50 Mile Run

Right. The rules for this are pretty simple. First person to run/walk 50 miles total wins. Post whenever you add more miles to your total, and give the amount you increase it by and your new total. I'll edit the first post to keep track of everyone in comparison to each other.

Ready...Set.... GO!

SO FAR...

Tyler Durden- 15 miles

kittycat40- 14.5 miles

dangerouscurves76- 10.5 miles

ImpalaHoarder- 15 miles

Mrs Snark 03-26-2008 02:08 PM

Well okaaaaay! Since I am marathon training I might as well join this challenge!

Yesterday: 4 miles
Today: 3 miles

:)

kittycat40 03-26-2008 02:14 PM

I'm in on this one too!!
I've recently become friends with my treadmill again.
yesterday 2.5m
I'll use that as my start.
:) thanks for starting this :)

Mrs Snark 03-27-2008 09:53 AM

3 miles this morning. :)

dangerouscurves76 03-27-2008 12:27 PM

Hi all!

I'd love to join in on the 50 Mile Run Challenge. I'm currently training for my 1st 5K race! I could use all the motivation I can get to run/walk on the treadmill. :dizzy:

Yesterday: 4 miles
Today: 3.5 miles

Tyler Durden: You are my hero! I'm so inspired by marathoners. Any advice on how to increase my speed?

dangerouscurves76 03-28-2008 08:59 PM

????

:dunno: Hey! Where is everyone?

Well...I'm trying to stay accountable. Completed 3 miles today! :carrot:

iriswhispers 03-28-2008 10:04 PM

wow i'd love to join. nothing like a little competition to kick my butt back into gear! i've got a late start but if this picks back up hopefully i can jump in.

Mrs Snark 03-29-2008 12:02 PM

Friday was crosstraining for me, so no running.

I got in 5 miles this morning.

Dangerouscurves -- this will be my first marathon, though I've done a 1/2 marathon (and lots of shorter races) in the past. Good luck with your first 5k, you'll have a great time! Are you a new runner? If so, I wouldn't worry about speed and simply focus on good form for the time being. Are you following a specific plan to get you to your first 5k?

Mrs Snark 03-29-2008 12:03 PM

Iriswhispers, you should definitely jump into this. We'll be here, sweating! :)

Mrs Snark 03-30-2008 08:42 AM

Crosstraining for me today and a rest day on the schedule for Monday. Tues will be my next running day...

ImpalaHoarder 03-30-2008 09:53 PM

Sorry I haven't checked in for a while- I could make some excuses about fencing and having a lot of homework, but really I've just been slacking off- I've actually gained about five pounds. Well, I'll kick off my return with logging the nine miles I jogged/limped this morning.

ImpalaHoarder 03-31-2008 01:05 AM

Decided at 11:00 pm that what I really needed was a good run.

So, six miles more!

Mrs Snark 03-31-2008 07:21 AM

Nice mileage ImpalaHoarder!

I did a bike ride yesterday and I've got a rest day today, so no miles for me til tomorrow.

Happy running to everyone who is running today!

kittycat40 03-31-2008 10:50 AM

Let me update, 2.5 miles a total of four times last week. =10
Sunday, 2 miles.
Would you make mention of what good form would be? I'd like to do a 5k in April.

Mrs Snark 03-31-2008 01:42 PM

I think good running form involves carrying a beer in one hand and waving to everyone as you trot by with your other hand. Keep your head up and a giant, goofy smile on your face. But that's just me! ;)

But seriously -- there is some great new runner information here at the cool running site. The basics of "good form" are under the article Fist Steps...

lumifan4ever 03-31-2008 03:05 PM

I'm a little late jumping into this thread..but i'd love to join. I don't mind if i don't win....i just want to get back to running again and finally the day has become longer and for the most part, warmer...although not today. It's freaking 40 something degrees today!!! But anyways....i would love to try to get 50 miles in a month under my belt. I really want to start running/jogging/walking (lol) because i know it is such a great excersize for toning up your whole body. It tones the calves, the thighs, the butt, the mid-section....and that's what i really need to work on is toning all of that up while maybe burning off a few more pounds. Okay...i don't have any mileage to report yet cause i'm at work and don't hit the gym until about 3 hours from now....but i may actually try using the indoor track so i can get some jogging/running/walking in today. Which is a big thing for me because i don't run in front of people. I run on my old, lonely dirt road...so this will be big for me if i do this tonight.

Mrs Snark 03-31-2008 05:13 PM

I think you should go for it Lumifan, run/jog/walk in front of those gym silly old people, they won't care! I bet you'll post some mileage tonight! :)

iriswhispers 04-01-2008 12:12 AM

it's the only way to run. =)

2 miles today - easing back into the running for my 5k at the end of the month.

Mrs Snark 04-01-2008 08:00 AM

Morning everybody, are we all nice and sweaty? Got in 3 miles this morning while it was still dark (and semi-cool). I wish it wasn't so HUMID, though!

