Lent 2009 Challenge

 everyone!

I was reading another thread and saw that Lent is coming up (Feb. 25 - April 11). I did a Lent challenge on here a few years back and I liked it. So I decided that for this Lent, I will give up soda and Jalisco burritos. Those burritos are better than sex (I'm sure :p) but they probably contain like a bazillion calories. Does anyone want to join me?

Rosinante 02-24-2009 03:01 AM

Yes please!
I challenge myself to lose a stone (14lbs) during Lent.

Good luck and thanks for starting this.

TXPaula 02-24-2009 07:51 AM

Well, here goes. I will give up desserts/sweets: pie, cookies, ice cream, doughnuts etc. I have been wanting to do this for a long time because sweets use up so many ww pts. Thanks for the challenge.

goodday 02-24-2009 08:46 AM

chocolate. 40 days chocolate-free, here i come :)

Newlywed 02-24-2009 11:24 AM

I am going to give up pop... Only because I am an addict.

angelinelosesweight 02-24-2009 05:28 PM

I am also going to give up coke. No more sodas for me:)

Lori Bell 02-24-2009 05:45 PM

My religion does not require me to give up anything for lent, but I had decided that I would vow to go to every Lenten service for the next 7 weeks. That would be 7 Wednesday services, 7 Sunday services, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday. (16 Church services in 7 weeks) As far as giving things up, heck, in the last year I have given up junk food, cigarettes and alcohol, so really giving up a vice is not really an option, since I have none left ;) But since Christmas I have gone over my daily calories 5 different times and my progress has really reflected that. Gosh, for this challenge could a person vow to stay on plan 100% during lent instead of giving up one thing?

nicki rose98 02-24-2009 08:10 PM

I honestly can't thing of any "items" to give up. I already gave up regular coke and plenty of sweets.

I do challenge myself to lose 10 lbs for lent though.

I think I will give up NOT exercising. There are sometimes I simply don't feel like exercising and I don't think that's an excuse. I challenge myself to stay OP with exercising for lent.

JasonsLea 02-25-2009 12:50 AM

Thanks for joining me guys!

Lori ~ If you wanna challenge yourself to stay POP for 40 days, you're more than welcome! :)

I'm adding eating desserts at work to my list! They make gooood cake at my job but I can never stop at one! So I'm just going to cut it all out.

Thanks for joining guys! Remember, Lent starts TOMORROW!

e32 02-25-2009 05:32 AM

lori--congrats on your progress! i'm with you. instead of giving something up i am committing to staying on plan. for me this means the gym. every. single. day. no excuses! :)

so, i guess you could say i'm giving up laziness and excuse making for lent!

good luck everyone--we can do it! :)

thanks for the idea jasonslea!

Rosinante 02-25-2009 10:13 AM

How's it going?
I'm 60% through Lent Day One and sticking to plan so far!

drakehewin 02-25-2009 01:30 PM

Ok, normally, I give up something that is rather easy for me, like chocolate or cookies. However, this year, I will give up alcohol. I drink all the time with colleagues and friends. In Japan, it is the thing to do. However, I am giving it up. I love the lord and my body and can give it up. I AM ALL IN!!!

clarelou 02-25-2009 01:34 PM

hey all, day 1 and il join ya's. im giving up chocolate, sweets, biscuits and desserts. also aiming to loose a stone. goodluck everyone. hows the first day going?

david 02-25-2009 01:35 PM

i started today...im gonna do lean cuisine for lent...i figure thats a good jump start

david 02-25-2009 01:38 PM

im having my coffee right now...later im gonna get on the scale and then not until easter

david 02-25-2009 01:39 PM

is it blasphemy to say sex in the city is a crappy show in a women's website???

david 02-25-2009 01:42 PM

i work for coca cola and we now have a 10 calorie vitamin water woo hoo!!!

angelinelosesweight 02-25-2009 02:58 PM

I LOVE the idea of giving up excuses for Lent. I'm going to gym up excuses on why I'm not working out.

Gym every day- no matter what- every single day:)

Lori Bell 02-25-2009 03:09 PM

Day one is going great! Just got from the grocery store and stocked up on all my favorite veggies, fruit, and good stuff. If I can make it 40 days totally 100% on plan, I should surpass my goal weight and *maybe* get into the 160's (which is were I *really* want to be!) So now I need to get out and do my 4 laps around the corn field. It's a beautiful day in Nebraska.

mizski 02-25-2009 03:15 PM

I'm giving up dining out for Lent. I think I could lose way more weight if I didn't eat out a couple of times a week. Even the best selections & taking half of it home still have a lot more calories than things you prepare at home.

p.s. I'm donating the money I save to charity. :)

Heffalump 02-25-2009 03:22 PM

I've been thinking a lot about what to do this time. I've decided I won't give up anything but instead focus on mindfulness and awareness - food related and otherwise - and about how I am spending (wasting) my time.

