somedaysunny ~ I am hoping you are feeling much better today! Good luck with your exam! On a great note, you came in 1st place this week!!! Fantastic job!

cattails ~ Thank you for the warm welcome. I am rereading this thread, getting to know everyone...it is so nice to be here.
Mental demon, that sugar, calls my name in the evening/night. I am vowing to block it out, using prayer as an option and other techniques that have served me well in the past. It is just the first few days that seem endless and physically debilitating. I am in a good place today and know that I can beat this! Thank you for your input about South Beach. I am looking in to it.

And to all of us, we are in the game, one day at a time! Let's keep on keeping on, keeping our eye on the prize!!! Happy Hauntings!

Hey Everyone:
Have any of you followed the recent story in the NY Times about Express Wt. Training? According to a recent study, as long as you work a muscle to exhaustion (perhaps with heavier wts.), you can get the same result as others who work out for longer times.

I thought it was interesting. I have been shortening my workouts lately, just because of a lack of available time. I generally do legs on one visit and then upper body on the next. I like to keep moving at the gym and get out as fast as I can. Most of my recent workouts have been for less than an hour (generally between 45 -55 minutes). I guess I can quit feeling guilty for working out for less than an hour, if I focus on the strategy indicated.

I'm thinking you have to be careful about preventing injuries, by not warming up sufficiently. Also, the strategy might not work as well for some people with physical limitations for certain body areas. As possible, I'm thinking this strategy might work for some people.

Here is the address:
https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/12/well/move/in-a-hurry-try-express-weight-training.html

My Week:
The good news is that I lost a little weight this week. I like to round up, so I claimed 192. Actually, when I weighed on Sat. & Sun., the scale registered 191.8 and 191.6 consecutively. I tend to think that my weigh-ins for 9-2 & 9-9 reflected my popcorn binging. I hope to be able to own 190 by next Sunday (if my lack of sleep doesn't stall my momentum). I've been on a roll with insomnia, and it really wears you down, after a few days of that. I tend to have problems with SAD (Winter depression). When the days start getting noticably shorter, I generally start with some problems.

It was a stressful week. It was a lot of work to get some things ready and start to puppy proof the house. A couple of days after my dog, Becca, passed. I ended up with a significant flea infestation. I think it originated from a ferral cat that hangs around. It's been an exceptionally hot and humid Summer, which sets the stage for fleas to get out of hand. Trying to contain the flea problem, and getting ready for a puppy wasn't a good combo. I discovered a new purpose for duct tape, LOL. I recently purchased some double sticky duct tape. It has been a good tool to capture and contain fleas with (at least the ones that jump on my ankles)

I intended to post yesterday, but it was a hectic day. Then, I had some Internet connectivity problems during the evening hours. I picked up my German Shepherd puppy yesterday. It was an 85-mile drive, but a bit longer if you include getting lost, LOL. I printed out a Google's Map and used that for the freeway travel. When I got off the Fwy., I engaged the "Waze App". I had entered and saved the route in Waze the night before. Something went goofy when I tried to use the preprogrammed Waze route, instead of leading me to my destination, it started leading me back home (but by a different route than I had just traveled). Since it didn't lead me back to the road I exited the fwy on, I stupidly followed it for a few miles, thinking it was a shortcut or that I had traveled too far on the road I exited the Fwy on.

I was glad to finally arrive home, with my puppy yesterday. It was a long hot day. My AC in my truck only works intermittently (mostly when the temp is 70 degrees or less). It's been 11 years, since I raised a puppy. I forgot how much time and attention they require. It may be a challenge to juggle everything for the next few weeks. I'm going to work with being flexible and not let myself get into "all or nothing" logic with my exerise. I may end up skipping some days at the gym, but I'm thinking about doing some exercises with free weights at home and perhaps do it outside while the puppy explores the yard.

Hope everyone has a good week. I'll try to get back later to read post and hopefully have some time to respond.

Chunkahlunkah: Wow! How commendable. Best of luck to you as you complete your program

Riestrella: I hear you on being too broke to buy new clothes. It’s why I’m so glad I have some hoarding tendencies lol. My closet is full of clothes I bought one year online around Black Friday for work; when they arrived none of them fit (a lot weren’t even close) but I refused to return them because “I’ll lose the weight soon.” Six years later…. Here’s to future shopping in our closets!

Hello everyone!

