I'm glad you weren't offended,,,I'm just trying to learn more.
I'm putting in a call to my Dr tomorrow, I had 3 lows this week,,, :/ |
I just read info on Januvia and how it works on their website and also read the information I got from the pharmacist. I don't think I can do strict low carb while on this medicine. In fact, it is recommended that you eat a balanced diet with exercise. There is a warning to call your doctor if you have ketones in your blood or urine or ketoacidosis. Am I correct in remembering that VLC does cause this problem? I might be safe keeping the carbs no lower than maybe 60 g a day. One good thing I learned is that I can still take the Januvia in the evening without eating because it can be taken with or without food.
I got up multi-grain toast with bacon and eggs this morning. Not sure about lunch because we are eating out. I actually could go back to my 2 meals a day and have 19/5 or 20/4 eating time since I do not have to have a snack at night. This will eliminate eating by the clock and also eating just to take a pill when I'm not hungry. I think I finally have the plan that will not only work with my medicine but it will also fit my natural way of eating. Hope everyone is doing good today. |
I am checking out Diabetes Daily. I read on there about Januvia and lowcarb. It seems that there were some on there who took Januvia and did the lowcarb way of eating. Januvia.com recommends using lowfat diet. I really think a lowfat is easier, but with all I've read and learned through the years, I am not sure that lowfat is as healthy as we were once made to believe. I will continue taking the Januvia at least till my next doc's appt. and continue lowcarbing and see how it goes. I just won't do extreme lowcarb. Also I read that the higher FBG is normal but the after meal readings are low. Januvia does not cause extreme low readings unless on glimiperide or something like that. it is supposed to work with your body by helping it produce the glucose normally. We will see how it goes.
I will keep researching... probably using Diabetes Daily for guidance. |
Trish, I think every diabetes med says to eat a balanced diet and exercise, and to contact your doctor if you have ketones/ketoacidosis. These are normal warnings. According to most diabetic educators we are to eat carbs, the same number of gms at each of 3 meals, spread throughout the day. This is how they had me eating in the hospital when I was diagnosed and I continued for a while afterwards. Many people do this and it works for them. Do what works for you. I say this because I know that you will be reasonable, and not do anything drastic. Many people experiment with their meds, seeing what works best for them, taking it with food or without food.
If I would eat like this, my blood sugar would probably be steady with taking the glimiperide. Wanting to get off the glimiperide is why I don't do it. I don't think I will lose weight as long as I'm on it. |
Hi ladies
Can't get thru to the Dr office on the phone and no voice mail...she only works half days fris so I'll wait til next wk now. This morning ,of course, I woke up with a higher bg reading then I normally have. So I fasted till noon but it wouldn't budge till I ate lunch...so maybe something about fasting and high readings?? Who knows... Last time I fasted I was low. It's been heating up again weather wise...calling for 100 degrees this weekend...omg!!! I can't handle that lol. Carole sue I'm on glaclazide,,,,it does same thing your drug does to. I want to get off it as well. I made some low carb bread yesterday ( Bob mills low carb bread mix) it wasn't bad.....had a piece for lunch with butter and cut the rest into slices and froze it. I think it would be better toasted. I'm thinking toasted tomato sandwiches this time of year. The only time tomatoes taste like tomatoes.... I never did make the recipes I was going to this week. I did order some low carb food online....I can't buy the tortilla factory low carb tortillas here except by ordering them. Froze them to. The Bob mills bread mix...some different flavoured sugar free pudding mixes ( banana and cheesecake) and some protein chips. I feel like I have more choices now for breakfast and lunches. The protein chips are eh,,,, but with a little dip would be something with crunch factor. Everything is portioned out so no temptation to pig out!!! I'm teetering on a new decade weight wise and really want to hit it soon. Have a good weekend everyone! |
p.a. fasting doesn't always bring my blood sugar down, either. Maybe your dosage of glaclazide needs to be lowered if you are having so many lows. I hope you get in touch with your doctor soon.