Total for this challenge: 18 miles.

kittycat40 04-01-2008 12:30 PM

so far total 14.5 miles

Mrs Snark 04-02-2008 07:48 AM

I got in 2 quick miles per my training schedule this morning. I'm back to running in the dark to beat the heat -- it sure is much nicer at 6 am than it is later at 9 am.

My total for this challenge: 20 miles.

How's everyone doing?

lumifan4ever 04-02-2008 09:24 AM

Morning all!! Okay...at the gym I actually went to class instead. I did 30 minutes of high impact aerobics. Man am I SORE!!! But it felt good too. Yesterday I did go for a short walk on my lunch break. I probably got in half a mile. Yeah...I know it's not much but I hate sweating and having to come back into work and sit at my desk and stink. (I am the receptionist so i can't hide from people).

Anyways...tonight i am planning a 2 1/2 mile walk/jog combo. So..tomorrow i'll post if i get to do it or not. But for now....i have 1/2 mile under my belt. LOL!!

iriswhispers 04-02-2008 01:24 PM

4 miles yesterday, so i'm at a total of 6. i better pick up the pace! =)

dangerouscurves76 04-02-2008 11:55 PM

Hi all! Sounds like everyone is doing great!:carrot:

I had to take a few days off from training to take care of some family drama but I'm BACK NOW! :) It occurred to me that I couldn't let anyone or anything stop me from reaching my 5K Goal! :woops:

Tyler Durden: I was following C25k for 3 three weeks but it wasn't challenging enough for me. So I started adding minutes to the jog segments and decreasing the walk segments. Right now, I can run about 25 mins without walking. Then, I walk a minute or two and start running again.

Yesterday's run: 4 miles
Today's run: 3.5 miles

Mrs Snark 04-03-2008 08:19 AM

Morning everyone!

Nice 4 miles this morning, in the dark. I love running before the sun comes up. I saw a cute little wild bunny!

Total challenge miles: 24.

DC76 - Sounds like you are rocking it out! What kind of time are you aiming for in your 5k? I modified the C25K as well when I did it. I usually kept the intervals the same but repeated them enough to run a 5k (at least) each time. But I was much heavier than you are now, so I made sure to go slower than I really wanted even if I wasn't as cardio challenged as I could have been -- because it takes time for all your joints and tendons (etc.) to strengthen and I wanted to avoid injuries at all costs!

What kind of "Adventure Race" is your 5k in May?

lumifan4ever 04-03-2008 09:43 AM

Okay....so last night i got 2 1/2 miles in. I jogged 1 1/2 and walked 1. So I am sooo stoked!!! Of course, don't let me fool ya....that was not 1 1/2 miles non-stop. No no no...that was 1/2 a mile slightly up hill..then walk down 1/4 mile, jog 1/4 mile down, jog a 1/4 up walk 1/4 up and jog 1/4 down and so on until my 2 1/2 miles were done. But still....i did it!!! yay.

So...that makes a grand total of 3 miles so far!!! lol. Maybe i'll get another 2 miles in tonight while my brother changes out my brake pads on my car. Depends on the weather. If it's raining...i don't dare go out and jog because of the stupid dirt road i live on. yuk!! Hope everyone else is doing good!!

dangerouscurves76 04-03-2008 07:02 PM

Dang...I'm super tired today! Since I took a few days off, I had to run for a third day in a row. My shins are not happy with me! :nono: I guess I'd rather deal with a little pain...than slack off and feel intense regret.

Tyler Durden: I'm not really sure what a reasonable time to finish a 5k is! I've never been a runner. I played field hockey in high school but we never ran more than a mile in practice. Plus I'm 32, so it's not like that was two years ago or anything. :D When I finally decided I wanted to commit to learning how to run I was surprised at hard it was. I can kick butt in Cardio Kickboxing class but was struggling through just 5 mins of running! I've checked out a few running sites and seems that everyone is running at a faster pace than myself. So that made me wonder if I'm not pushing myself hard enough. Just wondering what an average time is for finishing a 5k!

Anyone out there with running experience please give me a clue! :dizzy:

Today's run: 4.5 miles Total for challenge: 22.5 miles

dangerouscurves76 04-03-2008 07:07 PM

Ohhh I forgot..my adventure race includes a couple hills, over a bridge, through a marshy wet area. Just a few things to really challenge you. In hopes that you come back wet, muddy and slightly broken. But the best part is they're throwing a party for us at a brewery after! So BEER for everyone! :carrot:

Mrs Snark 04-04-2008 08:07 AM

Morning all! No run for me, I'm cross training today so I'll be out on the roads on a bike instead.

Luminfan -- Good job getting your run in! Intervals (walk/run) are very good for you!

