Trish, I'm not sure I understand about socks that leave your toes free. I will look at DocSocs. I rarely wear socks. The ones I have bind my leg and leave indentations, but I won't buy the diabetic socks because I don't wear socks often enough. I wear some dress socks if I wear dressier shoes, or if I'm wearing regular sneakers, but I usually wear slip on sneakers with no socks. DH wears only diabetic socks even though he is not diabetic because socks leave an indentation on his leg, also. I have a couple pairs of compression knee highs, black and tan. I haven't worn them in years.

We have had the discussion before that your plan doesn't have to have a name. You can call it "CAD-like" or "South Beach-like" to mean that you are eating similar to those plans. I call my WOE low carb but I fall off plan almost every day, but it is my intention to eat low carb and IF. I am not a good example of how to diet. LOL

I don't know what to think of your nightly nausea. Maybe your body is just used to having food. Maybe a couple saltine crackers? I agree that our bodies become accustomed to receiving food at certain times and we should mix things up.

Wannabehealthy 11-15-2018 11:40 AM

I looked at the DocSocs so I understand the toes being free. While looking I saw some that were called Plantar Fasciatis compression sleeves and had an arch support in them. I could use them when I wear my dressier shoes that don't have an arch support. I wear my slip on sneakers with a heel cushion containing an arch support, but my dressier casual shoes do not have an arch support and the heel cushion makes them too tight. I have come to the conclusion that my arches are what's causing my problem, and wearing shoes without an arch support aggravates it.

I found some kielbassa in the freezer so I am making pork and sauerkraut for dinner. I have 3 pork loin chops, 2 pieces of kielbassa and 2 hot dogs, with a qt jar of my step-son's home made sauerkrautm mixed with sliced onions. That will not all be eaten at dinner but I will eat some leftover tomorrow.

I am also going back to eating kale. I bought some frozen and have been reading about the difference between fresh and frozen. Not a lot of benefits are lost from freezing, but I will probably buy a bag of baby kale once in a while so I can add it to salads. Not only do I notice the difference in my nails, but I read that the vit K is helpful with calcium deposits in the arteries and heart valves, which is the problem with my bad valve. It is known to prevent the deposits, and might help clear them, too. So I feel it can't hurt me and might help. I also want to eat some sauerkraut more often, but it loses a lot of it's value when cooked. So I will buy some smaller cans of sauerkraut and keep it in a contain in the refrigerator.

My pain level is low today. I am back to taking my supplements. I took Tylenol at bedtime last night but don't do that every night. I don't want to start depending on it.

pattygirl63 11-15-2018 03:13 PM

I looked up kale online and found that eating it raw can cause digestive problems for some people. It suggested eating it steamed. However, it also talked about some of the benefits and suggested eating it about 2x a week so I will do that. I've been eating it in my salad but still would love the benefits. She even said not to boil it unless you are going to drink the broth because it seems to be such a great cancer prevention food.

Carol Sue I know I don't have to name my plan. Eating healthy along with IF is really my main goal.

DS and I talked this morning and it looks like it will only be her, BIL, DH and me at her daughter's for Thanksgiving along with her DH. We can't take Daddy with us because none of us can get him in and out of the car. I text baby sister today to tell her that since he has 3 big boys there and they can probably get him that we would not be upset if they took him to their house. He would enjoy that better with all his little great grandchildren there. I imagine my nephew that I asked to get him will want to go to his Mama's if he isn't working and he will feel free to take him there.

This means there will just be 6 of us at my nieces so I'm not going to cook a ham. She is cooking a turkey and veggies and my BIL and DS are making stuffing and potatoes. So I will take the rolls and make the homemade cranberry sauce and will think about one other dish I can take, but not sure what. This will work out better for me since we have 2 doctor's appt. for Daddy this week and one is the afternoon before Thanksgiving.

I haven't ordered the compression sock because I only wear socks when the weather gets really cold and not sure if I would wear them otherwise. That is something I would have really think about.
I had already ordered the diabetic sock that I can wear with my dressier shoes when I go to church and I already have some regular diabetic socks to wear around the house during those extremely cold days. Otherwise I don't like to wear sock and wear nice flip flops that are comfortable to my feet that I alternate wearing around the house. So I won't be getting the compression ones for now.
I have a pair of socks I bought one time that fits really tight and I just don't like anything like that tight feeling around my feet. Strange person I am. LOL

Trish the baby kale is much like baby spinach. I like it in my salad but DH does not. When I cook ita med. I guess it's steamed. I saute onion in butter then add the kale with a couple tbs of water put a lid on until it wilts.I also like to crumble stone Feta cheese. It offsets the bitterness of the kale. If I have mushrooms I will slice them and saute with the onion.

