The CRAVINGS thread

I have been craving the same thing since I started my diet on June 21: DOUGHNUTS. A specific type: This cream cheese filled doughnut from the local bakery, which is conveniently open 24 hours a day.

So far, I have resisted. Although, I have often wondered if I could pull off eating just 2 of those doughnuts and NOTHING ELSE for dinner!

I'm going to try to hold out until my birthday in October...can I make it?

What have you been craving? How do you resist?

toofatforu 07-13-2006 11:09 AM

taco bell food.. and i usually cave in about once every two months lol

telemetrynurse 07-13-2006 11:34 AM

I'm crazy  about almost everything dairy queen shows in their commercials! :hungry: Those blizzards KILL me! :faint:
The new one, with cheesecake, caramel AND chocolate?!?!?!??!

How do I resist? I don't go to dairy queen EVER!

I try to have low calorie, healthy stuff around to deal with my terrible sweet teeth ( not "sweet tooth", sweet TEETH)

Like: sugar free, fat free chocolate pudding and fudgesicles (sp?)
Another thing that works well for my sweet teeth is to mix cottage cheese with some cocoa and splenda. I then use my hand mixer thingey to make it smooth. YUM.

The best way, for me, to avoid my cravings is to distract myself until bedtime. I've never had a craving survive my sleep!

Case 07-13-2006 12:07 PM

I am fortunate that, unlike my dear wife, I do not usually crave sweets.

My cravings are more like:

Chinese food
Thai food
Barbeque
Steak

And some of these things aren't necessarily bad for me. If someone eats a nice 8oz lean steak it can be quite healthy actually.

But I have trouble doing that, I always want a 16oz well marbled ribeye.

I have not yet devised a very successful way of dealing with these cravings.

happyveggie 07-13-2006 12:12 PM

CHEESECAKE AND ICE CREAM!!!!!!!

MaryKate'sPillStash 07-13-2006 12:24 PM

UGH. My co-worker, whose last day is today, just brought in a platter of CANDY--those Nestle Turtle things, cinnamon bears, salt water taffy....and it is sitting on the desk RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. Not fair.

ssgtswife33 07-13-2006 12:28 PM

I have been craving M&M's.... but I have resisted.

mammasita 07-13-2006 07:11 PM

Yeah I'm like Case, I rarely "crave" sweets.....I crave starchy things like mashed potatoes, chips, rice and beans, chicken nuggets, chili cheese fries, nachos, general tso's chicken....I can feel the stuff settling on my thighs right now:crazy: :D

HarpoChicoGroucho 07-13-2006 08:08 PM

Chocolate . . . anything fried and covered in cinnamon . . . apple pie/crisp/pastries . . . frozen french fries cooked in the microwave . . .BBQ hot dogs and hamburgers . . . & since it's 97 degrees here today, ice cream!!!!!!

ellis 07-13-2006 08:58 PM

Crepes. I make the best crepes. Crepes with chicken in white wine sauce. Mushroom crepes. I can eat about 20 of the darned things. They've gotta be about 500 calories each.

ScooterGirl 07-14-2006 10:35 AM

I crave chocolate chocolate chocolate!!! And the occassional roast beef sandwhich from Arby's! And Gyros! Dang I want a gyro!!!

LeaLee 07-15-2006 11:21 AM

AmberKay 07-22-2006 07:45 AM

Used to be chinese food...but then I cooked an all chinese meal for Christmas, and well...I was disgusted at how much sugar and starch and oil I ended up using. Grosses me out now.

I crave any combination of carbs, tomatoes and cheese.

da fat n da furious 07-22-2006 02:39 PM

I crave,,,enchilledas...lots of cheese and sour cream with a orange cream maragrita. And top if off with baked fruit in a torita,,,and loads of ice cream and rum sauce drizzled over it.
Or a cinnamon bun.

da fat n da furious 07-22-2006 02:40 PM

But the stupid thing I ate last night,,,chips...I don't even like chips...gag,,but I ate it. washed it down with a glass of milk....

AmberKay 07-22-2006 04:51 PM

Dude...I've been craving WATER! Seriously, I woke up thinking "I NEED water."

And teas. Green, Peppermint, Chai...mmmm. Ooo, and I really want cucumbers. This isn't normal for me to crave healthy things...

I'm getting good cravings!

da fat n da furious 07-22-2006 06:58 PM

Enjoy those cravings AmberKay....
I had a cup of cranberry juice blended with blueberries and a scoop of protein powder,,,seems it killed the sweet craving. Still want the cheese,,,and the goop....it looks like goop when its all together...cheese sour cream and salsa

AmberKay 07-22-2006 08:24 PM

I take my sweet tooth out with a glass of crystal light/peppermint tea.

Also, the grocery store in the city I just moved to has an entire section dedicated to organic foods(YAY!), so I'm going to look around there for some healthy things to replace the bad things that I love so much.

amb_lyn 07-22-2006 08:59 PM

I crave pickles, weird I know .. and green beans! Oh, and tomatoes... OMG I can eat a ton of tomatoes during a week!

DairyQueen 07-24-2006 09:26 PM

Meatballs. Italian, not Sweedish. I don't know why, but I'd wanted them for weeks.

maeble 07-25-2006 12:40 AM

I crave chocolate and or peanut butter and in any combination! But what's worse, I crave chocolate, but I hate it! it gives me heartburn and makes me feel pukey, but, I still crave it! that really sucks

kierr 07-25-2006 03:59 AM

Usually a craving for a good hamburger is my undoing. I love red meat but have high cholesterol, so only once a month....supposedly. :)

just_a_dreamy1 07-31-2006 01:21 AM

I crave....EVERYTHING!