I'm back in Georgia after a week away to Colorado. Overall, I had an amazing time, despite the illness I battled throughout it. I think it was a nasty a$$ cold trying to break through but I wouldn't let it? Who knows.

I can say that after a week of taking a probiotic supplement it might be something I look into taking regularly. However I might have to shop around a bit, because the one I was taking was making me slightly constipated and gassy at the same time - and the poop and farts that did come out were so stinky! The benefit to taking one though was that my appetite greatly decreased, which resulted in a nice little loss while I was away. I'm not sure if that was because of the probiotic, or the cold I was fighting, but I'm intrigued by the concept of probiotics all the same.

I'm really happy to be back and reunited with my pet cat! He was very happy/confused/mad when we came in, then at 2am he decided to lay his face in front of mine and hug my neck in forgiveness. I've missed him!

Unfortunately, I was completely inactive during my vacation, I took my running gear in the hopes to go on at least 1 or 2 runs but I failed at that. I did go on a nice 3 mile hike once, but that wasn't really enough! Because of my inactivity I'm so very behind for my 5K training, so today I'm going to sit and plan out my runs in a way that means I'll make up for lost time this week.

Hope you're all having an awesome week and happy Friday! This weekend I'm going to be busy busy with a parade on Saturday then Sunday it's DnD time again.

MorningGlory - Thank you for your prayers and you're so welcome, I'm here for you whenever you need it! Haha, I had not thought about being a life coach, I feel like I would need to get my own life on track first!! But I truly appreciate the compliment.

munchey - It's an interesting strategy, but I would never recommend it to people who weren't experience in weight lifting. Plus I think diet needs to be on point for such a technique, the right amount of protein for muscle recovery would need to be in place for it to not ruin your body. How is puppy training going? It is such hard work raising a puppy, but worth it if you put in the time. My SIL has a golden retriever and she did not train him, he's really naughty now he's almost fully grown. He would play bite my arms and legs and when I said "no!" he didn't listen. Those basic commands mean all the difference down the line! Have you named your new pup yet?

sunny - Congrats on the B!!

RunningRedHead - My mum does the same thing, I really want to go through her clothes and throw them all out!! I'm definitely more of a minimalist especially after moving countries multiple times. I do have a couple of pieces I have bought that I wanted to slim down into, but I make sure not to make a habit of it otherwise I'll end up like my mum with about 3-4 closets full of clothes that don't fit

Rie:
So sorry you haven't been feeling well, but I'm glad you did have some fun on your trip. I'm glad you cat made up with you. Animals have no way of understanding when we go on a vacation, so it's understandable that they feel abandoned.

I'm calling the dog "Cassie". The breeder went with a Greek theme for temp. names for the pups. Mine was Cassandra. Her sister was called Helen. Not sure what the boys were called. Although I could have went with a different name, I decided to abbreviate Cassandra to "Cassie".

I forgot how much work pups are. I've actually made some progress with potty training. It's required a few trips to the back yard in the dark with a flashlight, but the sooner she gets potty trained the better. She is using the We We Pads I have set up in a house area as well, but I think I need to get some pads that are more heavy duty. Even if I see her use one, and then immediately pick it up, there is some leakage.

Cassie will definitely go to obedience school. I plan to take her to the same classes I took my prior dog to. Chewing on people is a bad habit, that I plan to eliminate. Puppies tend to chew on anything and everything. Cassie will keep me very busy for some time to come. In the next couple of weeks, I plan to start getting her used to a leash. I got a couple of audiobooks to refresh my memory on dog training. I got one of Cesar Millon's books and the the other one was authored my Monks who were known for raising German Shepherds.

I need to brush up on my hand commands. If you use hand signals, in conjunction with the verbal commands, it can be beneficial. She definitely has to get trained. An untrained German Shephard would definitely be a problem, especially since her gene line is on the large side.

I think that overall, Cassie will keep me busy and exercising. If this week is a sample of things to come, I haven't had much time to think about food and that can be a good thing. If I'm busy, I do better at eating regular meals, but find I have less seconds, smaller helpings and less snacks.

munchie ~ I love the name Cassie! I definitely see that training her is quite the feat! I have never owned a puppy, and I see the necessity of all the training done at this early age. The love, joy and exercise she will bring will certainly be worth all your effort.

