DH got my computer working for the most part. Still can't do somethings yet, but minor things.
I'm not going to be doing CALP. I've been reading more on IF/LCHF and some of the veggies that CALP only lets you eat at RM is acceptable on low carb. So I'm not sure why they didn't allow them except for RM. Zucchini and squash for example are low carb veggies so I don't understand why you can't have it on CM. I don't want to add gobs of fat either. So I'm going back to IF/Low Carb. Back on Januvia too for pretty much the same reasons as before. I am reading an IF thread on another lowcarb site and finding loads of info on there for low carbing and IF. I'm learning that some If-ers are strict LCHF and others aren't. The main thing I want to do is get in the habit of eating healthy, lose weight and lower FBS. Ended the month with a 1 lb loss and FBS was unusually high this morning of 159. I read on the IF on FB that some diabetics who are doing IF/LCHF are having FBS readings between 135 - 160s and then all their other readings during the day are between 99 to 110s. I read somewhere that diabetics cannot handle large servings of protein. Thus I believe low carbing with IF is probably the best way for me. Keep my carbs around 40 to 50 grams. May go back to using MFP to keep up with things again. I've been doing pretty good with my eating so I'm not going to go backwards here. Still have about 2 mos before docs appt. and I there is time to get things looking good before I go in for bloodwork. Catch y'all tomorrow. |
Evening everyone
Just back from a family pig roast,,,,first time for that, for me. It was good. I think I did well eating wise. I did have a bit more meat and salad as a second helping but skipped cupcakes for dessert. I also fasted till noon this morning. Bg is right on tonite. Laurie, thanks for the tip...no I didn't re-test I just assumed it was the peanut butter,,,and no it wasn't a lot. I know most of you are in the states,,,,how come we use different numbers to test bg? I'm glad you all mention if your number is high or low ,,,, cuz I don't know how to compare them to mine. My dd and I stopped at a farm and bought fresh veggies and fruit...tomorrow may be a no meat day and maybe another fasting half day. Trish I wish I could get my carbs that low....even though my numbers have been great I get in about 100 carbs per day....for me I seem to need a crunch factor...and not from veggies all the time. I tend to look for 'cracker's for lunch. Baby steps will get me there. |
P.A. Maybe it is similar to using metric in CA but not in the US!
|
p.a. Here are two charts you might want to bookmark. The first one shows the comparison between the blood glucose levels.
https://www.joslin.org/info/conversi...onitoring.html The second one tells you what your average blood glucose was based on your A1c. http://coping.us/images/A1C_to_Blood...sion_table.pdf |
Trish, I agree with you about the squash. It is actually listed on Atkins as an allowed vegetable for Induction, at small quantities. This is why I tend not to like to follow a specific plan. Each plan has it's peculiarities. My version of CALP is to eat low carb at B and L and if I'm going to add some carb, do it at dinner. To me, a non-starchy vegetables is a vegetable and I include them in my CM. I cannot be so rigid. My first diet was before I had read any diet book, and I just ate smaller portions of everything and exercised and I lost weight. Right now I am following Carol's plan. It's somewhere between Atkins and CALP. I am actually on day 3 of sticking to my plan, and I'm starting to see the scale move. Finally. It seems to have more to do with the amount of food I'm eating rather than the type or when I eat. So I am with you on doing what suits you best. If you lose weight, than it's working and who cares what "plan" it is.
|
Carol Sue I agree. I think my plan is pretty much the same way. I may go days when I only do low carb and then throw a carb in one day at one meal and then sometime I'll have a few days in a row I will have a carb each day. I think Trish's Plan works best for Trish too. It goes back to personalizing the plan. I remember people arguing that CAD/CALP was not low carb, but it really is except that they do allow a dessert at a RM occasionally.
Besides, I read on the FB IF group. Some do 14/10, 16/8, 5:2 etc. They have many different ways they do it as it works for the individual. Some eat what they want during their eating window but watch calories, some do different versions of low carb and some do that new micro thingy. You and I do a lot of reading and we learn a lot, but I need to just stick with my basic plan. Saying that, Dr. Fung has some knew info articles on IF. I got the link from the other IF group on another website. I'll get it and put it here when I get back from church. BBL |
Yes, I think low carb is just that...you eat carbs, but in lower amounts than the SAD. Right now so many people are eating a keto diet, which is zero carbs, so they say that's low carb, but low is a relative word and low can be 20 carbs for some, but more like 50-75 for some others.