I don't buy any low-carb products. I bought some sprouted grain bread at Target and I have it in the freezer for when I want bread. A loaf lasts me for months as I don't eat if often. This bread is very small thin slices, as 2 slices are equal to 1 slice of regular bread. I also love tomato sandwiches but have only had 1 so far this summer. I'm trying not to eat much bread. |
I read on DiabetesDaily where a dietician suggests starting with a higher number like the low number of carbs that ADA recommends daily which is 130 grams and work backwards lowering the carbs till you find how many you can tolerate. Yesterday was a high carb day which I did list on MFP. I have to tell you that I cannot do a high carb diet. I was absolutely miserable. I don't know if it is because I'm not use to eating loads of carbs or what. Plus, I took the Lisinipril for the past 2 days and when I took it, my bp was so low that I was lethargic. All I wanted to do was sleep which I did. Probably not smart, but I couldn't stay awake. I checked my bp 88/46 heart rate was 78. Took hours for it to finally get back up to 105/55. So I'm taking it again until I see the doc. Maybe he will drop it or lower it. He and I will have to discuss this.
I also read that the new diabetic meds do not lower fbs, but it does lower your 2 hr post reading. I read some people on DiabetesDaily talking about how Januvia. This discussion was back inn 2010 and they were saying that they didn't think it helped them lose weight (which pharmaciest told me it might) as much as the low carb dieting did and that is where I learned that it doesn't seem to lower FBS, but 2 hrs after meals were lower. So we will see. My FBS has been rather high in 150s sometimes even lower 160s. Then I read on another diabetic site that the host of that site that he/she never got better bg/bp readings until he got off his meds (didn't recommend anyone doing that) and started eating low carb/low glycemic way of eating. This site talked about the varied definitions of very low carb, moderately low carb etc. I think the very low carb is between 21 to 70 gram carbs a day. I don't remember the moderately low carb range because I realized that I could do 70 g a day. I'm not giving up low carb way of eating. There are just too many great benefits from eating that way. Not real sure about the IF side of it. I am not sure if it is helping enough. The main thing is to stop eating early at night and then I usually don't eat until 9 or 10 am. I once had a book where you had fruit by itself in the morning hours and then ate regular food for 8 hours and the fasted for 8 hrs. The cycle was from 8 pm to 4 am you fasted, from 4 am to noon was time to consume fruit and then eat your regular meals from noon to 8 pm. So I figure if I fast from 8 pm to 9 or 10 am that I'll be doing good. I am exercising although not always as much as I probably should. Mostly trying to move around more. I have been riding a mile on the recumbent bike in the evening because it stops my back from hurting. So I've ridden it almost everyday this week. What does this mean for me? Since low carbing works for lowering bp and bs, I will stick to that. It just might mean that the doc will have to take me off my meds. Who knows. No since in even taking Januvia if it doesn't work and I can't afford any of the other meds, but I'm not ready to give up on that one yet. I will discuss that with him as he can up that one since I'm on the lowest mg right now. With the possible side effects, I don't want to raise it too much though. So I'm hoping if I can get my carbs to stay between 20 to 70 grams that the diet will finally lower the fbs. Hope everyone is having a good weekend. |
Going to look up sprouted grain bread.....
|
p.a. the most popular one is Ezekiel bread, sold in the frozen food department in my local store. The one I have been buying is this
http://www.goodguide.com/products/35...eviews-ratings It is not low carb, but the slices are very small so you need less to make a sandwich or toast, and it's said to be very healthy. It's chewy bread, not soft like white bread. You have to like that sort of thing. It's in a separate display in Target, near the dairy/deli aisle. It's expensive, but worth it to me. Trish, I think the reason you cannot eat higher carb is because your body is no longer used to it. It's the same way with me. I ate really high carb the past two days and felt terrible, also. When I do that I have to take my glimiperide full strength and I'd rather not. I tried cutting back on my vegetables to make my carbs lower and I am not happy with that. I was again reading about the importance of the fiber and nutrients in the vegetables so I am going to add them back. I can eat a lot of vegetables and still say below 70 gm of carb. I believe our bodies need them. Everyone might not agree with me and that is a personal choice. My joint pain has also increased without the vegetables. I would not be taking the blood pressure meds if I were you. Fluid pills lower blood pressure, too, if you're still taking them. It's good that you check your blood pressure so you know where you stand. Please take into consideration that the blood pressure monitor you're using could be malfunctioning. Sometimes I check mine when I go to the local Walmart, but theirs is always much lower than the one I have at home, and at the doctor. One time our doctor had us bring our home monitor with us so he could compare that reading to the one they did manually. Back then, it was the same, but they can wear out and malfunction. I ordered a copy of the original Dr Atkins Diet Revulution 72. These women keep saying how the original diet was so different from the new version. Many of them go on induction and stay there for extended periods of time. I am interested in reading about OWL, as I believe it allows more vegetables than they are eating. They only eat a little bit of iceberg lettuce and cucumbers. I am doing this just to satisfy my own curiosity. I will not confront them about their lack of vegetables. Everyone has the right to do what they want. |
I checked my fbs earlier this morning and it was 157 which isn't unusual for being on Januvia. I decided to eat a little differently today. So I had an apple with a slice of cheddar cheese before going to church. I remember a lady who use to be on here who ate an apple with peanut butter in the mornings. By the time I got to church and set down, I suddenly felt alert. Something I haven't felt in quite some time. The carb was higher than I would have liked but I will watch that next time. I think I need the fruit. I got home and checked my bg before eating lunch and my reading was 127. So I'm going to do some things a little differently this week. I am going to try eating small snack type meals for a few days and see how that works. Perhaps I am one of those people who does better with a little more carbs, but spreading them throughout the day into small snacks.