My pork and sauerkraut was great!

pattygirl63 11-15-2018 06:16 PM

I need to find a time to go to Target and see what they have in veggies and fruit. I usually go to HEB (local store), but they don't carry frozen kale and I'm surprised they don't carry baby kale. So I might need to make it a point to go to Target. Target is across the street from the local store, but I'm usually coming from seeing Daddy and rushing to get back home. It is just so easy to go where we get used to shopping because we learn the store. Thanks for the suggestion on the kale. I can also get the benefit of it by just adding it to an omelet on days I eat eggs.

I ate earlier so that I could go longer between my 2 meals and started feeling really rough by the time I got ready to cook so I checked it while feeling that way and bs was 103. I felt good about that and didn't do anything to stop it. I remember you mentioning on here Carol Sue that it is good if we don't do anything when it goes down. Since I new it wasn't a super low event, I decided to just go ahead and make our lunch. I changed the menu some because I think I've been making too much food. DH had his fish with salad and Great Northern beans and I had mine with salad and green beans. I did have a dark chocolate square and pecans. I went on MFP to make the changes from what I had planned on having and I had brought my calories down to below 1200. I hope by not eating any kale and being very careful that I won't have to have a snack. But at least I do have room for something if I have to eat. If I do, I'll just have string cheese again with a couple of saltine crackers.

Edited: Just wanted to share that I decided to have a snack around 6 to hopefully keep from having stomach problems. I have very tiny yellow potatos and cheese stick which brought my calories to 1287 calories. This way I could also take the 3rd GOLO pill as well as the 3rd berberine. Hopefully this will keep me from having the nausea.

Wt 197 FBG 104 It was in the 90s overnight. I'm pleased with that number. I ate some potato chips around 6:30 because DH was eating them, but I had nothing after that, not even to drink.

It sound like you had a very good food day, Trish. I think eventually you will not get that feeling with your lower blood sugar once your body adjusts. It is not really dangerously low unless it goes below 70 I believe. I don't think I would let mine get below 80 because of the Glimiperide, which could easily drive it lower, but without those type of meds, you should get a liver dump before it reaches that point.

The bad thing about not eating at night is I feel pretty hungry when I get up. I don't really want to get into the habit of eating this early. I want to extend my fast a little longer. Once I have a cup of coffee the hunger subsides for a while.

We have 2 Target stores within 20 miles, one within 5 miles, but neither of them have produce or meat, just regular grocery, frozen and dairy. They have frozen veggies, but just the basics. I have a hard time finding frozen kale. Walmart used to have it but this time they didn't. Either they stopped carrying it or were just out of it. The regular grocery 1 mile from our home has it but it doesn't seem that they have much of a turnover and the bags are sometimes frozen solid, like they're old. Better than nothing. Not all stores have the bags of baby kale either. I guess people around here don't like it much.

This morning we have to take the dog for his haircut. I really hate this. He fights it all the way. We stay there while they groom him because DH has to hold onto his head sometimes because he snaps at the groomer. I don't want him to bite her, although I think they do get bit from time to time. I just don't want it to be my dog doing the biting. I should have gotten a dog that sheds, instead of one that needs to be groomed, but all 6 of the dogs we've had had to be groomed. No shedders. I guess that's the type of dog we're attracted to. When we first got him we took him to the groomer we went to for years and she called us 5 minutes later to come get him because he was flipping out on her, barking and growling, snapping. When we got there to pick him up he was fine, but she refused to do him. She recommended the shop we go to now as they seem to be able to deal with problem dogs. The woman who does our dog seems like a very tough woman. Hard. I would hate to have her on my bad side. She and her husband are involved in the local shelter and also with animal rescue. They have gone to disaster areas and rescued dogs that have been separated from their owners. So I guess they really love animals, but people, not so much. LOL I can't wait until this is over and my dog will look so nice.....for a few months. Then we do it all over again in the spring.

Pat: Ginger tea might help with the nausea, instead of crackers. Peppermint tea is helpful as well.

fatmad 11-16-2018 08:50 AM

Went for my blood work this morning, but it took about 15 minutes to clear off the car. When i got home did quite a bit of shovelling. Its still snowing a bit. Its not supposed to last too long, but I hope for a little ski this afternoon. we got about 4 inches total to judge by the snow on top of the hot tub.
I am excited about the a1c and I can check my results this afternoon, on line. Monday is the liver ultrasound and see the doctor on Tuesday. Really hoping for good results all around.
I don't know if we can load photos on here. I did a before and after for "facelift Friday" on the IDM facebook page, first time. Until I did the two photos, I really didn't realize that I had lost weight in the face too. I don't think I look younger, but I do look thinner.
If only I can break this plateau. I wound up doing OMAD yesterday, had supper with DH, so did a 23 hr fast. I plan 2MAD today, and maybe a fast or OMAD again tomorrow.
Carol; that fasting BG is terrific, you can be pleased with that. It makes a big difference for you not eating at night.
Trish, sounds like your plans for TG are coming together, and I hope your father can get out and see the grandkids that day. (or is that great-grandkids? must be)
Have a happy Friday friends.

