Default Thursday Chat - September 1st

Good Morning!!!

It's 3:30 in the morning here and where is everybody? Surely I thought I'd find Marble here since we share the inability to sleep problem.

Have a terrific Thursday and prayer for the people in Katrina's wake.

Good Morning

How's everyone today? Marieeeeeeeeeeee what in the world are you doing up at that hour? Usually when I'm up at that time I'm eating hope your not doing that.

Nothing new here, SOSDD.

No memorial or any services for my BIL, he wanted to be cremated and his ashes scattered over the grand canyon. MIL is having a rough time as well as the kids. Poor things.

Guess what? I'm on vacation next week (((don't faint anyone LOL))) I just need a break, I'm burnt out. Hopefully I can cuddle on the couch (lindat lol) at least one day lol.

Whats shaking with you all?

Good Morning
It is certainly a time we can all be thankful for where we are today..no matter what is going...or how bad it seems...all you have to do is watch the news 5 minutes concerning Hurricane Katrina.....and you realize.....no matter where you are.it is a better spot than where they are! It is absolutely heartbreaking to watch...I cannot watch it for more than a few minutes at a time.

We need pray for protection over these people.Provision and protection. We also need to pray for the criminals that they will stop these desperate acts!

Labor Day weekend in the United States usually represents that last on the road trip or a day off work to relax.....this year it will be hard to enjoy..just watching what thousands are suffering through.

If you all believe in the POWER of Prayer...please PRAY!

Sincerely

Me too.....I heard on CNN today that some people at the shelters were being terrorized by people with ulterior motives and did not feel safe...please God protect them and kick the @#$% out of those with no conscience. What would possess someone to fire on helecoptors air-lifting handicapped people to safety?

I horrify easily, I was also appalled by that movie (Debra Winger was in it) that showed the background that lead to massacre of thousands of Tu-toos in the african country...(rains in April or something like that)....and I was extremely upset by the movie " The Devil's Arthmetic" which occured during the holocaust.

Gee Marie, you could have CALLED? I was up at 3AM, "binging" on 3 wheat-thins with cherry tomatoes" and a glass of chablis..... which resulted in me OVER-SLEEPING by @ HOURS!!!! oh geeze, and the dog is getting lazy, he doesn't even wake me anymore. I must have fed the cats too much last night, because they have stomach alarm-clocks that promptly go off between 4-5AM! not today, one was on my pillow and the other next to me with his back feet snuggled under the covers.

Paging Carla.......what is the price of your gas out there (do the conversion to US $$$ if you can---is the exchange rate still about 50%?) I remember that it is Imperial gallons, but not that much difference...

Hey gang ~ it is crazy around here. Things are tense – as ya’ll know the situation is awful and continues to get worse. It's hard for people not to be fearful and anxious.

The national news is picking up some of the violence going on down here. There are problems with opposing gangs in the Superdome - don’t know what they will do about that when they get to the Astrodome in Houston.

I got news this morning that an acquaintance of ours that is in New Orleans with the Core of Engineers was shot at yesterday. The one who told me about it was calling for me to pray for her husband bec he was leaving to go down there and do the same type of work.

Another close friend called before lunch, her son is a deputy and is helping in New Orleans and she is very concerned. I've known him since the day he was born ;-)

Our Lake Charles Civic Center (1 mile from my office door) has 2500 evacuees in it and it is WILD!

All the hotels are full and people are staying as far up as Dallas - their arena has now started taking in evacuees also.

A lot of our churches are trying to set up their gyms to take in between 50 and 200 of the evacuees for the next few months - most will have to set up some extra temporary showers, and feed these people for months, and then they will also have to have men that are stationed around the clock to keep an eye on things - it is all just mind boggling to me!!!! I cannot even imagine how mind boggling it is for those that have lost everything they had or lost loved ones.

Schools in southwest Louisiana and southeast Texas are trying to get the evacuee children into the school systems - which is great except that most of these schools don't have room for the kids they already have - it's just crazy to try to take it all in.

A lot of cell phones over here are not working, there are problems with trying to use credit cards and debit cards - most of the time they don't work bec of phone lines - everything is chaotic.

I really need to turn the news off, but every time I do, somebody walks in and wants to see what's going on and then I'm stuck on it again.

There ARE good stories coming out of all the tragedy of people doing wonderful and kind things to help each other – and those are encouragement to me. It is amazing to me that this kind of stuff brings out the best and worst in people.

It is all very overwhelming to me – everyone you meet has a story to tell about what is going on.

