Thumbs down Holiday Aftermath and the Slide to New Years Day

I know that in the past, it was really not the holiday meal itself that undid me, it was the days after that would really get me. Whether it was the leftovers or the "what the heck" attitude I would get, I was in for a long ride of overeating. Also, I would note that when I restricted myself at a holiday meal, I would feel resentment and often then eat what I didn't want to eat to begin with (sometimes on the way home!). There was a permissive mindset that would happen between Thanksgiving and New Years that seem to make it ok to just give in and eat myself into a mess, because I believed that on the first of the new year....I could finally get it together. (Obviously a repetive lie I told myself).

Anyone having trouble after doing well? What will you do to get back on track and stay there?

I can absolutely relate to your thoughts. So often the cycle we end up in between Thanksgiving and 1/1 is based on "tradition" or "family customs" or habit. Certainly works this way in my family...Grandpa's pumpkin pie recipe, Mom's stuffing, on x day we get the tree, on Y day we go shopping for presents...EVERY day we eat...
For me, it helped to research new things to do and either drag my family along, or go do things myself. Visiting local hotels that have holiday displays. Checking out the local paper for free festivals-- some bizarre (dress you dog as an elf parade, etc) and some predictable (holiday markets, etc) and checking those out...not to buy anything or participate but just to be there/ get out of the house, etc.
I also try to institute new traditions for myself and some members of my family---ANYTHING that does not relate to food will do. The cousins and I now go to a local park and play silly games on Thanksgiving morning, for example. Croquet, horseshoes, think PE class from elementary school ideas--some that don't require too much running and no skill at all!
I, too, have said "in January i will..." countless times as I am faced with a plate of my mother-in-law's "FAMOUS!" christmas cookie collection. I'm working on removing myself from temptation in as many fun ways as possible...hopefully if I stay busy enough, 1/1 will arrive before I know it, and I'll have had some fun as well.
Best of luck to you!

It's definitely a problem but it's kind of a good problem to have. We moved a few years ago and most of our family lives halfway around the world so we only seem them every few years. Our holiday season is fairly subdued - a couple of dinners with friends and coworkers plus a small turkey on Christmas. It's fairly easy to stay in control and I can't do too much damage even when I slip up.

Not having temptation is good but I'd gladly deal with the temptation if I could be with our extended family for the holidays. Good luck in staying away from the goodies and just enjoying the (low-calorie version of) the season.

I'm terrible during the holidays and I always have been. This past holiday, I ate so many Christmas cookies it made me sick. I felt like crap so that is what's motivating me to get back on track. I feel better when I eat healthy so i'm making a choice to only eat healthy. The sick feeling after eating so much bad food isn't worth it to me anymore. I've lost 80lbs so far and i have 30 to go so I'm making 2011 my year to finish it.

Along with eating healthy good, clean foods, I will continue to run and take classes at the gym. I'm also a huge fan of Turbo Jam and the Insanity DVDs.