pattygirl63 11-16-2018 10:18 AM

Quick flyby. TG plans changed again. Baby sister text last night that her boys want to go to our nieces for TG so I am back to cooking a ham. Anyone have an idea of how to cook a ham. I forgot that DN hubby is allergic to pineapple. I've always used pineapple and cherries. I think there is an orange glaze that will do the same but have check out. Since we all eat in a way that fits Mediterranean diet, I will check o see what they recommend.

IdealProteinNewbie Thanks for the reminder of the ginger tea. The peppermint actually makes things worse for me.

FBS this morning is 135 and weight down to 217.8.

Headed out for busy Friday morning.

Trish, I buy a fully cooked whole ham and have the butcher cut it in half. I buy semi-boneless but you can get boneless or spiral sliced. If you google "how to bake a fully cooked ham" you will get a lot of instructions and/or videos on Youtube. I put a meat thermometer in it or you can use an instant read thermometer. I usually buy a jar of glaze from the store. They have them displayed around the hams.

I got a call from the doctor's office that my blood work was "acceptable." Last time, my A1c was 7.4 but that was after being in the hospital and having those horrible blood sugar spikes. This time it is down to 6.7. Yay. I wanted it below 7. I hope for it to go even lower next time. Last time my cholesterol was 124. I cut my dose of meds in half and now it is 159, which is still good. So I will continue the lower dose. She didn't mention other results so I will see them on Monday.

We got the dog groomed, and he was better than usual. I think he's getting used to her.

Now we're getting ready to go to the casino.

Wannabehealthy 11-16-2018 11:02 AM

Mad, you can load a photo here if you click on the little envelope , but I don't know how to do it. I only know how to load pics if there is an option to browse on your computer, but this requires a URL, which I don't know how to do.

pattygirl63 11-16-2018 08:57 PM

I had another really nice visit with my Daddy. Somehow he turns his phone off and we can't get him but I don't worry about him much any more when it happens because I know if anything was wrong they would call one of us girls. I couldn't call to ask him what he would want me to take him to eat, so I stopped by Long John Silvers and got him 2 pieces of fish and 3 shrimp with tartar sauce. It is amazing how his eating has changed now that he lives there and gets 3 meals a day. He doesn't et as much. He ate both fish and only 1 of the shrimp. I noticed he likes the crumbs and put them in the tartar sauce and at that. I stopped at a convenient store on the way and got him a Big Red drink which is his favorite. So he was happy.

I think I've mentioned before that Daddy was a minister. I've been reading and studying from the Jewish Torah I bought before we moved back to TX. It has a commentary type explanations at the bottom of the page to explain the scriptures like my new Amplified Bible does. As I read the Torah, I have a better understanding of what I know and learn from the Amplified Bible in the New Testament that I have learned throughout my life and why we believe some of the things we believe as Christians. As I learn some of these things, I discuss it with Daddy and I love how he loves discussing it with me. It has given us a new and closer relationship/connection than we haven't had in the past. He used to seem to resent anything I learned from someone other than him, but that has all changed. It is really nice.

I have decided that that I'm not going to make cranberry sauce to take to my nieces. I just don't have time to do all that right now. If TG was at the end of the month like it usually is, I could do more and might even have it here, but there is no time for that with having to make appointments with Daddy. So I'm just going to buy the canned Jellied type which I think that is what they all like. I'll make the homemade sauce for myself later. I did decide to make a German Chocolate cake and take it and I might pick up a few pies since baby sisters boys are going to be there. As much as I hate going to the store 2 or 3 days before TG, I am going to go by Walmart when I leave Daddy's CHF appointment Monday after noon and buy the ham, cranberry sauce and rolls. I will make the cake Tuesday and cook the ham TG morning.

fatmad I believe you are going to get great results from all your tests too. You have done so well.

Carol Sue Congratulations on the 6.7 A1c. I knew it was going to be good. My FBS is getting better but I read another article about the statins. I told my doctor last time I saw him that I would take it as long as it didn't affect my FBS. I am very much considering stopping the statin. I am still convinced that DH statin meds are the reason he is diabetic. In fact, the article I read said if your not diabetic and you take statins, you will become diabetic. So I do not plan to refill my statin again. I know the risks, but you know SC doc had me on fenofibrate and one day he said he didn't want me taking it any more. He said that he had me on it to prevent heart attacks and strokes, but they now think it causes them instead. I figure that if I can get my cholesterol down with the foods I eat and lower the A1c and lose the weight, my risks of heart attacks and stroke will be less. I am willing to take the chance rather than allow the diabetes to become worse. It is my choice and I don't think having a worse diabetes isn't worth the risk of taking the statin.

