Default Tardive Dyskinesia

Hello,

I am bipolar and take seroquel and well butrin. I love the seroquel and have lots of success with it. My dosage was recently increased with also helped with things... I feel great. Better than I have in a very long time.

However, I've noticed muscle spams in my feet, legs, arms and torso. After digging around online I read about tardive dyskinesia, which is a side effect of many atypical anti psychotics. It can cause uncontrollable muscle movements and things like facial ticks.

This upsets me because I really like the drug combo I have and am afraid to start all over with another medication. Also, a lot of the new anti psychotics fall into the same realm as Seroquel with that side effect.

As I write this I'm waiting for time to pass so I can call my pdoc... (sigh)

Has anyone else ever experienced side effects like this??

I am not bipolar but my hubby is and has had TD in various degrees. he was the worst on abilfy. He was sucking and chewing his tongue. He has some from seroquel just little jerks..if the jerking gets bad there are meds they can give you to counteract the jerking. I dont know what dose you are on but you might want to ask your dr about serqouel xr. Its suppost to stretch out the dose of meds and hubby cant take it at night because it doesnt make him sleepy. Be sure and talk to your dr..and some benifits are worth some side effects...just dont let them get to bad. Glad you found a combo that is working for you!!

Thanks for the reply. I'm glad to find someone who has experience with this. I spoke w/ my Dr, and she said that I shouldn't be overly concerned. I do notice things but they don't really rate as TD.

My Doc was happy that I called though, just to make sure. I take 300 mg of seroquel at bed. NOt sure what kind it is. I've been taking it for a while and it works well.

Maybe keep a journal of what you are seeing...keeping a journal really helps your dr to see what is going on between visits. Hubby is on 300mg at night and 50-100 mg in the am. Its the only thing that really slows him down when he is manic...

hubby took a high dose of vitamin E when he had it bad...never could tell if it was that or time that lessened it.

When I started Abilify a couple of years ago, I did have sporadic tics that lessened over time. My pdoc does seem concerned about TD. She does ask me if I have strange facial symptoms once a year though.

Yep, I have it. It does suck, I take Seroquel too. I think it's actually Restless Leg Syndrome rather than TD. If your tongue starts going mad, then worry. Otherwise, keep away from stimulants, makes it worse.