I collect cookbooks, and I have a couple from Rachel Ray who does 30 Minute Meals on TV. I buy them for $1 at Goodwill. Recently I saw one of hers on the half-price pile so I got it for 50 cents. I was looking through it yesterday and was surprised to see that it's a low-carb cookbook. It's called 30 Minute Get Real Meals. In the beginning she discusses that she feels better when she cuts back on carbs although she doesn't go really low. In the back of the book she has a section for Pasta. She said those recipes have a small amount of pasta that is spread out through 6 servings so each serving just has a small portion. So, not everyone has to or wants to cut their carbs as low as 20 gm. Just cutting back some is also good for you. By reading, I get tips to incorporate into my plan, without actually changing the plan altogether. I would be interested in reading those liks, Trish. |
Morning everyone
It's a holiday here today. Thank you for that link Carol Sue,,,i bookmarked it. I feel like I'm bouncing around a bit weight wise this week. I have to get back into my WOE. I've hit a few high calorie days. Yesterday I had an all veggie and fruit day, to get back feeling more energetic. I notice if I eat too many bread/crackers etc I feel sluggish. Once in awhile is fine, it dosnt affect my bg it affects how I feel. I'm going to look up that cookbook Carol Sue...I need more go to recipes and I like the way RR cooks. Trish I would be interested in the new articles..Thx Off to shower have a good day |
Here are the links I mentioned that I found lots of info from and think y'all would be interested in.
Dr. Fung's new article 12. I saw where you could go back to read article 1 and wanted to read up thru this article but haven't really found the others yet, but then I haven't had time. https://intensivedietarymanagement.c...-tips-part-12/ This is a Low carb 101 for beginners. I think this is where I found the list of low carb veggies which made me question the zucchini, squash issue with CALP. http://authoritynutrition.com/interm...fasting-guide/ I also found this helpful when I learned what happens when you go through what I was with such a low carb diet. Thought I would share it with y'all too. I'm not really sure it is good to mess with our Electrolytes by going so low. I think with the IF of 16/8 or even 14/10 windows and eating less carbs with lower calories would give me the same benefits without all that discomfort. I want to feel better, not worse. https://proteinpower.com/drmike/2011...ow-carb-pt-ii/ |
Those 3 links I read sure has helped me decide how to make Trish's Diet Plan so that it is healthy. I had read before reading Dr. Eades book that women can eat too much protein and it isn't good for us. I probably have it cut too low, but I think with the protein that is in dairy, nuts and some veggies that it will work out ok.
Well, I joined MFP again today and reset my goals. Made my carb limit 100 g (will try to keep them between 50 - 75), my protein limit 90g and whatever was left of my percentage they go by is fat. Set my calories at 1600. I felt pretty good this morning when I checked the last time I had weighed and measured on July 17th because I had lost 2.2 lbs and 3 and 3/4 inches according to it. Then when I went to check in and put my weight and measurements on MFP and found it had been so long since I had been there that I had actually gained 5.2 lbs and gained 2 inches. So I'll change my ticker when I'm finished here so it is the same as MFP because I'm considering today a start over and I will track calories and carbs etc on MFP. I do so much better when I use it because I become more disciplined to follow the plan and to exercise. Keeps me up doing things like housework which they also count as exercise. I call it "moving". I don't use my exercise calories but I like seeing them. And I'm better at planning ahead when tracking on MFP. One thing about using MFP and letting it take care of counting calories and eating a few more carbs... I can have my fruit and dairy and still be legal. Carol Sue I always liked watching Rachel Ray cook. I knew she had lost weight on low carb, but being conditioned to having to eat 20 to 30 g a day, I never checked into her plan. I will have to look into finding her book. You know we have a really nice Goodwill here in town but I never go there. I actually forget about it being there. I need to go. Even DH used to like to browse around there. We don't eat pasta a lot but I'm sure DGS would love some pasta dishes once in a while since he Mom cooks with it a lot. p.a. I'm glad Carol Sue could answer your question. I know that Canada reads their bs different than US, not sure how. You having a fruit and veggie day made me think of one of the things I did read about Intermittent Fasting and I'm not sure but I think it was Dr. Fung who wrote it. Any way, fasting can be just cutting out one type of food for a day like you did with eating just fruit and veggies. I do like my fruit. I had an apple today. MFP calorie count is for a 3.7 oz apple so I cut the apple and measured 3.6 oz (as close to 3.7 as I could get it) and ditched the rest. It tasted so good. I read that if a woman eats up to 3 apples a day her waist goes down. I'm not a big apple eater, so I do well to eat one. LOL Guess I better get busy around here. Starting a new class Wednesday night and have to study the lesson and answer questions at the end of the chapter. Y'all have a good day. |
I just talked to my DR today and my liver ultrasound shows that I have small deposits of fat in my liver and she has diagnosed me with Non-Alchoholic Fatty Liver Disease. Her treatment for me is to eat a more vegetarian diet and exercise more. Cut out high cholesterol foods, no red meat, no cheese, low fat dairy in moderation, and more veg. She also wants me to get below 225 by the end of the year.