Trish, do you ever do a control test on your meter? I did one this morning. I opened a new pkg of strips and my FBS was 201. I haven't had one in the 200s for over a month, so I did a control test and tested again and it was 163. Not great, but a big improvement over the 201.
I like apples, and like them with PB, but for some reason I buy them and then don't eat them. I like Gala apples. I am reading a book from the library that was recommended to me. It is Rethinking Thin. I just started it this morning. So far, it tells how all the diets that are popular actually started years ago in the 1800s, but keep being brought back, some the same, and some with a new twist. And all of them include regaining at some point in time. Keeping it off seems to be the main problem, but I can't even get it off in the first place! |
Morning
I tried the low carb bread last night...I used it as a bun...it was ok but not great. It maybe be better toasted. I'm kind of nervous to toast it though in case i realllly like it. Haha. I have seen the Ezekiel bread at the store! It was in the freezers. Ok I will buy a loaf next time. Chewy bread is good! I think with my other two pkgs of the low carb bread I will make some individual pizza crusts and freeze them. Something to have on hand for those days when I need something quick. Carol Sue how do you do a control test on your meter? Never heard of that. Gala apples are my favourite go to apple. This summer I had diva apples they are from New Zealand....so sweet and crisp yummmm Apple season is coming up! My teeth are sensitive so I can't do the tart apples like Macintosh. Make my teeth ache just thinking of it. Trish I've read that having some protein with carbs helps control the bg. Weight was down this morning I'm in a new decade.. That was my goal for August!! |
Carol Sue I don't know what a control test is for the meter or how to do it. Please explain. Interesting info in your new book. After all, how many different ways can a person eat.
p.a. I'm going to try to limit my intake of bread. I am changing some of the foods I'm eating but staying within the 8 hr IF window and also staying within the calories and macronutrient counts I've decided on. I know it takes time to adjust to something new. So I plan to give this a little more time to do it. This morning I had fruit with nonfat Greek yogurt. I've decided to "learn" to like Greek yogurt because it is supposed to be better for me. I also got some lowfat cottage cheese to have on a salad for dinner instead of eating so much mayonnaise and other fats. I joined SparkPeople to see how many calories they recommend. They show that I should be able to lose 1 lb a week eating 1450 to 1800 calories a day. They don't seem to do macronutrients. So I will continue the 1600 calories on MFP. I have come to believe that I just have to patiently give it time. Years ago I heard of a woman who did WW for 1 whole year before she lost even one lb. But once the year was up OP she started losing weight. I like using MFP because it figures the carbs, fats and proteins for me as well as the fiber (macronutrients). Then I subtract the fiber from the carb count to see how many carbs I'm doing that day. I really believe having the carbs between 70 to 80 grams after the subtraction of fiber should also helpl keep me from slipping up and overeating. I remember a doctor's book that I read who said to have the carb grams lower than the fat grams and protein grams and then keep the fat grams above the protein gram count. I've finally got that adjusted on MFP so I will also stay with this way of eating believing I will eventually see good results. My FBS is coming down, but it is slow, but I want to know that the Januvia along with my diet and exercise plan will work for me. BP without the medicine is staying under 120/80. In fact this morning was 112/64 and was in that range the day before. Evidently lowcarbing along with IF does lower BP. I am very happy with the results. I finally have Trish's Plan that I believe I can live with. Y'all have a good day. |
Most blood glucose meters have a feature of doing a control test. I have the Walmart Relion meter. I got a bottle of control solution free from the manufacturer by ordering it online. If you are using a different meter, I've heard people say if you call the manufacturer they will send it to you. Their customer service number should be in the instruction manual.
