Default Question about coffee and carbs ....

Ok, I'm on day 2 of Atkins, and so far so good. The only thing I can't give up at this time is coffee, but I have managed to cut way back. I'm limiting myself to 2 to 3 cups/day. Anyway, here's my question:

on the FitDay nutrition tracker it says that regular ground coffee has 1 carb in it. is this true? plain black coffee has carbs? I mean, I'm willing to take a carb hit on splenda or 1/2 and 1/2 but one for the coffee itself? That effectively means that 1 cup of coffee is costing me 3 carbs.

Can this be true? (If it is, I think I'm going to cry)

THanks,

Nikki

Hi Nikki,

Yes, coffee has carbs. I believe its 1 carb / 8 oz of regular coffee (really .967 gms per 8 oz but rounded off it = 1 carb). What I would do is take a HUGE mug to work, probably 24 oz, add one table spoon of heavy cream which has 0 carbs according to the carton but it could count as one. Then to sweeten it up, I would use Davinci's Sugar Free syrup which has 0 carbs, vanilla or what ever flavor I could find, either via internet or Walmart. So you see, my BIG!! 24 oz coffee would only be 4 carbs at the very most.

Hope this helps.

Splenda should be counted as 1 carb per pk as well.
When I got to work I would use liquid sweet n low (I know I know) but it has 0 carbs

Leenie,

Thank you for your quick reply. OK, I'll take your advice, pour my 2 cups of coffee in a big mug and switch from the splenda to Davinci syrup (saving 2 carbs) and then switch from 1/2 &1/2 to heavy cream. THen my coffee should only cost me 2 - 3 carbs per day instead of 6 - 9.

Thanks so much, I can handle that kind of trade off.

Nikki

Sorry I can't help on ideas of how to make coffee last longer. I'm not a coffee drinker. I get my caffeine via a can. Diet Coke (hey, if nothing else it's eating fat in my stomach ) is usually my choice lately.
Congratulations on at least cutting it back as much as you did. THAT is an accomplishment