|
Laifierr  Sorry about the liver test results but glad that it can be corrected with diet and weight loss. Good luck on your journey.
|
Laifierr, sorry to hear of the fatty liver diagnosis, but remember, there are a lot worse things that could have been wrong. This can be corrected. I have had my liver function checked, but never had an ultrasound.
Trish, this book from Rachel Ray is just a cookbook with recipes. There is no diet plan involved. In the introduction to the book she just explained how much better she feels when she eats lower carb. I am signed up for MFP but I don't understand how to navigate the site. I guess I just haven't spent enough time on it. I have Fitbit loaded on my computer and I sometimes use that, but not all the time. I did not take my Metformin over the weekend because I had some places to go and didn't want to have bowel problems. I took one on Sunday night and another Monday morning and the problems came back. I have a new RX that I can take back to Target, but I don't know if they can fill it because I recently had it filled at another pharmacy. You have to wait a certain time before you can get an RX filled again. I will explain the situation. I never had a problem with the Metformin they dispense at Target in the 7 years I've been taking it. I don't know what's in the ones they gave me at the other pharmacy. I checked the code online to make sure it's the correct med and it is, just has terrible side effects for me. I also don't know what's going on with my blood sugar, unless it's because I haven't been taking the Metformin like I should. For 4 days I ate 40 gm of carb or lower, but my fasting blood sugar has been over 200. I'm still taking the glimiperide. It might be due to inflammation because I've been having a lot of joint pain lately. I can't figure this out. I might as well go back to eating the bread that I love so much. |
This article was posted on Yahoo.com. I thought y'all might want to check it out. I am surprised at some of the things research is beginning to learn about how some of the foods we eat affect our bodies. This research shows that soybean oil which is used by restaurants (they thought it was healthy) and they say is in just about every processed food may be causing our weight problems and contributes to insulin resistance. They found from a test they did with mice that it may be worse than fructose. You can read it for yourself. I'm not sure but I think my mayonnaise is made with with soybean or has it in it. All this may not be our problem at all. Laifierr I thought of you when I read this because it also mentioned fatty liver. I stopped eating soybean (I love edamme) because I heard so much bad stuff about it recently. Just don't want to take the chance since some of the things they thought it prevented like breast cancer, they now believe it contributes to it. When in doubt, I just don't use it.
http://www.foxnews.com/health/2015/0...se-than-sugar/ Carol Sue Thanks, but I knew the book wasn't a diet per se, but I would like to see if there are any recipes that my DH might like. I get so tired of cooking the same old thing over and over. It gets so boring. And when I'm not really hungry for anything in particular, it is really hard to decide. I might start hitting some places here in town where I might could find it cheap. It is a $16+ paperback book at Amazon. That is just too much for a paperback book. I hope Ollie's will have it. Sorry to hear about your problems with Metformin. I never thought about they might have changed brands at Walmart. You may have just come to the place like I have that you just can't use it without the side effects. I keep trying to go back to it because it is cheaper than the Januvia, but with the side effects, it isn't worth it. I don't know what is going on either with FBS. The 1st time I took mine this morning it was 165 and then before I ate it was 135. I'm just using the Januvia. I think maybe IF isn't working for me. Maybe IE with Calorie Counting will work better. I say that because I try to eat within 8 hrs which usually ends up being more like 9 hrs mainly because last night I was supposed to not eat anything after 6:30. I got busy and forgot. I didn't realize until about 7:30 I needed to take my Januvia pill and it was past my 8 hr window. So I run in and grab a snack. Stayed within my calories, but not my carbs. Ever since I saw other diabetics getting higher readings with IF, I'm wondering about that. One good thing is that my weight inched down .6 lbs this morning so that part is good just not the fbs reading. I'm going to just try eating when hungry and count the calories on MFP. MFP also has a thing now where you can keep up with Micronutrients which I have no concept of and don't want to even know about it at this point. I just want to eat healthy and move on. We are going to Charlotte in a bit to take a friend to sell some of her jewelry so she can get her car fixed. Will be eating out. Eating out is kind of questionable after reading that article. DH said we might go to Sonny's BBQ for lunch and it is easy to stay away from fried foods there. So it may be okay. If that article is right, that may be why DH who has no diabetes history in his family. He never could understand how he could ever have that problem but he eats a lot of processed foods beside the fact that he loves to eat out especially loves hamburger and fries when he can taste them. Y'all have a good day. |
Evening everyone
I'm having the opposite problem, I had another low last night...one more and my Dr wants me to call her. I'm not sure what's causing them. I track what I eat and it's nothing different then I've eaten before. Laiferr that's a lot of weight to lose quickly,,, :/ Trish good going on the loss Carol Sue I hope u find out what's going on with your metformin.. |
p.a. You have been doing so well with your eating plan that your doctor will either lower your med dosage or even remove it.