You have obviously found what works for you and I'm sure things will continue to improve.

Calories today were 1541 and high fat and carbs. I made homemade pizza. I didn't have the turkey sausage I usually have. I didn't know I was out of it. So I made it with 3 cheeses and loaded it with veggies besides the salad I had. Of course everything is estimated since I can't do it exact on MFP. I did get 20 minutes on the recumbent bike today. I've done 4 days exercise and I think I will take a break for the weekend as my leg gave way once before I left the house this morning. I didn't fall but it could have been a warning not to do too much to fast. I will probably cook fish again so we can have 2 servings of fish this week and that will offset the pizza meal. I am staying with the 6 to 8 hr eating window and the exercise so hopefully that will help.

fatmad 11-17-2018 07:17 AM

Enjoyed my "night off" last evening with cheese and crackers, hard cider and some home made, relatively low sugar apple crisp. But that was the treat, and now I will be fasting today. DD is coming this afternoon and we have a concert tonight, nothing that needs to change me fasting.
Carol I am so glad you have got that a1c down to a reasonable level. Much better. Keep it up!
Trish, glad you enjoyed your visit with your father, and hope the TG plans work out well. These busy family gatherings can be fun, not just stressful, so I hope you all have a good week.

Wannabehealthy 11-17-2018 12:19 PM

Step daughter texted me all excited about the clothes I gave her. Many of the tops still had tags on them, as I buy things without trying them on, and if they are tight, I keep them thinking I will lose weight instead of returning them. The jeans were too big for her, which I suspected they might, and too small for her friend, so she might find someone they fit or donate them. They were also brand new. I wish there was a place around here where you could donate clothes and they GIVE them to people who need them, instead of selling them. There are places like that in Pittsburgh but that's too far from us.

I am very happy that my A1c is below 7, and so is the doctor, but I still want it to go lower. I don't feel I have to have a 5, but a low 6 would be good. I had a 5 one time. I know I am still eating foods that spike my blood sugar, just not as much and not as often. There were a few years when I only allowed myself a DQ Cone once a year. This year I have done it about 10 times. Also, I'm eating the pancakes etc that DH makes, when I previously refused them. It's little things like that that are making the difference. To me, a treat means a couple times a year, not a couple times a month.

Trish, I can't remember when I started the statin, but I don't think it caused my diabetes, but it might have contributed. My diabetes was diagnosed at the same time as my heart surgery, but I already had heart disease before that and might have been taking the statin already. I read that it can raise blood sugar, but I think the rise is slight and the benefits of the statins are more important that a slight rise in blood sugar. I also take a BP med that raises blood sugar, but I think that is also a slight rise. I know I cannot blame my diabetes on either of these meds. I gained 80 lbs, eating way too much of whatever I wanted over a few years and not exercising. I saw it happening but didn't do anything to stop it. This is what caused my insulin resistance, which eventually led to full blown diabetes. The only think that's going to change this is for me to stop putting unneeded food in my mouth.

I'm not saying that everyone's situation is the same as mine. Your DH is not overweight, and your Diabetes is not as severe as mine, so statins could have contributed for both of you.

I used to make home made pizza when the kids were still here, often, on Saturdays. We never got take out pizza. I still have my big pizza pans I used. I sometimes used pizza crust mix or even frozen bread dough, and bought jarred sauce and shredded cheese. The only toppings I used were pepperoni and mushrooms. I stopped doing that after the kids moved out and DH started liking pizza shop pizza. I can't really eat the crust anymore as it's one of the worst things that spikes blood sugar for me. Into the high 200s!!! I eat it occasionally when DH gets it, but try to get something for myself that will satisfy me. I have to be really strong to resist things like pizza and ice cream.

Mad, I love cheese and crackers. I had to stop buying crackers because I was starting to eat them every night. I buy a box of Ritz around the holidays for cheese balls and spreads and when the box is gone I don't buy more until the next holiday. I do eat them at my DIL's. She is also big on cheese and crackers and always serves them as a snack when we are there. I do have a box of crackers she introduced me to but they are not open yet. They are very thin so not many carbs, but just something to put the cheese on.I know the minute I open them I will eat the whole box. LOL I have changed my eating a lot but still have far to go.

I also like hummus with celery sticks and pepper strips, but I never think to eat that. It's much healthier.
