Walktober Challenge

I originally posted this in the Exercise forum, but someone pointed out that it might be better off here....

This was a great idea that is going on at my offices. The idea is to set a goal for minutes walked and then try to reach that goal in October.

The Happy Walktober
A goal of 300 minutes is about 10 minutes daily.

The Healthy Walktober
A goal of 600 minutes is about 20 minutes daily.

The Heroic Walktober
A goal of 900 minutes is about 30 minutes daily.

The Herculean Walktober
A goal of 1800 minutes is about 60 minutes daily.

As a beginner, I am aiming for the Healthy Walktober, but I would love to surpass my own expectations and have as many of you along for the ride as possible. Accountibility is key for me and tracking out daily minutes here would keep us on track. Walking, jogging, running, treadmill, whatever...

Let's just get those legs moving!!!

c_laura 09-20-2006 08:35 PM

I'm in, challenges are just about the only thing that keeps me going motivation wise, it sparks my competitive spirit. I think I'll aim for the Heroic Walktober and 900 minutes in October....

dustcatcher 09-20-2006 08:40 PM

Sounds great to me! I will try for 600 minutes. Are we starting Oct 1st?

I am excited about this challenge too. Hopefully it will keep me on my toes...or should i say, feet. ha ha.

Kellie, you might want to sort of post about which thread you want this to be in, either "chicks up for a challenge" or the exercise thread. Just a thought. But it is cool that you opened it up in two threads, that way twice as many people see it and can join.

Looking forward to making me a ticker for this challenge.

Are we not including and bycycling? I rode my bike for 20 yesterday. ;)

jcatron243 10-02-2006 05:04 PM

I would try for the 1800 but I don't think I would come close unless I counted the time I spent walking at work.

Hooray! I got a buddy! If you are not used to that much walking I would NOT recommend pushing yourself! You could get burned out, severely fatigued, or hurt yourself! As you can see by my months I worked up to that! How often do you usually walk? I know what ya mean by your butt hurting. I got on a bike yesterday for the first time in years and I am sore! lol

JasonsLea 10-02-2006 07:15 PM

Sign me up for the Heroic Challenge! I used to be a huge walker. Let's see if I can be again. :)

dustcatcher 10-02-2006 11:30 PM

Jasmine31 10-03-2006 10:16 AM

Sounds good everyone!

10~2~06 Okay I walked 60 minutes yesterday!

nawchem 10-03-2006 11:18 AM

Yah even the dogs getting in shape!

Jas count the bike, why not it takes as much or more effort as walking. I'm not in shape at all, I made the mistake of jogging a little on sunday.

I did 79min today, pleasant pace!

TiredofWeightin 10-03-2006 04:33 PM

WOW, such a response!! I can't belive that so many are such enthusiastic walkers!!! YAY!! What fun!!:carrot:

So I am working on a list of participants. I think that I will just edit the first post daily. I'm keeping a spread sheet but I am not sure how to link it just yet. Any other suggestions?

Spanks: Thanks for the link, I'll check it out!

Jasmine31 and nawchem: HOORAY!! How inspiring!! It would be awesome to see you guys hit it!!

Count the bike!! Anything that gets your legs moving is what we are looking for!!!

Hooray for strong legs and healthy doggies!!!

almostheaven 10-04-2006 09:55 PM

I think I'm somewhere between Heroic and Herculean. Didn't get to walk Sunday. Monday, I walked/ran 7.5 miles. Yesterday, I did 5.5. Although, I couldn't get there today, had to get a tire changed. And now it will be raining, have a birthday party/doctor appt./birthday gift buying tomorrow to do, and will be working with the realtor and bank Friday on the house we just signed the contract on. Too much to do, too little time. On a good week though, I spend 4 to 5 days at the park, at least 2 hours each time. So 8 to 10 hours a week. Part of it is running (usually 2 miles), and the rest is walking, half level and half hills.

Jasmine31 10-05-2006 12:10 AM

That is great heaven!

It wouldn't open for me either weightin. I have heard so much about the elliptical machines, what do they do??

October 4, 2006 60 minutes!

dollypie 10-05-2006 11:26 AM

Oct. 1: 20 minutes, walking dog
Oct. 2: 55 minutes, treadmill & walked dog
Oct. 3: 30 minutes, elliptical
Oct. 4: 65 minutes, treadmill & walked dog
Oct. 5: 50 minutes, elliptical & walked dog
Oct. 6: 35 minutes, treadmill
Oct. 9: 30 minutes, elliptical
Oct. 10: 30minutes, treadmill

I have :running: a total of 315 minutes!

:woops: Only 585 minutes to go!

Jasmine: The elliptical is good if you have a bad knee because it does not have as much impact. I like to run/walk sometimes, but can't do it on the sidewalks because my knee starts to hurt so much. Also it really gets your arms involved if you use the one that has the moving arms. I also feel like I get a my heart rate up higher and faster than just using the treadmill or walking outside. You can also go backwards to get those quads going.