On the Relion meter, I insert a strip. When it starts blinking, indicating that it's ready, you push the button on the right and an indicator will light up in the upper right corner showing a little bottle. (the coltrol solution) You put a drop of solution on the strip and it will come up with a number, that should be within a certain range, as shown on the canister of strips. Mine was 93. This is to be done occasionally, especially each time you open a new package of strips. It "resets" the meter. If the number you get is not within the range indicated on the package of strips, something is wrong, usually the control solution or the strips are out of date. Or something is wrong with the meter. With any problem I've had, a control test always fixes it. If you have not been doing control tests then your reading could be off. I used to use One Touch. I had 2 meters. I started getting way different readings between the two meters. I did control tests and that didn't help. Then I opened a new pkg of strips and the the 2 meters gave the same reading within 1 or 2 points. Even though the strips had not expired yet, they had been opened too long. Back then I didn't test very often. Now that I test more often the strips don't have a chance to get old. |
Morning
Trish I know I can't lose weight with that many calories...MFP wants me to eat 1600 a day as well but it dosnt work for me. Now I eat around 1200 and I dont 'eat' my exercise calories either. My Fitbit is linked to MFP and most days I show I've burned more calories then I've eaten. Since following this plan I have been steadily losing 1-2 pounds a week. I'm not starving and I feel so much better. You will find what works for you..it took me years. I still struggle sometimes to. Carol Sue I have the contour next meter,,,I didn't keep the booklet for it so I will google about testing it. Good to know thanks!! Going to an English restaurant for lunch today, I will try a real scone with tea but I'll pass on the jam and cream with it. That will be my lunch.. Have a good day everyone! |
Carol Sue Thanks for sharing the info. I checked mine last night and I think it is ok.
I am not going to worry about carbs any more. I'm just going to count calories and keep them under 1400 calories. Then if I have to go lower, I will. I have changed my mind about some lowfat products. I thought about doing WW again. I even made food plan for today with WW and then checked the calories on MFP and I think it is easier to use MFP. Plus I can print out my daily plan. I tried using Sparkpeople, but they don't have calories for all the foods I eat like MFP does. So I will continue using it. p.a. I don't use my exercise calories either unless we eat out. I've decided that I want to eat what I enjoy eating and stay within a limited number of calories. I'm not really losing at this point... I'm just maintaining within a few pounds. If I have to cut my calories back even more to lose, I will do it, but I will do it eating foods I enjoy eating. Have a good day. |
Leaving tomorrow for a weekend away......... Food will not be an issue. I won't let it. ( keep repeating that to myself as needed)
|
Started WWPP at home on my own. No meetings. I have got to get control of portions. I like having the fruits and veggies. I like the idea of being able to make homemade soups this fall. I'm even doing lowfat. I'll let you know how it goes. Just can't keep gaining weight.
Hope everyone is doing ok. |
I have decided that I am no longer trying to lose weight. I have been on 3FC since 2011 and my weight has not changed much since then, just up and down the same 5 pounds. I have become healthier, though. I have changed my diet and my labs are good. My doctor is pleased with them, and just tells me to exercise. I don't think stressing about what it says on the scale is good for me. I know I weigh more than I should, but my body seems to like this weight so I am going to accept it, too. This does not mean I am going to go back to my old WOE. Watching my carbs has lowered my blood sugar and I will continue my healthy eating that I have come to love. It just comes natural to me, now...no feeling of deprivation. I will still weigh, and will not allow my weight to balloon out of control. But if I stay at 200 lbs the rest of my life, so be it.
I have made some good friends on 3FC and I will still be posting, cheering others on. I'm just changing my focus for myself. |
Carol Sue I think we stress too much and I've been reading how stress is soooo bad for diabetics. I have pretty much the same attitude about this as you do although I'm not ready to stay where I am weight wise. However, I decided that I need to work with my body.
