Hello all,
doggirl, I am totally in agreement with you on the testing thing. My husband has joked with me for years about being borderline OCD, so I am really vigilant about checking my blood sugar. I, too, am looking for the patterns with certain types of food and exercise. So far, my body has been very nice to me and kept my blood sugar within normal range though I haven't always been nice to it over the years.
mel, what were your A1C levels? My doc says they should be as close to 7 as humanly possible. Under 6 is normal. 6 to 6.5 is borderline diabetic and, of course, above that means you have diabetes. Like activeadventurer, my doctor says he will draw blood every three months to monitor my A1C levels. The first time he drew it a few weeks ago, it was 8.9, so I have some work to do. I'm determined to bring it down as much as possible. also, my doctor had to seriously adjust my meds. metformin can tank your blood sugar if you are taking too much. Originally, the army hospital sent me home with instructions to take 850 mg twice a day. I ended up with BS readings of 50 and 47 doing that. My regular doctor has modified that to 500 mg, twice a day. We'll see how that works for a while. Also, I've started having cravings for "bad" things, too. At first, it was terrible because I felt boxed it. I couldn't have ANYTHING! Now I've just told myself that if I really want it, I'm going to let myself have a small portion of it. Amazingly, as soon as I stopped fighting my cravings for it, I stopped craving it altogether. So far, fruit and yougurt and animal crackers have handled my sweet tooth. I'm sure the time will come when I HAVE to have a small brownie or a scoop of ice cream, and when it does, I'm going to have one.
timetoshrink...thanks for the heads up about the splenda ice cream. I've never seen it before but I'll be looking out for it now.