DC76 -- don't worry about pace. Long time runners have much higher paces than the rest of us who started running later in life. And your pace, whatever it is, WILL improve the longer you train. Good base (which is lots of miles at a reasonable pace) is the first thing you'll acquire. I wouldn't worry that you aren't pushing yourself, it sounds to me like you're doing fine! For a long time after I first started running my goal was to run an under 30 minute 5k (for a flat road race, not an adventure race) and it took me almost 9 months of consistent training to get there. Some people are faster, some slower, it is ALL good!

iriswhispers 04-04-2008 10:33 PM

dangerouscurves: that adventure race sounds fun! specifically the marshy part...and the beer! running hills kill me so i don't know how i feel about that.

lumifan: i switch back and forth walking and jogging, too. at the moment i'm a bit out of shape and i cannot run/jog 3 miles without some walking in there! it's still good exercise and we're working toward less walking. keep at it!

tyler durden: i'm amazed by people who can work out (or do much of anything besides groggily sip some coffee) before the sun is up. i guess some people are much better with mornings than i am! =)

4 miles today... one mile was taking my parents' dog for a walk, but i can still count that, right? so i'm at a total of 10 miles.

Mrs Snark 04-05-2008 08:37 AM

Morning everyone! I got my 5 miler in this morning early (before the heat) and I'm glad because now I feel pooped!

iriswhispers: I'm definitely a morning person, by the afternoon a lot of my motivation evaporates and I get sluggish. Which works out well where I live because it is so much hotter once the sun comes up. Plus, there's so little traffic on the roads in the early morning, it makes running that much nicer.

Total challenge miles: 29

kittycat40 04-05-2008 07:55 PM

Hi all,
I am at 21.5 since I joined this challenge. Today I upped my treadmill walk/run to 3 miles. I averaged 13 min miles. I would love to get back to 10-11 min miles. But, moving (literally) in the right direction.
It's very easy for me to slow down to a walk or run at a lower speed on the treadmill (l am slow outside but don't generally walk as much). I need to be a little harder on myself. Usually I hold 2 lb weights so I feel like I'm burning more energy... hence I can be easier with the speed. But today since it was my goal to get back to 3 miles, no weights. But I still didn't really push the speed.

have a good Saturday night and happy Sunday.

Mrs Snark 04-06-2008 09:50 AM

Morning everybody!

No running for me today; according to my schedule I'm supposed to do an easy 30 - 45 minutes of cross training. I think I'll probably be cycling.

Nice job on the treadmill Kitty! I need to do a bit more treadmill work instead of all outside, it is good for the joints to get some mileage on the treadmill!

Hope everyone is having a great weekend!

kittycat40 04-07-2008 03:53 PM

I'm now at 24.75 miles.
-just checkin' in!

monday, monday....

Mrs Snark 04-07-2008 04:13 PM

Hey everybody! I'm on a rest day today, but I have 4 days of running coming this week. Yippee!

dangerouscurves76 04-07-2008 11:05 PM

ready to kick it...

:woohoo: It's Mon. and I finished my 1st brutal workout of the week!
Today's run: 4.5 miles
Total for challenge: 27 miles

Tyler Durden: Thanks for the great advice! It helped me stay focused and not be so hard on myself. I really needed that!

iriswhispers: I'm NOT looking forward to running the hills during my race! :( This week begins the torture of increasing the incline on the treadmill. :woops: I'm scared!

Mrs Snark 04-08-2008 07:52 AM

Hello runners! Are we happy this Tuesday morning? I got my 3.1 miles done in the rain no less. Ick!

Total challenge miles: 32

DC - You're going to be fine on the hills! No sweat!

Mrs Snark 04-09-2008 07:39 AM

Morning all, it was quiet in here yesterday! Hope everyone is doing ok!

This morning I ran a quick 2 miler. Looks like that is the last 2 miler on my training schedule and I'm going to miss this short little run! :)

Total challenge miles: 34

kittycat40 04-09-2008 10:13 AM

I eeked out 1 mile on the treadmill yesterday. Maybe inspirational music would help.
total 25.75-- still pretty cool to watch milage increase. I'm at least appreciating that apect of this challenge!

I don't see a chance for a work out today, though.

lumifan4ever 04-09-2008 10:35 AM

wow...ya'll are doing sooooo good!! I have been such a slacker so far. I got a 1/2 mile walk in on friday going to get me a pack of gum..that puts me up to like ....3 1/2 miles. I suck!! But okay...I will get 2 1/2 in tonight. So, i'll report back tomorrow and let ya know if i do it. I have gotta get the determination ya'll have. I wish i could run in the morning but i can barely get myself up and get ready for work in time. And i have to drop the kids off so early at school....mornings are just not the right time for me. Mid-day sucks too because i can't get all sweaty at lunch. That just leaves around 6pm. And it does take motivation to go excersize that time of day. But congrats to ya'll for the awesome job your doing. And i'm going to try to stop being such a slacker!!!!