I will be 72 yrs young tomorrow and I realized yesterday when talking to my sister that I've been on some diet or another for 50 yrs. I'm tired of it. WW is a good diet. A few years ago I was sitting in the waiting room of the hospital waiting for DH having some test done. The tv was on in the waiting room and they announced the best diet for losing weight. They said that WW was #1 and next was Atkins. The problem was keeping it off. Then a while back I read the same thing on a newsletter I got from diet site. So I have to come to the realization that it is obvious that I am not good doing Atkins or low carb. It just does not fit me or my lifestyle. WW used to advertise something like "Eat normal food and lose weight". I always had problems with WW before because my deceased Hubby and family ate a lot of fatty foods. DH I have now doesn't really like a lot of fat foods. So I'm going back to eating the way I did when we first married and I lost so much weight only this time I'm doing it with WWPP. If done correctly it is an extremely healthy way to eat and DH will do it with me. In fact, I bought some lowfat 2% cottage cheese. Last night DH came in and said, "You know what I want to eat tomorrow? I want some of that cottage cheese with tomatoes. I learned to eat it that way from my Mother". I learned a lot myself from DH Mother when DH and I married. I learned that a sandwich doesn't have to have mayonnaise. I can eat it with mustard or without anything. I also learned that I could be just as satisfied with half a peanut butter sandwich as I would be with a whole one. It means I can eat a smaller portion of something I really want and lose weight and still be satisfied. What fats I am eating are healthy ones. I am also eating a lot like I do when we travel. I usually have a Egg McMuffin for breakfast when traveling between 9:30 and 11 am. So I make one with lowfat foods at home for as little as 4 or 5 pts. depending on the meat (bacon, Canadian Bacon or lowfat sausage) and lowfat cheese. It has become my favorite breakfast. I don't use a lot of fat free foods unless that is all I can get. It is working so. I am also exercising 5 days a week for 20 to 30 minutes. I think the greatest benefit this will have for me is that I will stop the stress. When I get rid of the stress I get of feeling guilty when I haven't done something I cannot do (low carb), the blood sugar will come down and stabilize. Then perhaps even the weight will come down as well. I'm telling you, I see people at church who have lost weight with WW and they are looking great and they have energy. I'm so ready to feel good again. Carol Sue I think you live under such stress too and I think your way of doing things will help you a lot too as the stress is removed. p.a. I don't know if you are checking in while traveling, but hope you are having a wonderful time. |
Quick flyby. Weight stopped going up and fbs down.
|
:bday2you:Happy Birthday Trish! Hope you enjoy your day! It's really an accomplishment to make it to 72 and still have your health!
Trish, exercise relieves stress, too. Strenuous exercise stresses the body while you're doing it, but relieves stress in-between. You know how you always feel much better after exercising, and for hours afterwards. The only McDonald's foods I like is breakfast. Lately a couple sit-down restaurants in our area have been making breakfast sandwiches similar to the Egg McMufflin, and sometimes I will order that for dinner. I think the best part of WW is that no food is off limits as long as you include it in your points. So many people cannot succeed unless they can eat their favorite foods now and then. The health of the plan is up to you. Having the fruits and veggies that are zero points makes people eat more of them and that's always good. I just never liked having to figure out the points for everything. It's good if you are prone to eat the same foods all the time and you can remember the points values. Like your doctor said, Trish, any diet will work as long as you stick to it and you have to do what fits your lifestyle in order for it to work long term. I don't think you can go wrong with WW. |
Thanks Carol Sue for the birthday wishes.
I am doing so well with the WWPP and doing the lowfat. And it makes me feel so very good for a change. I sleep good and I wake up ready to get up. I'm back to sleeping 7 hrs and I'm finding that my FBS is lower when I get up earlier. I sure did like seeing that 114 FBS this morning. I've never had a problem eating lowfat because I am allowed so many foods I like plus I find it extremely easy to take a regular recipe and making it into a lowfat recipe. I also find it easier to exercise and get my glucose under control. It just takes getting use to it again. I've tried and tried to do low carb way of eating because I like the benefits better, but I've had to face the fact that it just doesn't come together for me long term. I am having no problem following this way of eating. I think that the difference is that while I am able to eat foods I really like, I also am finding it so much easier to be more disciplined with it. Have a nice weekend. |
Trish, I'm glad your WOE is working for you and you are getting good sleep. I have not been getting good sleep. My hand/elbow/arm seem to hurt so much worse when I'm lying down and it's hard to find a comfortable position for sleep. The night before last took Tylenol and Benedryl, the ingredients in Tylenol PM. I slept until 9 AM, but still didn't feel refreshed. I always feel groggy when I take something for sleep so it doesn't help in the long run. I haven't been spending as much time online, thinking that typing might be making things worse. I don't know. I want to look into physical therapy before I take any other steps. It helped in the past with my shoulder. I hate taking pain meds. But I will see.