We went out to eat for fish and I had a very carby food. Because it was a local restaurant and no nutritional info, I came home and used MFP to figure out the approximate calories and I figured them a little high to be safe. I still did good although my carbs were high and so was my sodium, my calories today were between 1600 and 1700 calories. I don't usually use my activity calories, but I'm thankful to saw they more than covered the calories I ate. So I have 2 good days OP under my belt. I have put out a question to the IF people on a low carb website to see if the higher FBS reading before breakfast and after a 16 hr fast will finally lower. If they say it is a normal thing and does lower, I will continue IF. If it isn't, I may not continue IF. Catch y'all tomorrow. |
p.a. I have heard that some people have issues with hypoglycemia even if they don't have diabetes. It's a whole other issue. I would be curious to see what your doctor does about it, if it happens again. Exercise can cause you to have a low, if you haven't eaten beforehand.
Trish, there are a lot of sellers that have that Rachel Ray cookbook for $.75 plus shipping on Half.com. I buy many books from that site and have never had a problem. I just make sure the seller has a rating of 100% or close to it. Also, do you ever exercise in the evening? Sometimes that helps with lowering FBG. |
Morning,
I'm thinking because it's been a few weeks between each episode she won't do anything,,,,she actually asked me if I was using an old meter when she saw my numbers. ( sheesh) Trish 2 days OP is good,,,keep up the streak! Carol Sue I've heard about exercise lowering bg but both times i hadn't walked yet. I may Squeek out a loss this week, scale is looking much better then the beginning of the week. |
Well, I need to remember to always check with the IF people on the other lowcarb website when I don't understand why something is happening. Thank God for those people and their years of experience. One lady who has been doing this for a while and her bs is under control still gets crazy readings sometimes. Just happens. However, the way my readings are right now seems to be part of the process. So I will continue doing the IF/LC way of eating. I am so thankful for learning that.
My first FBS was 155, but the "still" fasting reading before I ate breakfast was 117. So good to know that it is normal. One good thing about eating the way I do now is that eating out did not affect my weight. I didn't gain or lose. :carrot: Carol Sue No I usually do my exercise in the morning. I may have to change it since I'm doing IF. I'll try doing it this evening and see how it goes tomorrow. Boy these bodies are finiky (sp) aren't they? :?: |
Trish, you could still do your exercise in the AM like you're used to, but then add a short session after your last meal. That was working for me before. I would get on my treadmill for 15 minutes. I don't know why I got away from it. I guess life just got in the way.