This week has been so much better food wise. I have gone back to work with an organization known as Visiting Angels - a home health care agency. Meeting new people, getting to know their methods for coping with illness and seeing the appreciation in their eyes for all the little things I provide, has made me more conscious of taking care of myself. I let go of the sugar this week and the cravings have subsided.

I love hearing about all your journeys - keep 'em coming!
Happy 1st full day of Autumn!!!

Down a smidge to 181.8 lbs today, my average is still 181.5 lbs which is nice. The ticker for my overall goal shows the weight now that it's far enough over to the right! I'm still expecting to gain a little now that I'm home and not walking around a lot/going out/appetite has returned. However I need to be diligent and not just lean on that and let loose.
I also planned out my next month of exercise days if I'm to train for the 5K completely. I'll need to run 3 times a week for about 4 weeks, but because the distances are so short I think it'll be fine!

Yesterday I had a nice productive day in relation to housework, I unpacked everything from our trip and also tackled the beast that was our outside closet on the balcony. It had gotten to be quite unruly with boxes everywhere. I tend to keep boxes for products that we might need to return, but over the last 2 years I hadn't actually recycled any of them! It was quite cleansing to organize it, now our suitcases actually fit in there and I don't have to prop them on something!

Hey Everyone!
I hope everyone ends their week on a good note. I'd like to join MorningGlory1950 in saying Happy Autumn. I have mixed feeling about Autumn/Fall. I like the crisp mornings, especially after experiencing a rather hot Summer. I tend to have a problem with SAD, so the shorter days (and less light) usually cause sleep issues and depression.

MorningGlory1950:
I'm glad you had a good week with your food. Wow, you've lost 4.4 lbs. so far. That's great, especially at your wt.

I've heard about Visiting Angels. Sounds like it can be rewarding work. I've thought about possibly getting Cassie certified as a therapy dog, and perhaps visiting nursing homes. Right now, it's just a thought. I'll see what develops. Currently, I volunteer at a Therapeutic Horseback Riding Ctr. It's a way to get in steps/miles, while benefitting a cause. Working with horse can be a therapeutic for me, as for the students.

Rie:
I'm glad your weigh-in pattern is favorable. Sounds like you have a good plan to prep for the 5K. It always feels good to have a good day with organizing and getting rid of things you don't need. I tend to put those things like that off too long. Half the battle is getting started.

Yippee, another pound down; I might make my goal after all! Nice to have the end of the tunnel in sight.

Munchey, My MIL used to volunteer at a local therapeutic riding program until it shut down. Those are just wonderful, they make such a difference to the students. And you are right, a pup is a LOT of work but sooo worth it! My boy Brodie is almost 4 years old now. When he first came to us, I spent all my time with him, on his schedule, watching over him and teaching him, taking him everywhere I could. Now he's repaying the effort: he watches over me All. The Time. He even alerted my husband when I got into trouble a few months ago and needed help getting out of the tortoise pen. Here he is with his much loved teddy bear. (Sorry for the ginormous picture!) Enjoy your girl.

Rie, you're back! I'm glad your trip to CO was so awesome! And you even lost weight! Too bad about the wicked cold trying to muss you up. What a sweetie your kitty is. Oh, I wanted to tell you that I finally got a headlamp and I LOVE IT! My husband borrowed it a couple days ago and he really likes it too. Thanks for the suggestion!

MorningGlory, way to go kicking the sugar habit! It is a real beast the first few days but feels so good to have that control back.

Hope everyone enjoyed the first day of autumn!

munchey - I hope you post more pics of Cassie over time.

Just a quick status update. So far, I'm down 2 pounds and have 3.6 to go. I think I'll be able to make it!

So much success happening in this thread right now. It's amazing to see. For me, I finally broke my 19 day plateau this week and moved down into a new decade. Yay!

Rie - sorry to hear you were sick while in Colorado I would like to join your challenge and have added my name and weight to the chart. I've just finished week 3 of a 12-week weight training program. Even though I've been on plan with both my meal plan and my exercise I didn't loss any weight but I did lose some inches which I'm happy about. My goal is to improve my body composition so that I put on muscle but lose the fat. My trainer weighs me and takes measurements every 3 weeks so I'll see what happens in 3 weeks.

Looking forward to doing one of your challenges again.

Week 3 chart everyone! If you don't see your name, you've been moved to the Standby! Ask to be put back in or re-enter your stats
