am going to start using a bit of salt. I can eat a lot of foods without salt but as hard as I tried I can't get used to eggs without salt. And I'm drinking a little more water than I was, but not as much as I used to drink. I read over my release papers from the hospital and there was a page where they were supposed to indicate how much fluid I am allowed to have but they didn't fill it in. So I am using water to take my meds and drinking some when thirsty. Even though I am taking the water pill I'm not peeing very much but this water pill is milder than Lasix.

We went out this morning to Wal-Mart and Goodwill. I am walking better and feeling better over all. I go to my PCP on Aug 3.

TamTam, someone else online mentioned Allulose too. I will look it up and see what I can learn. I might be interested.

Good luck learning the new computer. I'm glad that's not me!

Momtopands, I hate hearing how long it took for your blood sugar to come down. I'm glad you are doing so well, thought.

momtopands 08-01-2023 12:10 AM

Carol Sue, the thing with sodium(and potassium), is that there needs to be a balance between the two. Having a diet with no sodium, probably threw off that balance(required for proper heart function) and led to his seizures. Most of us have way too much sodium in our diets. So cutting it back is what is needed, not total abstinence. Carbs are the same way, even for diabetics. Carbs are necessary for brain function, we just don't need to eat as much as the average American does. I would contact your doctor's office and find out exactly how much fluid you should be taking in. Water is also required for human survival, it just needs to be balanced with your intake of nutrients. You can also ask them about the acceptable amount of sodium per day since it's in nearly everything you buy. They should be able to tell you exactly their expectation. Ok, i'm off of my nurse education soap box!

Wannabehealthy 08-01-2023 06:45 AM

Momtopands, we are lucky to have 2 nurses posting on our thread. Fatmad is a nurse, too. The hospital gave me some paperwork to bring home about sodium and fluids. I don't eat much processed foods. I eat mostly plain whole foods without much seasoning. And I don't like sauces or gravies. I get bloodwork done twice a year and my electrolytes are always good. I think this problem started because of my aortic valve that isn't working. Hopefully, once they take care of that my situation will improve.

Vitals are good again this morning. I'm just sitting here enjoying a cup of tea, waiting for my diuretic to kick in!

pattygirl63 08-01-2023 12:07 PM

I typed a post last night and hit some button and lost the whole thing and was too tired to write again.

momtopands I agree with Carol Sue that I like having nurses on here. My niece recently became a RN and she had worked as a social worker with the American Cancert Assoc and came and gave me so much helpful information to help me through this. Now she is so busy working that I don't get to talk to her much and I really miss her. I have a bunch of new problems caused from the chemotherapy which I hope will reverse itself after this last treatment. Swelling has been a thing that got worse and neuropathy symptoms have popped up both from one of the chemo medications. I've been reading about the DASH Diet and signed up for the Eating Well Newsletter and I'm learning how important some carbs are in our woe. When I saw my Primary doc, he told me the reason they had the tube down my throat and had me on a clear liquid diet was that my bowels stopped working. Now that I'm eating fruit that has completely cleared up without laxatives.

Carol Sue I'm glad to hear you are feeling better and walking better. That is good news. I read we need to be sure we eat more potassium than sodium so I've decided to go back to eating avocados each day. I see pictures of avocado halves with a fried egg on top that looks absolutely delicious. Sometimes the slice the avocado in smaller pieces or make guacamole and spread it on a slice of toast with a fried egg on top that looks good too. In SC I ate 1 whole avocado a day and remember telling DH I couldn't remember why I did that but it sure made me feel good. You like avocados too so you might be able to balance things with that too.

I guess my walking is getting better too. Last night I got up out of my recliner to go to the bathroom and saw a straw on my little table that I had forgotten to take to the kitchen to be washed and decided to just throw it in the sink as I walked by the bar which is in front of the sink. I threw it in the sink and suddenly realized that I didn't have my walker. My house is so compact and wall to wall furniture (DH won't part with anything) that there isn't many places I could walk without holding on to something, so I was holding on to the bar and the recliner, etc. I was shocked when I realized I wasn't using the walker. DH laughed and asked me if maybe this was the sign of things to come. This morning I used my cane to do a few things moving around here in the living room and it actually felt good using the cane instead of the walker. You know I have had a fear of falling because of the falls I've had and I really fight to get over that fear because Daddy never conquered it. His therapist told me he thought Daddy could walk with a walker but he was always afraid he was going to fall. That is why he ended up in the wheelchair for the last few years of his life. I don't want to do that.

Don't know what we are going to eat today but I suspect it will be Chinese since DH is going to Sam's. I wish he would get something beside sweet n sour chicken. I could order something different but they give so much food that we get one meal and share it. This another reason that I couldn't do keto because our once a week takeout would blow it so it is easier to just count calories and try to eat as healthy as possible.

TamTam Hope the new computer system isn't too difficult.

Fatmad I'm sure you are enjoying your time with your DDs.

Have a great day everybody.

