Calcium?

  • I need to get more calcium into me these days....if any of you take calcium which one do you take?

I wanted to get the chewable ones but want them to be sugar-free. When I looked at one on-line that was sugar-free it was sweetend with Splenda but still had 3 grams of carbs. I can't really afford the added 3 grams per day even though I know it is important to have the calcium.

    Anyone have any suggestions?
  • I had once upon a time posted a list of good foods that are high in calcium and how much they contained, but I think it was lost in The Great Crash of '04. I'll dig around and find the numbers for you again.

I do take a supplement also, just the swallow-it-down kind. And my multivitamin provides a good-ish amount as well. From what I've read, women should have around 1000-1400 mg of calcium per day. The amount used as the "RDA" on bottles and such is 1000 mg, so if they don't have a mg count on the label, it's easy to figure out how much there is. If it's 24%, that's 240 mg.

    Anyway, I'll make another list
  • Ah, .....my bottle says it is 30%
  • Ok, here's a short list. For comparison, 8 ounces of milk has 300mg of calcium.

    SF soy milk (8 ounces) - 300mg
    Swiss cheese (1 ounce) - 270mg
    Firm tofu (1/2 cup) - 250mg
    Spinach (1 cup) - 240mg
    Cheddar cheese (1 ounce) - 200mg
    Mozzarella cheese (1 ounce) - 200mg
    Broccoli (1 cup) - 180mg
    Almonds (1/2 cup) - 180mg

I'll keep adding on as I find things.
  • Thanks StarPrincess....keep em comin. Maybe I won't have to swallow those big old horse pills after all