Hope all is well. |
I was beginning to think this thread had died since I was the only one posting. I do know p.a. was taking a trip. Not sure when she'll be back
Carol Sue Sorry about your elbow and arm. Could be too much typing or even the way you lay when sleeping. Sometimes one of my arms will do that. Comes and goes but never lingers. Not sure what causes it. Hope it improves for you soon. You may need to give it a rest and perhaps use cold/hot pads on it. I've been reading a lot on diabetic sites. I've also read a lot on low carb eating. I did read on Dietdoctor.com that a lot of the problems I had doing extremely low carb isn't unusual. Some people have to add more carbs. However, he did say the more carbs you have to add, the slower the weight loss, but he said doing IF along with the added carbs will help. So I'm beginning to work at doing that. I'm reading The Magic Foods for Better Blood Sugar again. I've been easing into it this week because I'm out of a lot of the foods I need. DH has docs appointment today so we will go shopping and I will get fruits, veggies and protein foods as well as nuts for the good fats. I also want to get some lentils, barley and quinoa for my grains. I want to make some soup to keep on hand to eat instead of a salad sometimes. As much as I like salads, I do get tired of them and don't want to get burned out with them. I think the book is an excellent guide to how to eat the correct carbs and which ones work best for lowering BS and eat less of the other (it doesn't say don't eat the other carbs). In fact, it shares little tricks/foods to eat with the simple carbs when you want/have to and keep the BS impact from being to high. I've always heard fiber, fiber, fiber and this book tells me how and what to use. I won't have to count pts, calories or carbs just learn to eat more of a Glycemic Load foods most of the time so I can learn how to make this a lifestyle NOT just another diet where I eat this way until I lose weight and get the BS back to normal. As I do this, I also want to learn how to do it along with IE/IF. I guess the Januvia is working like it is supposed to work according to what I've read. FBS doesn't come down a like I want, but other readings throughout the day are fine. I heard of one doctor who said that the FBS doesn't matter because that is what wakes us up in the morning. He said the readings later in the day after meals is what is more important. I just hope the Januvia will finally bring the FBS back to normal eventually. The pharmacist told me that Januvia might help me lose weight because people forget to eat when taking it. I have decided that it has more to do with what they are eating and I believe the fiber foods, protein and good fats are probably the foods they are eating. I believe when your body gets the correct nutrition that it doesn't need a lot of food, vitamins etc because you'll be getting it in your food. JMHO Busy day. Be back when I can. |
Happy belated birthday Trish!
Back from my trip... This week has been eye appts to get ready to have cataract surgery. My eyes are feeling better today,,the freezing and drops always make me sensitive to light so I get a headache all day.. I'll be back tom when I feel better |
p.a. Welcome back. Hope you had an enjoyable trip. Thanks for the birthday wishes. When do you have surgery? My son and a friend and my Daddy had cataract surgery and see much better.
DH took me out for my BD dinner yesterday at Outback and we won't go back there to eat. The last time we were there we got the best steak. This time they were terrible. Mine was hard to cut because it was a little burned on top and not a good piece of meat plus the veggies were tough. Salad was the only part of it that was any good. I really think it all depends on the cook, but still won't be going there again. We decided we will go back to Longhorn Steakhouse for steak dinners from now on. However, I was really proud of both of us. While I did eat some of the bread, we weren't even tempted to order the baked potato. We substituted steamed veggies. I felt bad for DH because he ordered broccoli and it was so bad he could only eat a small portion of it. We both ordered a vineagrette dressing. Bless his heart DH only heard my conversation and thought Balsamic and Vineagrette were the only dressing choices and so he got what I did and absolutely hated it. I think I will switch to using it on my salads when I'm finished with what I have because I get tired of just basic EVOO and Vinegar. His appt. went very well. Doc gave him a prescription for the new statin and we are waiting to get a call about whether we can afford it or not. DH numbers had improved. They now have us 2 months apart on our appt. I go in Sept for my 3 month and he goes back in Nov. Carol Sue I hope your arm is better today. |
p.a. Welcome back. I probably need cataract surgery, too, but have been putting off getting the eye exam. DH hates doctors and procedures and always tells me not to get things done and that I go to the doctor's too much. It's my decision. Lately I have been getting some pain in my bad eye. I already have a hole in the macula. What else can go wrong?