I have been eating low carb for 6 days now. I was down a couple lbs, but today I'm up. Yesterday, I didn't feel good, weak or something, and I took a couple bites of the mashed potatoes I made for DH. I felt better after that, but that's not something I want to do on a regular basis. Also, my blood sugar was still too high so I was taking the glimiperide. It causes a surge in insulin, which we know causes weight gain, and it's working against me. Today my FBG is much better so I am going to start cutting the glimiperide in half like I was doing before. I intend to wean off of it, eventually. Low carb will allow me to do that. For 2 evenings now I have had 1 scrambled egg before bed. Remember when that helped lower my FBG? I have no idea why that happens. I will try not having it one of these evenings and see what happens without it. I don't know if it's helping, or if it's a fluke and my fasting is just going down. I went back on the Metformin, and for 2 days now I have not had any issues. It's possible that since LC causes constipation, that it's all evening out. Or, the bathroom issues were due to something else, or my body is adjusting to the new pill. I will take it today, but not over the weekend because that's when we're out and about more and I can't risk having a problem away from home. I can remember back, years ago, when I just ate and lived, and didn't have to worry about all this. Sigh p.a. I think your doctor is puzzled about why these lows are happening, and trying to see if it's not really low. It's too scary to ignore it, but you do need to find out why it's happening and how to prevent it in the future. I hope you get this straightened out soon! |
Quick flyby today. I am shocked at todays FBS. I ate late last night because of Bible Study and then ate protein around midnight because I stayed up late with DH. Of course, I wasn't hungry this morning, but my FBS was 90. Counting the caories and eating what I want seems to be working.
No time for individuals. Catch y'all later. Have a great day. |
I got a shock myself today, Trish. This morning I only took 1/2 glimideride and my met. I had scrambled eggs for breakfast. Then we were out around lunch time and we picked up a Subway italian sub. We brought it home and split it, but I didn't eat the bread. I mixed the filling in a bowl of lettuce and ate it like a salad. It was so good! For dinner I cooked chicken on the grill. DH wanted corn and rice pilaf, neither of which I should be eating. I ate a bite or two of each, plus I had a sweet potato that was starting to sprout so I cooked that on the grill along with the chicken. I was concerned about eating that big sweet potato, but I didn't want it to go bad. At dinner I took the other half of the glimiperide and my second met. Now it's 10PM and I just checked my BG and it's 96. I haven't had a reading below 130 in a few years!! Here is my problem. I am now concerned that I'm going to go too low while I'm sleeping and not realize it. I really don't know what to do. I only had a low one other time and that was 44...really LOW, and it scared me half to death. I think I am going to have my nighttime scrambled egg and hope that that holds me over.

Morning
Trish and Carol Sue, have you guys heard of the 'dawn phenomenon' . Your liver starts to dump sugar early in the morning to get you ready for the day. ( that's a really simple explanation,,I know it's more complicated then that.) well to prevent highs in the morning diabetics will eat protein such as nuts, eggs etc at night before bed. It actually gives your liver something to do at night to prevent the high sugars. Sounds like that's what's happening to you guys. Not sure if you belong to Diabetes Daily? It's another board that has so much info on it. It's been a great resource for me. There's people who having been controlling diabetes for 30 yrs on it. I squeaked out a small loss this week,,,so close to losing 30 pounds since I was diagnosed. I have my dds dog this weekend, nice company plus I will get in extra walks. Off to grab a coffee.... |
Yes, I have heard of the dawn phenomenon. It's difficult to guage what and how much your snack should be at bedtime. I have tried different things and so far, one scrambled egg is working well. 2 scrambled eggs is too much and doesn't work as well. And sometimes I get the high FBS anyway. In the hospital all diabetics got either a graham cracker with PB, or a saltine with cheese. I know someone who gets a lower FBG if she eats a piece of graham cracker.
This morning my FBG was 121. Much lower than I've had for a very long time! I am pleased that it's improving, and I don't need any glimiperide today. I'm may be a little higher over the weekend because even though I have not had any issues with the metformin the past few days, I'm not taking it again until Sunday evening. We do too much running around on weekends to be having bathroom issues. I belong to another diabetes board, not Diabetes Daily. I mostly read but not post. I get a lot of information there, but there are also a lot of Type 1s there and they have problems that I can't relate to. Good for you on the loss, p.a. Every little bit helps. 30 lbs is great! |
p.a. Congratulations on your weight loss. A loss is a loss. See you did do okay on your holiday.
Yes. The lady who told me that she continued having high FBS for a while as she began IF/HFLC mentioned that. She said it takes a while for the liver to stop dumping glucose during the night thus the 'dawn phenomenon'. So that really makes since. I also remember the lady on there who has been doing lowcarb for years who went to Duke's to Dr. Markowsk's (may have spelled that wrong) classes. She says she keeps her carb grams around 35g, but she eats a lot of high fiber veggies with her protein. I thought of you you Carol Sue because you like a lot of veggies just as I do. I think I'm going to start thinking in terms of more fiber and will slowly increase my fiber with my IF. Got to run. Beautician is taking off tomorrow to go to her son's graduation from college. So I'm going today. I'll try to get back later if I can. Y'all have a good one. |
Trish, I do agree that fiber is important, but with this recent stint of low carb I have not been having nearly as many veggies. Some days, no veggies at all. I haven't quit them, just backed off for a while to see what will happen. don't know if that's the reason for my lower blood sugar or not. That 96 after eating a huge sweet potato really floored me, but it was eatien with lots of roasted chicken, so protein with carbs, and the sweet potato had fiber. I don't think I would get the same response with a white potato or other white carbs.
