I had the procedure done yesterday and he couldn't go up far enough because there was a blockage. I had to come home and use the prescription drink last night and this morning and I go back at 2 pm to have the procedure done again. I'm praying I get cleaned out enough that he can finish the test. The RN told me that he is probably going to put me on a fiber diet. Interesting isn't it?

Oh, my! I've been waiting to hear from you and was hoping to hear that everything was fine. I wonder what the blockage is? I hope they tell you and I hope it's nothing serious. A fiber diet might be beneficial, you never know. You are in my prayers, Trish!

Well, today worked out better. In fact, I was in and out much sooner than yesterday. The removed one polyp and will get results on it next week. They said they will call me. I have diverticulosis and have to be on a high fiber diet. I guess that takes care of me deciding how I'm going to eat. The doctor told my husband that I can eat popcorn but must be sure to chew it almost to paste and same with nuts and seeds. That explains some of the issues I have had. Now I know what to do and will be reading up on it more on line. I will just have to learn how to deal with it.
As much as I didn't want to do it, I'm just as glad that I did. I feel like I have answers that I needed. I now know what I'm dealing with and I can learn how to treat it. Overall it went well. |
Well, Trish, it could be much worse. I had diverticulitis that perforated and that's how I ended up having my bowel surgery and had the colostomy bag for a while. I sure hope that doesn't happen to you! As long as you follow the doctor's orders, you should be fine. Many people have it and are fine. I think it's good that you had this done and know where you stand. I am praying for good results with the polyp.
Did they give you a specific diet, or just tell you high fiber. I am curious as to what they want you to eat. They told me after my surgery that the part with the diverticulitis was removed, but I could get it again. I really love popcorn. I tried the hullless popcorn, but it is not really popcorn. Just not the same. |
Carol Sue Thanks for the prayers. Yes, he did give me a diet that they got from
http://www.dietsite.com/dt/diets/eat.../highfiber.asp I haven't gone there yet to look at the website to see if I can find more info, but thought you might want to check it out. They want me to eat fruits, veggies and grains and beans. DH has been a real sweetheart taking care of me through this and he says he doesn't eat enough fiber either and knows it is important for us both. He wants to do it with me. That will help a lot if we do it together. |
I clicked on the link and a blank page came up.

Hi Carolr. Good to see you here!
Trish, the link you gave didn't work for me either. I copied it and pasted it in my browser and it brought me to a pdf for a Senior Fiber Diet. I have it saved in my bookmarks and it comes up from there, but I can't seem to be able to post a working link either. Wonder what's up with that? Anyway, it look like a healthy diet. It's good that DH wants to do it with you. I think this will work out well for you. |
I typed this into my browser. See if this works.

Carolr and Carol Sue Sorry, it didn't work for me either. I did look up the eatingwell site and I didn't care for it because they have a lot of info but difficult to read or print. I will check out what you did.
I also thought about Prevention and WebMD will have info on it too. I don't have to look at them tonight though. I have to be at DD at 10:15 in the morning to take him to see primary doctor. I will also check out the one you shared Carol Sue. I did read that fiber is supposed to help keep the colon free so you don't get diverticulitis. Doctor said I could eat popcorn and nuts but they have to be chewed almost paste like. I'm not sure I could do that with popcorn. May not be worth the effort. When they told me that I had to eat high fiber, I told the RN I always tried to eat low carb and she said I could eat a lot of fruits and veggies to get most of he fiber in. Except for the fact that the diet says only 6 oz of protein, I still am wondering if the South Beach Diet will work or not with high fiber. If I started with phase 2. On Phase 2 I think you can have cereal like oat meal. I will have to check that out too. FB has a SBD support group that does the 2nd book. They say that a company bought South Beach Diet and now sends meals like Jenny Craig and some of the others and they don't answer any questions on that and have no info other than the original books. If I can do a high fiber on SBD, I may join it just to see what they are eating. Besides, I know beans are included on SBD and that is fiber. I better get to bed as it is 12:30. |
This plan I looked up is definitely something I could do. It does not really show quantities, just foods to eat and those to avoid. It's funny, but it lists popcorn, nuts and seeds as foods to eat, but that's probably because they are high fiber. I googled South Beach and this plan has a lot of similar foods to Phase 2. Phase 2 allows you to add in some starchy things that you could just substitute with whole grain. It would work, I'm sure. One thing it lists is Fiber One Cereal. I always have that in the house but don't eat it every day. I also use it to make Fiber One Haystacks for a snack once in a while.