I have random sweet/salty/tangy cravings. I have a million ways to deal with them...
* Have some. Completely restricting a food does NOT work for me...but I'm ok if I just remember that what I allow myself every now & then isn't as important as how much of it I have.
* Eat lots of fruit. I have a huge sweet tooth, but I would take fresh, ripe fruit over candy any day. I'm happiest when my fridge looks like an orchard.
* Just smell it. Over three quarters of my cravings are just a reaction to the smell of something. For me, most foods do smell better than they taste...so I just smell whatever it is and remind myself of that fact.
* Get some exercise/brush my teeth/go to bed/put lotion on. Stuff that distracts me & makes me feel better about myself than food ever can.

lewelaine 07-31-2006 07:21 AM

I crave hamburgers alot. Hamburger meat is so expensive I can rarely afford it but when I do put away the money for it I always eat way too much of it.

DoonieD 07-31-2006 07:34 AM

Bacon
Mmmmmm, bacon !

EvilToxicDuck 07-31-2006 01:37 PM

I have double whammy with my cravings. I LOVE French fries and sweets. and..i'm trying to become a pastry chef, and testing new recipes....bad bad bad. I'm slowly trying to find ways to reduce/eliminate them...but its a slow process.

DeafinlySmart 07-31-2006 01:58 PM

My strategy:

1. Avoid it for a while (cuz it may be a habit)
2. Find an alternative (40 cal fudgecicle for a chocolate candy bar)
3. If it is still on your mind, go get one. (just one..portion control it). Chances are it isn't as good as you dreamed it would be because you've started acquiring better taste buds now. If it is, you got your fix for a while.

snuggle 07-31-2006 10:19 PM

I crave Teen burgers from A&W. Drives me up the wall wanting one. Also crave chocolate really bad every few days.

AmberKay 08-01-2006 06:16 PM

Oh man, I love A&W's cheese curds.

I keep some dark chocolate set aside for my chocolate cravings. I don't like it in huge quantities like milk chocolate, so a little bit satisfies me. Plus antioxidants are always good!

DeafinlySmart 08-01-2006 06:43 PM

I went to the drug store and while I was waiting for my meds, I saw hershey's kisses. They come up with new limited edition flavors. Before I would eat the whole bag in one sitting. It really is something I can't have in moderation and they don't sell portion size small snack packs. I looked at 30 different types of candy. Obviously I was wanting something. In the end I reminded myself I haven't eaten supper yet and picked up some gum for the ride home!

It's sooooo bad that I know this, but if you freeze the chocolate or at least put it in the fridge for awhile---the heartburn and pukey feeling won't happen. I never use to like chocolate all that much when I was growing up, but for some reason PMS and chocolate go hand in hand for me! But I always felt icky after eating it if it was warm, room temp:p
I only get cravings every now and then, but when I get them boy are they HORRIBLE.........it's worse if I try to ignore. Sometimes I can substitute, but most times I just have to cave in. But then I keep the portions small:)

healthyme05 08-02-2006 02:01 AM

I'm so not a picky eater.
But my cravings are generally warm and soft foods (ie taquitos con queso) OR crunchy and salty foods (ie Kettle corn).

Flying Betty 08-02-2006 02:30 AM

I want ice cream! And really good chocolate and just about anything sweet or anything starchy with fake cheese.

I wish I could say that after a year of (mostly) clean eating that going back to greasy, unhealthy stuff makes me feel sick but it doesn't. My body doesn't seem terribly picky about what I put into it, just about what it wants. I don't keep any junk food in the house so when I get a craving I have to go out and buy it, which keeps some of the binging at bay. I doubt that the desire will ever stop completely, though I find it easier to resist the junk when I haven't had it in a while.

moonbeam65 08-02-2006 09:58 AM

I crave pizza. Saulty, cheesy, and hot... In a past (three months ago) I could have had a whole pizza for myself. Sad. I like chocolate too. I have one little piece a day now.
I try to remember an awful feeling after binge and how sick I felt. It helps a lot.

girl81 11-05-2006 10:56 AM

cold cereal. all kinds. i can't even keep it in the house b/c i have no self control with it.
i like them all but faves are rice krispies, raisin bran, corn flakes, puffed wheat/rice.

martiniforme 11-05-2006 01:02 PM

A combination of melted cheese, grilled chicken, and sour cream or hellman's mayo. I don't even let myself get close!

Allycatisfat 11-05-2006 01:54 PM

If it has sugar...I'm craving it.

callystia 11-06-2006 03:03 AM

Spaghetti. LOTS of it, with spicy sauce.

My hormones are wacky, plus I'm upset about something, so salt and carbs are the star of my mental menu. *sigh*

Tisha___ 11-06-2006 10:12 AM

Yesterday my good friend was feeling down in the dumps, so I volunteered to get her some fast food on my way home from getting my own fast food lunch. I got a small chili and a plain baked potato from Wendy's for myself. But, she wanted Taco Bueno. Taco Bueno is my BIGGEST trigger food. I love the stuff. Anyway, I haven't had anything from Taco Bueno in 2 months. Man, did that stuff smell good. And, I didn't even get her any of the stuff that I like from there. But it just smelled so wonderful. Seriously, my mouth is watering right now.

UWPiPhiAngel 11-08-2006 09:57 AM

I crave everything! I got both my mom and dad's genes; my mom likes salty and spicy foods and my dad likes sweets, so I used to eat something salty, then I'll have to have something sweet, then I'll crave something spicy, and it continues in a viscious cycle which is how I end up binging.

I wish I were a picky eater but there's pretty much nothing I don't like to eat except ginger.