Just out of curiosity I'm going to track my food from yesterday and see just how many carb grams I had. |
Carol Sue The lowcarber that I read about who eats lots of lowcarb doesn't eat potatoes of any kind, but occasionally eats legumes. So I am beginning to think that with what we've learned about how things work with diabetes, some "healthy" lowcarb/GL along with protein might be a good way to eat to control BS. Even some multigrain foods might be okay. I think this is why we see people who eat a little more carbs than the usual 20 or 30g, still control their FBS/BS and lose weight.
Well, my FBS was 94. After reading what p.a, shared about eating at night before going to bed, I'm thinking that is why I've had 2 days of low FBS and I haven't had to take a bp meds for a week now. Weight hasn't moved, but "first things first". I believe that will come. I am very happy with how things are going for me. p.a. Thanks for the website. I'll check that one out. Have a great week end. |
Trish, I don't usually eat potatoes of any kind on LC either, but I just didn't want to waste that sweet potato that I had. I'm really glad I don't have any more because eating the whole thing at one meal was NOT my intent. It was just a trigger. I haven't had many legumes lately, either.
I am going to try to up my water intake and see if that will help with the scale. I hate to drink too much, especially when we're out and about. Today I'm going to a picnic for a while and I'm not sure what the bathroom facilities are like there. Probably just outhouses....I hate them! |
Morning everyone
With you guys talking about potatoes and such makes me wonder...I do eat potatoes ( not every day but when I do it's about 4 or 5 baby ones) now I'm still testing 6 times a day and I've noticed they do not affect my bg...I can also have corn and carrots. All HG foods. BUT my thought is should I? My readings after are well in the 'good range' but Im on 2 meds and I know they are controlling my bg. Just thinking out loud Lol Going to try a new recipe today. I love pizza and I found a recipe for a zucchini crust...I tried the cauliflower one blech! If this one is a fail I ordered a low carb pkg of tortillas and will keep them in the freezer for something different. I will let you know if it's a keeper. How many carbs do you guys eat in a day...I say I eat lower carb, I track mine of MFP and usually come in around 75-100. But, I realize low carb is more around 20-30. Grabbing another coffee,,,,,bbl |
p.a. I don't think the potato will hurt from time to time as long as it doesn't raise your bg. I'm not really a good judge on that though. Obviously what you are doing works. BTW I couldn't find a website called Diabetes Daily. Do have the link to the site you mentioned?
Carol Sue I understand. Plus we often get in situations where we either have to eat the carbs or go without. You did good. Good luck with your picnic. One of the things I'm doing is drinking more water. I think the hot weather makes it easy to do so. I'm not using the stevia in my coffee any more just the Mini-moos half and half which means I only drink 2 or 3 cups a day. Usually only 1 1/2. I have decided to start drinking green tea again as well. I read some on macronutrients. I'm not sure about the one I was reading, but I did get a better idea of how to figure my carbs, fats, and protein counts. I trust Dr. Eades with what he says about how much protein we need than the site I read only because they recommended more starches than I'm comfortable with. I decided to change my counts on MFP. They round everything off at 5% and 10% so I set my %s at carbs 15% = 60g, fat 60% = 107 g, and protein 25% = 100g. My goal is to keep those grams lower than MFP shows, but will use these numbers as my limits. This will mean eating less if not 0 starches most of the time. Most of my carbs will be from low carb veggies. I hope this works because I just am not cut out for the 20 - 30g Atkins & Bernstein low carb. Supposedly this along with the IF will bring the FBG down to normal as well as help me lose weight. It is definitely worth the doing and see what happens. Have a nice week end. |

You will have to copy and paste I'm not sure how to link it to bring you right there. It's an information board but there are forums as well Never mind the link worked automatically I tested it. |
Thanks for the link p.a. I will check it out, too. I think with potatoes, a lot depends on how much you eat and what you are eating with it. A large meal, even low carb, will raise blood sugar, so a smaller meal that contains potatoes shouldn't hurt. It's actually what most diabetes educators recommend. Most diabetics try to avoid it because carbs increase their appetite and they cannot stick with the small portions. If you are having good blood sugar readings, it should be ok to stick with it.