Trish, the book that I read, Fat Chance, said that the keys to weight loss are fiber and exercise. Exercise does not burn great amounts of calories, but it makes changes to your hormones that promote fat loss. It said never to skip more than 1 day of exercise in a row, even if you do only 15 min, do some. My step-daughter got us a gift card for Outback. She got us that one other time and we weren't crazy about it. We prefer Texas Roadhouse. Outback is in a town we rarely go to, but we will have to do it to use the gift card. They had coupons in the paper too, so we will use them. too. I will have to look online to see what they have on the menu as I rarely eat steak. I am not big on beef. Last night I slept for a couple hours without pain, but after I got up to go to the bathroom and went back to bed the pain started, even though I took Tylenol Arthritis. I think I will start taking IBprofen at night, even though the cardiologist tells me not to take it. He's not the one with the pain. I'm starting to get very cranky in my old age. That's my prerogative, isn't it? LOL |
Trish, I read that fasting blood sugar is the last to come down, so if your blood sugars throughout the day are good, you shouldn't worry about fasting. My doctor doesn't worry about fasting as long as my A1c is good. If I recall, yours has been running very good, so I would worry so much about fasting. Fasting has to do with a lot more than what you ate I think.
I will have to get out my Magic Foods book and read it again. I know it emphasizes fiber but I don't remember what it said about other carbs. I think you can eat all carbs as long as you keep your portions small and eat some protein with it. |
I was reading up about psoriasis and most of my psoriasis is guttae, not plaque. It said that it can be triggered by an infection, like strep throat and helped with antibiotics. This explains to me why it cleared up after I had my bowel surgery because they had me on so many antibiotics, even after I came home. About 6 months after I stopped the antibiotics it started to come back. This is encouraging me to go to a derm about it, because maybe they would not require the strong meds that are used for plaque psoriasis. I feel that weight loss would help too, but that seems to be the impossible dream for me.

Sorry never got here yesterday..
Trish do you go for 3 month drs appt regularly? My Dr wanted to see me in 3 months as well, so I'm wondering if this will be an ongoing thing. Carol I've been told it's a simple procedure. My opthamologist told me that diabetics are prone to cataracts... :/. He found another one starting in my right eye as well. When they did the eye exam I couldn't read the eye chart no matter how large she made it,,,finally she held up 3 fingers got right in my face and said how many lol....I could see that. My left eye is pretty much blind. But, he told me it will be fine afterwards. He gave me a pamphlet on cataracts and its explained a few things that are happening. Hard to see in the dark,,,,perception is off,,,that sort of thing. I will get the date next appt. Bg ran a little high yesterday,,,and didn't come down till late last nite. Like a dummy I ate some Melba toast and was still hungry so ate some more...bad me. Carol I used an OTC cream for my psoriasis....it helped with the itching. Your right it's your body,,,,I know all the time dh was sick the drs told him to get off the ibuprofen but he insisted it helped. Down a smidge today weight wise... |
p.a. I hate to be such a wimp with procedures, but with me, it seems that everything I have done, I end up with rare complications that only happen to 1 in 1000,000. Many people I know and relatives have had the procedure done for cararacts with only excellent results.
