I like some buffets. I go in with a different mindset now than 20 pounds ago. I only take a little bit of those things that REALLY look delicious, and skip the rest. If I don't like it, I don't eat it. I have trouble passing up homecooking more than buffet food. My family is full of wonderful cooks.

Ugh...

Buffets. I think the problem is that I really like to eat. I love that "full" feeling. So, I just connect the idea of buffet and being full. My son LOVES buffets because he doesn't have to wait for the food to come. He is VERY 8 years old. So, we go maybe once a month. I start with a big salad and a ton of fruit. Then I go get literally a bite of everything I want, find a lean protein source (or three) and then reeeally load up on the veggies. They always have some kind of fatfree softserve/yogurt for desert so I do that with a bite of the desert that I really want on top of it. I still gain about three lbs the next day from the sodium...but when the swelling goes down Im usually not too much worse for the visit. Take care everyone!

When I go to a buffet I take the time to look it over and decide on 3 entrees I will try, veggies salad and fresh fruit. I skip the bread and have 1 small helping of 1 dessert. All that food doesn't have to be consumed at one visit...you can always go back another day and try something else. I leave feeling satisfied and happy with myself.

Buffets (and potluck dinners) are hard for me too. I start with a big glass of ice water with lemon. Then I circle the food and look for the freshest dishes, because some dishes look like they have been out and picked over and aren't attractive.

I take small servings of what looks good, go back to the table and taste everything. If it isn't wonderful, then I set it aside and don't eat it. I have to keep telling myself that it's wasted if I don't need the calories-to counter the I-have-to-eat-my-money's-worth mentality.

I once saw a little round boy at a grocery store salad bar standing at the bar eating from the containers with his grimy little fingers, cottage cheese, potato salad, mac salad. I went and told the store manager and he shrugged his shoulders and said, "What can I do?" I told him, "evict the child and replace the food or at least scrape off the top layer." I went back about 10 minutes later and the boy was still eating.

It completely turned me off from the cold food side of buffets, I always eat the hot stuff. Remeber the sneeze guards only work if the person sneezing is above the guard and not sticking their head underneath to reach the far side of the salad bar. Also, people don't wash their hands well, then they use the utensils, the utensils fall into the pan with the food, the next person reaches into the pan to grab the utensil....I keep thinking about stuff like that to try to stop myself from eating at a buffet.

I think I have watched too many documentries on buffets to want to ever eat at one again.
Admit that when in Vegas we would go hog wild....