Trish, I thought I did good at the picnic. There were so many sweets there but I didn't eat any of them. My blood sugar was high at bedtime, and I think the only thing that could have done that was the breading on the chicken. I think I am extremely sensitive to carbs, more so than most. The picnic was nice, but had some sad undertones. My nephew who hosted it was recently diagnosed with stage 4 liver cancer. Although he didn't say so, I think he did this to gather those he loves together for a fun occasions before he becomes too sick for it. He is showing no visible signs yet, but the treatment is starting to tire him out easily. We are praying for a miracle. |
p.a. Thanks again for the link. I bookmarked it to read later. I saw a post by a 65 yr old person. I want to spend some time reading there as I believe I can learn a lot.
Carol Sue I am glad you did well at the picnic, but so sorry about your nephew. I will be praying for him. I think I'm very sensitive to carbs as well. I had added some carbs to my way of eating recently and I am paying for it as I have the rash that I always get when I go too far with it. So far I haven't learned just how much my body tolerates. However, I do believe it is the type of carbs not necessarily the amount that is the problem. I really think the ration that I've clocked as my goals on MFP must be right, because the weight I gained from eating the Chinese food is gone today plus almost 2 more lbs. Not ready to accept it until tomorrow. Tomorrow is my WI day so I'll change my ticker then. Besides, I weighed later today since I slept late because I didn't go to church due to the rash being uncomfortable. My FBS was 132 this morning just before I ate at 11:30 am. Strange thing is that with my eating 3 meals and the night time snack seemed to only make me really hungry this morning. I'm not really sure if that is part of the process. My bp was 124/60 today. Still don't have to take the bp medicine. I am keeping a close watch on my bp. This is as close to normal as I've seen in a long time. It has been in this range for 2 days now. I'm still have bp medicine on hand in case I need it, but I never want the problems that my Daddy has with his bp going so low. His bp goes so low that sometimes it doesn't even register on his bp meter and he has to drink broth to bring it up to normal. His sister's bp went so low that she never got well from it before she died. She was on bp meds for low bp. When I told my doc about this he said the medicine they have to use for low bp is dangerous. I just have to keep an eye on it. |
Trish, when you speak of the rash you get from eating carbs it makes me think of my psoriasis. Carbs don't seem to have anything to do with it but you never know. I am trying to get off coffee again, as I do believe that the tannin in coffee effects it. I am down to 2 cups in the morning where I was up to 4 or more. For a long time I would only drink what I called a mouthful of coffee in the morning....about an inch in my cup. I want to get back to that.
My weight is still not going down in spite of cutting back on carbs for 8 days straight. My blood sugar has improved, and therefore I don't have to take as much glimiperide, so that should reduce my insulin levels and weight loss should come eventually as a result. My blood pressure has come down a bit but it's still too high. I think weight has a lot to do with that, too. Most of my medical problems all come back to my weight. I just can't seem to find my way to get rid of it without starving myself. |
Afternoon everyone
Carol Sue I have heard diabetes, high carbs and psoriasis are linked together. I know I have had it in the past on my legs I scratched till I bled,,,what a mess. Since I've been diagnosed and gone low carb...nothing! First summer without it in awhile. I'm sorry your having a hard time losing weight. Would you like to start journaling here? I know with other boards people will have a daily journal to see what you eat...also gives you ideas when your in a slump. Trish that's scary. Can I ask you guys something? How come you don't take your meds regularly? ( in no way am I being mean or sarcastic) I'm curious? Is this often done with diabetics or with HBP? I'm new to my meds and assumed they were to be taken this way. On the pills side effects pages it says not to stop without drs consent. |
p.a. I've read that LCHF/IF lower bp. I never had "high" blood pressure to start with so never was sure why the doc had me on it. I've always taken it once a day about the same time until I started having lows. This mornings bp was 103/52. I think that is too low to be taking bp meds. I will discuss it with my doc when I see him. DH goes in a couple of weeks and I will take a record of my bp readings and talk to him about it then. While I do still eat salt, I really don't eat that much. I'm not even taking the fluid pill I asked him to give me years ago. As long as I do the lowcarbing, I don't need it either. I learned a yr ago when a niece started taking it calling it a bp bill instead of a fluid pill, I'm not comfortable taking it either.
