Question Doing it all over again! Help!

Hello Ladies,

I'm new to this forum and would like some input to my problem. I'm not new to this, I dieted in the past but I have to admit it I didn't do it the healthy way. And even when I tried to be healthier I used to binge on (god forgive me, nuts!) Yes nuts. I used to eat lot's of them but always have exercise to compensate for the damage I did. Well, on DEc 2006 I had a major anxiety attack followed by depression so I really gained weight. I stopped excersizing all together and started eating like a pig. I gained a total of 25lbs in like a year and a couple of months. Now, I'm sick of my clothes not fitting me anymore and want to be my my olderself. However, I don't know, this time I have tinnitus and I don't know how is this preventing me from focusing on weight loss but its really frustrating, especially that I'm an EE junior. You definately know the stress from school, as if life is not stressful on its own.
Okay I probably should stop complaining and focus on asking the questions.
I live with my family and they never eat healthy not a single one of them. They never excersize and when I make the effort to change the way I look and feel, I look around and find that I am surrounded with every type of junk food that exists in life. I can't focus anymore, it's really sabotaging. Please help!

P.S: English is my second language so please escuse me if anything does not make sense =)

I forgot to mention that they way I did it in the past was by drinking lots and lots of caffiene, both from pills and drinks. I damaged my body and it probabl was the reason I had the anxiety attacks.

Well, you are in a very tough situation! My husband does not eat the way I eat and probably never will so it is simply something I am going to have to learn to live with. Same for you. You want to do this for yourself so you're going to have to ignore the bad habits of those around you and focus on your own plan. Not easy, but not impossible either.

If I were you I'd have a very detailed plan with lots of mini-goals and structure to help me stay in the groove!

I know how hard it is to maintain control when you are surrounded by temptation and by those that are not necessarily 100% supportive. I have found that when I stop focusing on what I shouldn't do (like eat the cookies I get for my kids) and start focusing on where I want to be, that I can set those thoughts aside. It is really a case for me where I had to go cold-turkey. Even though many eating plans allow you to splurge (with points, etc) on occasion--I just cannot start with certain foods (like chips or cookies) or I will find myself eating through the whole bag. School is tough, so be sure to treat yourself in ways that don't involve binging!

I will try my best to stick with what I do. Regarding having a detailed plan, can you give me some examples of things that worked out with you please.

PudgieMom thanks for your input. I believe that I may have done it subconciously though, in my previous attempts to lose weight. I think that I should do this.

I made up a meal plan (several weeks worth, then I mix 'em up and rotate them) based on the total number of calories I was aiming for each day, and I then chose a training plan to follow.

I follow both plans to the LETTER. So I'm not very spontaneous in what I choose to eat or what exercise I'm going to do, but in giving up that spontaneity I've gotten structure I can rely on -- no matter what my emotional mood swings are doing. I can be freaking out all I want for I have a concrete, written down plan I can clutch in my hot, sweaty hand and refer to at those moments. I think at the beginning of the effort to try and permanently change my lifestyle habits this is key for me.

Dear ouch,
I feel for you. Sometimes I like to think that I am relatively strong and resist tempation well, but I have to admit it is probably much easier for me since I live alone. I don't buy junk food and there is none in the house, so even at those times when I would give in to urges for mindless snacking, there really is nothing to snack on (other than almonds or dry apricots). Good thing I have not developed a taste for dog kibble!!!! <VBG>
It must be so much more difficult to stay on track when people around you are having burgers, fries, chicken wings, or whatever "forbidden fruit" your family prefers.
Can you cook for yourself? If you use a crockpot and make a big batch, then you can portion it and freeze half of it. I do this all the time. I tend to cook in military amounts (I don't have time or the will to cook every single day) and bring all my food to work so that I don't have to buy fast food etc.

Stay strong!

Welcome and good luck. Please don't apologize for your English, it is just fine. I have heard worse from people with English as their first language. I think you will have to prepare your own meals and look at the junk food around you as poison.

Welcome! My family eats whatever they want whenever they want and they used to leave their delicious fatty foods everywhere, constantly tempting me, so I asked them to hide it from me. For the most part, when they buy their snack foods, they'll try to keep them in their room so I'm not tempted to devour it. Maybe you can ask your family to keep the bad foods out of your sight to help you out. I hope it all works well for you

I totally understand what you mean. Yesterday, I allowed myself some sunflower seeds and I reached the pointed where I binged on pistachios. So, yes no nuts for me. They are my weakness!

First of all thanks for the input! When my sisters buy junk they just eat it or hide it in their rooms. But the problem is that I cannot control my dad. He just buys junk regularly. To him, food is part of showing love or something. He's evil.

I think you really need to concentrate on what goes into that junk food! My brother doesn't eat all day, he lives on caffiene and cigerettes then at night he will eat a whole large take-away. And I watch him stuff his face and I can just see all of the oil and digusting trans fats in that food! But I think to myself, he is making a concious decision to harm his body...

If you get into the habit of thinking just how disghusting the food is you'll probably find it's quite easy to feel disghusted about it rather than tempted :P I always feel a bit spiteful too and want to rub it in my families face that 'while your filling your body with rubbish im healthy!'

Best of luck, You're doing great!