Wannabehealthy 08-01-2023 12:58 PM

Trish, you sound more upbeat today, as if you are feeling more positive about your future. Thats good. Its encouraging that you are able to maneuver around and forget you don't have your walker. I have 2 that I've never used. Sometimes I wish I had the one with the seat at the casino but DH said I should wait till I really need it. He thinks if I get used to it I will always need it and he might be right.

I'm sorry you are still having the swelling and neurapathy. I think once you get rid of the fluid retention things will turn around for you. Better days are ahead.

The kidney doctors office called today and made an appointment. She had me go for bloodwork today instead of waiting until the 10th. I hope this will show that my kidneys are back to normal. Even though I'm taking the water pill I am not peeing nearly as much as I used to. I used to pee excessively. My incontinence is almost gone. I dont want to have to worry about kidney issues when I never had them before. I just want a better quality of life after going through all this. Im sure you feel the same way.

A while back I was making avocado with an egg in the middle. I cut it in half, left the peel on then cut a nice slice. I browned the first side then turned it over and quickly cracked the egg into the hole. I put a lid on the pan to finish cooking it. Leaving the peel on helps it hold together, then you could take the peel off before you eat it.

I like to buy the bag of small avocados but then they get ripe all at once. I haven't had them for a good while.

pattygirl63 08-01-2023 09:46 PM

As I suspected DH got Chinese sweet n sour chicken. I went crazy with carbs etc today. The only good thing is my protein and sodium was good. DH got me 2 bags of avocados from Sam's. They are as hard as a rock right now but I will start the lower carb Saturday after my last chemo treatment this Friday. My baby sister says she allows herself a pig out day but not sure if that is once a week or once a month. I need to talk to her about that. She lost weight on DASH Diet and now she does low fat low carb for maintenance. Any way tomorrow will be a better eating day.

Wannabehealthy 08-01-2023 11:57 PM

Sweet and Sour chicken is my favorite, Trish. I dont get to eat Chinese often because DH doesn't like it. When we used to go to the mall we would eat in the food court and I would get something there. They have an Asian booth at the casino but its not as good as a Chinese restaurant.

It sounds like you have a good plan for eating after chemo is over. Just think, you have been going through this treatment for what? 6 months? And its finally coming to an end. Bless you. I know you just want to get on with your life.

I'm looking forward to seeing my blood test results and hope my kidneys are ok. I dont know how I feel about going through this treatment for my heart if I'm just going to have screwed up kidneys.

I was craving broccoli so I just cooked some. Who craves broccoli?? I was reading about how its alkaline and that's good. I bought some of that Parkay spray to use on my vegetables because I buy salted butter.

DH already went to bed so I will join him.

Wannabehealthy 08-02-2023 10:57 AM

According to Fitbit, I fell asleep at 1:30 and slept straight thru until 6:25. I haven't done that in ages. I usually wake up every 2 hours or so. I was so shocked to wake up and see sunlight around the edge of the curtain.

This morning I had over easy eggs and SL toast. DH had a cup of coffee and 3 Double stuff Oreos. This is how different we eat.

My blood sugar might be turning around, but every time I say that it spikes. Yesterday it was spiking into the 200s, instead of the 300s. This morning fasting was 97! Woohoo!! After my cup of tea it went up to 150 and after eggs and toast its 152. I will take my normal dose of G and see what happens.

I am gradually drinking more water. When I go to the doctor tomorrow I will discuss this with him to see what he thinks. I notice no fluid retention, BP is very good.

Today is my DGS 15th birthday. They are celebrating on Saturday with lunch at their house. I will probably eat before I go because I don't know what they will have that I can eat.

I feel good.

pattygirl63 08-02-2023 01:11 PM

Carol Sue Sounds like things are falling in place for you. I'm curious to hear how much fluid the kidney doc recommends. So glad you are feeling better.

I think I might could sleep through the night if I didn't wake up not only having to go to the bathroom but I also wake up in a sweat so bad that my gown is wet in places . DS reminded me that is because my hormones are crazy right now due to the hysterectomy. She said they will settle down. So I ordered a bottle of black cohosh to help with that. I took it when I went through the change and DS said she had heard of women who had a hysterectomy take it too. I hope it will help. Also I am trying to get most of my fluids drank early enough so maybe I can start sleeping all night without having to go potty. At least I only had tp get up once the past 2 nights. I need to sweat all this excess fluid off but I wish it was during the day istead of 3 or 4 in the morning.

I have no idea what we are eating today since we didn't discuss it last night. I had my usual half c orange juice that I take with my iron pill. DH DD told me they don't know why but drinking orange juice with the iron pill causes the iron to work better. Since then I read that it can be any citrus fruit or juice. Orange juice was something I really enjoyed having in the hospital. I had a banana and a chocolate protein shake for breakfast. DH bought me 10 large avocados from Sam's but I have no idea when one will be soft enough to eat. I hope they don't ripen all at the same time. I do know that I will have a salad regardless of what we eat.

Have nice day everyone.