I do take my other meds fenofibrate which doc says is supposed to keep me from having heart attacks and strokes and Januvia for bs. I tried taking the Januvia earlier in the day, but I do better by taking it in the evening with a snack. I take them faithfully trusting what my doc has told me. Carol Sue I got the feeling from watching Dr. Fung that getting the glucose under control comes first and then the weight loss when doing LCHF/IF. So I've decided to just accept the fact that I'm slowly lowering my FBS and that eventually the weight loss will come. I may end up giving up my coffee too or maybe only drink 1 cup. I drink a lot of water, 1 c milk and I am drinking green tea again as well. I can do tea easier without sweetner although the coffee is getting easier to drink without it, but even the half and half seems to cause palpitations and I don't really care for the decaf. I wasn't as good at keeping my MFP tracking last week. I plan to do better this week. Just having to get use to making it a habit. I try to be very active throughout the day so when I go to the store or ride the bike is extra. I actually lost 1 lb this week which is better than a gain. My measurements stayed the same and my FBS was down to 127 this morning. I am still doing the low carb breakfast although I didn't want veggies this morning. Just made 1 egg, a sl of Canadian bacon and a pinch of shredded cheddar cheese and 2 c coffee with 2 Mini-moos. I'll have salad, pork loin center cut chop, green peas and cabbage for lunch with a c of milk. Dinner will be a chicken thigh and stir-fry veggies. I'll have 2 snacks 1 with nuts and 1 slice of cheese and then have 1 scrambled egg sometime before bed with my Januvia. I will have a 9 hr eating window today. All this is less than 1600 calories and the carbs minus fiber will be within the 60 g. Have a good day. |
I can see why your concerned with LBP...
|
I saw a Januvia add today. Januvia works with diet and exercise. So although I am being more active lately, I'm going to really get serious at doing the exercise. FBS was 131. BP is still low 111/59. I'm not really worried about the bp, because according to all of the HFLC/IF info, many people with high bp are able to come off the bp meds. So I do believe that the fact that mine is low this quick is great since it never was high before. My weight is still bouncing up and down but as I said yesterday that seems to be normal and is to be expected on HFLC/IF even for diabetics.
Don't think I'm going to continue the snack before bedtime. I just don't like eating that late and it makes me eat when I'm not hungry. I will stick to the 8 or 9 eating window. I've read somewhere that the 9 hr window works better for women. I'm keeping the calories in the area of 1600, but I am beginning to work out the protein, fat and carb grams so that I am actually doing HFLC/IF now. I also read that if I can get the protein, fat and carb grams right then this will also work better maybe a little faster. Although I'm not counting on faster. Hope everyone is doing fine. Have a good day. |
p.a. my doctor prescribed the glimiperide as one tablet twice a day. It forces the pancreas to release extra insulin to bring blood sugar down. If my blood sugar is below 150 and I take it without eating carbs, my blood sugar will go down too low, like it did that time I woke up during the night and had a glucose reading of 44. This is why I don't take it. I know that it is recommended that you take your meds as directed by your physician and not to change your dose or stop taking it without consulting him/her. But if I take my glimiperide when my blood sugar is not high, I will probably be seeing the doctor in the ER. It would be great if I could just take my meds and everything would work as it should, but it doesn't. If the doctor took me off the meds or reduced the dose, that wouldn't work either, because sometimes I need the full dose. I don't know until I test before meals if I need it or not. With the Metformin, I wasn't taking it on weekends because I was having diarrhea which I blamed on the Metformin. I didn't want to risk having an accident when I was out somewhere. Now I am no longer getting the diarrhea and I'm able to take the Metformin as prescribed. Medformin does not lower my blood sugar and put me at a life threatening risk.
I think it is the same with Trish and her BP meds. Her blood pressure has gone down and if she continued to take the BP meds, she would end up in the ER. I don't mind your asking or think you are being mean or sarcastic. I know that there are probably more people who think it is a mistake to handle my meds the way I do, but I don't know what else to do. I am trying to keep myslf from getting dangerous highs or lows the best I can. I do journal my food sporatically to see where I stand. Glimiperide is known to cause weight gain, so right now I think the glimiperide is keeping my insulin levels up and keeping me from losing. If I can get my blood sugar in line with diet and exercise and not need the glimiperide I think I will start losing. |