So, for the next forty days, I commit to the following:
  • eating without distractions - especially no eating in front of the computer
  • eating slowly and mindfully
  • turning off the computer before dinner and spend my evening offline

That's it, but to be honest - I feel like it's going to be ridiculously hard. :dizzy:

david 02-25-2009 03:39 PM

sounds like everyones off to a great start...im going to work now...thats an eating place for me so ive really got to watch my choices...no more energy drinks or fast food everyone have a great day!!!

david 02-25-2009 03:44 PM

Lori, I know you didnt say CORN FIELD!!! that sounds so nebraska

Ms Perception 02-25-2009 04:09 PM

Okay, I'd like to join you all. For Lent I'm giving up some time on the computer. I will limit my personal computer use to 1 hour per day during Lent. For me that's a huge cut-back since I communicate with many friends in other places via e-mail/chat plus doing my 3FC boards. I hope to use the time more wisely in activity and productivity which in turn should help with weight loss. We'll see how it works out.

LOL!!! Not at all

JasonsLea 02-26-2009 01:23 AM

How did everyone's first day go? I'm going to say that I totally crashed on the soda part because I'm such a dork. I got the soda and was half way through before my friend said 'Shari, you do remember that today is the beginning of Lent, right?' :dz:

david 02-26-2009 03:24 AM

my day went well...instead of lean cuisine i had a subway footlong tuna 1/2 at 3:00 and 1/2 at 8:00 cuz its ash wed....tomorrow starts lean cuisine...can't decide if i'll weigh in once a week or wait til easter...any thoughts?? take care everyone and great job!!!

Rosinante 02-26-2009 03:42 AM

loads of imaginative stuff on here!

well, I survived the day, although I'm glad to have an electronic food log, because I only ate 1022 calories, which is waaaay too low, I don't want to do that every day. especially not if I feel as ack as I do this morning. I'm sure I'll improve!

Good luck with Day #2, everyone!

Ms Perception 02-26-2009 09:54 AM

david- I weigh more often because it helps me keep on track, but some people prefer to not weigh-in as often because it stresses them out. You gotta see what works for YOU. best of luck!

As for day 1, I failed since I didn't decided what i was going to do until the afternoon and by then had already been on the computer more than an hour, so I'm not counting it as a failure, just a late start. Today I will succeed!

nicki rose98 02-26-2009 10:56 AM

I did my work out without any excuses yesterday!! Today is cardio and I plan on uping to 45 minutes.

dollypie 02-26-2009 12:01 PM

I would love to join! I am giving up chocolate and sodas! So far so good!

Lori Bell 02-26-2009 12:05 PM

Day one was a success! Day 2...so far so good. I'm about to go for my walk before lunch...and David, yes I do walk around a corn field, ;) (actually it's stalks/stubble right now as it's been harvested and too early yet to plant for this growing season. I used to walk on the road, but we are out in the middle of nowhere and there are some very creepy people who seem to enjoy cruising and boozing on our road. A couple Thelma and Louise look-a-likes scared the heck out of me a while back, so I decided it was time to find a new "track".

Ruthxxx 02-26-2009 12:19 PM

Well, I have absolutely given up sugar in any form. I had syrup on my Pancakes on Tuesday and that's it until Easter.
I am also going to accurately record my food (and any wine) on Fitday.

annie175 02-26-2009 02:03 PM

I am trying not to curse. Also not buying Starbucks coffee, I will drink it if you buy me one, but I am NOT buying any during lent. This is more of a money saving issue than giving up something.

I also heard maybe not giving up something for lent but maybe changing a habit or doing something positive for someone, an elderly shut-in or do random acts of kindness for lent instead.

david 02-26-2009 03:10 PM

funny lori bell...in oakland i just walk around the ghetto so i walk really fast JUST KIDDING ...actually right now im getting my exercise at work cuz when im home im taking care of my father in law with demensia...i have a very physical job and i love it...today im gonna do the lean cuisine...there are soooo many ways to LOSE weight, but its so hard to keep it off...im 48 right now and my blood pressure is perfect and my cholesterol is good but i know that cant last forever...i lost 30 lbs a few years ago and have kept that off so i know i can keep it off...everyone have a great day...this is a great website

Heffalump 02-26-2009 05:11 PM

Checking in! I'm doing OK. Eating without distractions feels weird - had to catch myself yesterday evening when I was snacking on some raisins and leafing through a magazine. It's so automatic! Today is going very well so far. I still need to work a bit on slowing down and eating mindfully.

I'm looking forward to an evening with a good book instead of surfing the net!

JasonsLea 02-27-2009 01:04 AM

 everyone!

I'm glad ya'll had a good second day and :welcome: to our newbies!

I did okay today, no soda or snacking at work. :)

Rosinante 02-27-2009 04:05 AM

2 good days gone, and I feel a lot better today than I did yesterday. i feel postively smug. That's not so good from a religious observance point of view but ok for the weightloss!

Hope everyone's days are good.

nicki rose98 02-27-2009 11:23 AM

Did good yesterday. Not only did I stick to exercising. i even pushed myself to do an extra 15 min. Now comes the tough part. The weekend. I usually can always find a reason NOT to work out on the weekend. So wish me luck!!!!

david 02-27-2009 12:14 PM

sounds like everyone is doing really well...i was pretty hungry last night so tonight im gonna arm myself with some fruit...right now im doing this reluctantly...i know it will get easier...one thing thats cool is that two other guys at work are also trying to lose weight...its not competitive but its good inspiration