Occasionally I use a hydrocortisone cream on my legs if the itching if it gets too bad, but my psoriasis is all over my body from the shoulders down to my feet. If I put it on all the psoriasis I would use a whole tube. It is relieved for a while after I take my shower. I could probably take 2 showers a day, but then that dries out the skin and seems to make the itch worse. Some lotions are helpful and some don't do anything. One lotion made the itch worse and I had to take a shower to wash it off! Your are supposed to get bloodwork done for your A1c every 3 months. Some doctors require an office visit for this and some will just give you the results over the phone. I get mine done about every 6 months. I tend to make my own rules. I think Trish gets her bloodwork done at the doctor's office. My dr gives me a script and I go to the quick draw to get it done. Then they send the results to him. He would like me to come in for a visit, but I only do that if I have something else to discuss. I usually just call and ask for the results. I need my money more than he does. LOL I slept much better last night and didn't have as much pain. As far as I can see the only thing I did differently was drink a bottle of water in the evening. I don't usually drink in the evening because I don't want to be up all night going to the bathroom, but maybe I get dehydrated. I will try the water again tonight. |
Carol I understand,,,,it's not going to be easy for me to go there knowing he's going into my EYEBALL!,, yikes....
Went to market today loaded up on fruit and veggies. It all looks so yummy in the stalls... |
p,a. DH was very surprised that his mother had the cataract surgery done. But she said she wanted to be able to see, so she did it. Her sister had one done but then wouldn't go back for the other one. My friend's brother went in to have Lasiks surgery and something went wrong and his vision is very blurry now. They said they can't fix it now. Lasiks is not new...he was just the 1 in 100,000 that went wrong.
I drank a bottle of water in the evening again and I had no palpitations and only minor arm pain. So I am convinced it was caused by dehydration and will continue to increase my water intake. We went to the casino yesterday and I didn't get to bed until 1 AM. I only slept for a couple hours, but it wasn't due to palpitations or pain. I don't sleep well if I don't have a few hours in the evening to relax and unwind. DH is different. If he gets himself good and tired he sleeps like a rock. |
Morning
Hydration is so important for our bodies Carol..glad it's working for you. Today I'm off to the zoo with my dd and dgd,,lots of walking in. Woke up this morning with a good low number,,,I need to remember what I ate last night before bed to repeat it again. ( Greek yogurt) Our health care system is so different here in Canada...some better some not. We don't pay for most Dr appts,,,but it could take us months to get one :/ We really struggled with the system when dh was so sick,,,not the best timing either. Better run,, |
p.a.Another woman who posts here is from Canada. I have heard good and bad about the health system. Do you have mini clinics, like MedExpress? We go there if we need an appointment ASAP but it's mostly for colds and flu, etc. Major things, they send you to the ER. It takes a few days to get a non-emergency appointment with my doctor. He also has some NPs who are available for same day appointments if necessary. That's nice. When DH got shingles, we were on the way to MedExpress and stopped at the doctor's office to see if we could get in by chance. Since he knows us well, he fit us in. It only took a couple minutes to verify that it was shingles and write an RX. It costs us $15 at the doctor's but $40 at Med Express. Now they are starting to have mini-clinics in drug stores, too. Our health care is very expensive, though. Only those who are very low income get a break.
Trish, I have read so many books I get them all mixed up, but I think it was Diabetes Solution that listed proper portions for carbs. They are so small, and I think that's what gets people in trouble. People think of a serving as so much more. It was like 1/3 cup of beans, 1/2 cup of pasta, 1/4 cup of rice. That's really small! |
Hi
Yes we do have clinics herefor the same thing Carol...anything serious and we go to ER..it's the 'regular' appts that can take so long or 'Specialists' . I had my eyes opened when I started re-learning what a serving really is..who can eat 1/2 cup of rice,,pasta etc....I know it's too tempting for me so I've been avoiding them. Anyone doing anything special for the long weekend? I am going to a cottage with my dds....last minute idea and got a good deal on the rental. Just have to fight traffic to get there. |
Sorry I've been MIA. Just reading a lot. I am not sure I can do more carbs because I end up eating too much. Will be ending this month with a gain.
p.a No plans so far for the up coming weekend. You have a good visit with your dd. Carol Sue I do believe fiber and exercise is the key. The carbs and fiber probably should mostly come from veggies and maybe some legumes. I've been reading on Coconutoil.com. Found some interesting info about using Coconut oil to lower blood sugar, bp, cholesterol and lose weight. They say that we have to get the bs down before the weight starts coming off which is what I've suspected. Now to do it. Catch y'all tomorrow and hope I do a lot better in September than I did in August. |
Boy, August just flew by, didn't it? Come on over to the September Chat.
