I can absolutely relate to your thoughts. So often the cycle we end up in between Thanksgiving and 1/1 is based on "tradition" or "family customs" or habit. Certainly works this way in my family...Grandpa's pumpkin pie recipe, Mom's stuffing, on x day we get the tree, on Y day we go shopping for presents...EVERY day we eat...
For me, it helped to research new things to do and either drag my family along, or go do things myself. Visiting local hotels that have holiday displays. Checking out the local paper for free festivals-- some bizarre (dress you dog as an elf parade, etc) and some predictable (holiday markets, etc) and checking those out...not to buy anything or participate but just to be there/ get out of the house, etc.
I also try to institute new traditions for myself and some members of my family---ANYTHING that does not relate to food will do. The cousins and I now go to a local park and play silly games on Thanksgiving morning, for example. Croquet, horseshoes, think PE class from elementary school ideas--some that don't require too much running and no skill at all!
I, too, have said "in January i will..." countless times as I am faced with a plate of my mother-in-law's "FAMOUS!" christmas cookie collection. I'm working on removing myself from temptation in as many fun ways as possible...hopefully if I stay busy enough, 1/1 will arrive before I know it, and I'll have had some fun as well.
Best of luck to you!