Hey gang, was away without internet access for a bit. Home now, DD visiting until later today, so will just say hi, and blessings that Trish's colonoscopy went ok. Trish, the ww "full" diet might be a good option too.
Funny, when I was in nursing school, people with diverticulitis were told to stay away from popcorn, seeds, and raspberry and tomato because the little "seedy" parts could get trapped. Didn't make sense, it seemed that keeping things moving is the key. hope the change in plan works well for you Trish, and you find a good path. |
Mad, I heard that they no longer recommend avoiding the seedy things, but apparently Trish's doctor does. My doctor never mentioned it to me. Actually, he was just the surgeon who was on call when I needed emergency surgery. He specializes in bariatric surgery, so mine was not the norm for him. Good doctor, but didn't know a lot about my problem except how to repair it.

fatmad DH told me wrong. I have diverticulosis not diverticulitis. I'm glad they gave me the results when I left and read them. He really didn't know the difference. I think he did, but I think he got so worried about me that thinking of all the doctor said could happen that he forgot because later when I was reading the results to him, he said "I really don't know the difference, but I do know anything ending with -itus usually means infection. However, I won't be eating popcorn and I may just purchase nutbutters rather than eat the actual nuts or be sure they are crunched finely.
Carol Sue I think I could live on that plan too. However, I did join that SBD group on FB to get recipe ideas. Got to run. I want to get some bananas before I go to DD. We need them and I'm sure he does too. Y'all have a great day. |
Trish, I knew there was a difference between the two but wasn't sure what the difference was. Diverticulosis is when you have the pouches in the bowel, and diverticulitis is when they get infected. Right? I think a lot of people just call it diverticulitis as a general name. I had the pouches but didn't know it. When I started to get the pain, they were probably getting infected and inflamed, but I ignored it. I honestly think the reason they perforated is because the night before I was doing abdominal exercises that stretched out my abdomen. I think all that stretching that I wasn't used to caused the perforation. When I tried to explain that to the doctor who examined me in ER, he misunderstood and just said "No, this pain is not from exercising." DH told me if he was having the pain I was having he would have died because he never would have gone to the ER. He would have just thought it was a belly ache. I knew it was more than that! It was very painful!
My DH eats almonds, but he puts them in a food grinder and then eats them with a spoon. He just doesn't like eating whole nuts. |
Carol Sue Yes you are right. The doctor told DH that if they get infected or inflamed that they would try meds first, but if it went to paranitis (not sure about spelling) which I think is a tear in the colon. That is when they have to go in and remove part of the colon. From what I read, the fiber is supposed to stop the risk of that happening.
My weight was the same this morning as my ticker. My FBS was 129 which is good for not being on my meds. So I'm thrilled with that. Since I only had about 880 calories yesterday I've decided to continue with JUDDD using the high fiber diet. Counting yesterday as a DD and today is an UD and will be about 1800 calories only because we went to Taco Bell after DD doctor's appointment and I didn't choose wisely. I usually plan that meal ahead of time and obviously I didn't. Sodium will be extremely high today. DD primary took some of his meds off and has sent a not to the cardiologist telling him that he thinks he needs to take DD off of his Amiodarone and put him on something else for atrifib. He told us that it messes with the thyroid and causes fatigue. He thought over time DD would feel better, but he thinks it will just make him worse and he said that the bad thing is that it is a medicine that take a long time/months to get it out of your system. He upped his thyroid to 125 mg. He knows DD is not one to complain or a hypochondriac. DH is hungry so I guess I better get busy. We are having cod fish today with tiny green peas and salad. Sounds good and healthy. |