I think I need to listen to some of my Joel Osteen sermons that I have taped and saved ;-) I need something really positive seeping into my little soul!

On a much lighter note – today is our 26th Anniversary. Not doing too much, we are just very thankful to be together. Our sons and one of their girlfriends will be hanging out at the house tonight so we’ll jut cook steaks for everybody – which is always a treat at our house.

Hope it is peaceful in your neck of the woods!

Hugs & Blessings,
Cathy

Hi Marble - I can give you an approximate price . I don't have my little metric conversion calculator right by me, and both cats are sitting on my feet. (Bigboy on top of Lily. I don't THINK his intentions are dishonorable. That would be kittenophilia, and besides he's supposed to be neutered...)

We buy gas by the litre, which is approximately the same as a US quart. The prices are extremely volatile. Before Katrina, about C$1.00. Last night, C$1.25 , and today various prices average about 1.15. So that would be about $4.60 per gallon. I'm not sure about the exchange rate right now, but let's say our dollar is at .80. SO that means about $3.70 US. We've been paying a lot more than you guys for some time now, and it will continue to go up.

I'm really appalled at the lawlwssness in the disaster areas. I can see breaking into a store for water or food, but setting fire to empty houses? Shooting at rescue helicopters? Like that's going to help anything. Evil can only prosper when good people do nothing. I just hope there are enough good people amongst those stranded in NO to tip the balance and and win the day. I know the situation is dire, but playing Lord of the Flies won't make it any better. All those poor sick people at the Superdome who'd be safe in Dallas by now if they hadn't been forced to suspend the evacuation.

Sorry about venting. I just feel so frustrated and helpless.

Cathy, I don't know how far you are from the devastated areas. It must be horrifying to see hordes of refugees pouring in to the cities. And many of those are probably the ones that got out early and are in reasonable shape. Just unimaginable.

Wink Hello Ladies

This afternoon, I turned off the t.v. and put on some good old fashion Praise & Worship music (Maranatha), and I'm praying while I do my "chores" . I'm looking forward to this weekend...we're going to see Matt And the best thing is...we're going to have a 'contact visit'...so I get to hug him for the first time in months! We're leaving early Saturday morning, and we'll be traveling on I-10 for about 150 miles. I'm sure it will be busy...there are so many aid convoys, news services, etc. traveling to the Gulf Coast.

Cathy: I was just thinking of you, and wondering how things were in Lake Charles. We actually have at least one shelter here in Jacksonville, and they're thinking of opening up more . I've been watching the coverage too, and it both saddens and angers me. Sadness for those who've lost so much, and anger that thugs and gangsters are terrorizing even rescue workers . I'm glad your community is trying to provide a safe place for the refugees. By the way, Happy Anniversary!. Our is the 4th..29 years !

Marble, Marie, Kierie, and any other insomniacs: I'm usually up on the computer until 1:30-2:00 a.m. The java applets for the chat room don't work on my computer, but I have MSN messenger (see the icon on my avatar). Stop in and say hi

Carla: OUCH! I'll stop complaining about gas prices now

Leenie: I'm sorry that there wasn't a Memorial for your BIL. It helps to have closure

Liz: Hope you hear some good news about the job soon.

Stephanie: I hope your back will be feeling better soon. Just try to rest and take it easy.

CIN: I'm with you...prayer changes things

Hope everyone has a wonderful day.

Leenie, no I wasn't eating. I was so wired, I couldn't lay still in bed and DH deserved to sleep. After surfing I wrote for a couple hours, then had a long, yucky day at work. I'm beat now, but I'm going to pedal my exercycle to Dave Letterman. I don't know how much enthusiasm I'll put into it, but I will do it.

Wannabe, great job on not munching when you were feeling crappy. That's a great accomplishment.

CIN, I alternate between being so angry that our government is doing so little and doing that slowly and wanting to cry that these are or sisters and brothers and we as a government are letting them suffer. In other words, I think we need to get our military out of Iraq and let them control the lawless here. Then again, I'm so against us being in Iraq, I look at every reason to pull them out. Katrina seems to have given us a big reason to use our military at home.

Cathy, take care of yourself, hon. Thank you so much for the long post about what you're seeing. It's nice to know that most people are trying to help as much as they can. And HAPPY ANNIVERSARY!!!!!!!!!!!!

Stephanie, feel better. Back pain is just atrocious.

Well, it's time to vacuum, then exercise. Talk to you all tomorrow. Here's hoping for some good news out of the Southeast.
