Worried LC Won't Work This Time...

  • I am totally ready to get going on my weight loss. It drives my husband crazy because I usually research something to death before taking any action, but this time I have some past experience with LC dieting and haven't done a lot of research before starting again, although I do have a bunch of books on hold at the library to help me refresh my memory.
About 9 yrs ago I tried a diet called Protien Power by Drs. Eades. I lost a total of 38 lbs in a couple of months, but gained it back over the years because I didn't believe and apply how to eat right and had a couple of pregnancies to boot. Now I know how to eat right, but need a quick start to getting to my goal. I've tried to eat LC a couple of times over the years, but didn't have the same results as the first time.
Does anyone else have a problem with LC not working a 2nd time around, or is there something I can be on the lookout for to be sure it does work.
Yesterday was my first time back on LC and this is what I had:
    • Beauty Elixir-fiber, supergreen food, flax oil
    • Scrambled eggs, diced ham, cheese
    • 2 string cheese
    • 3oz ham, salad w/ blue cheese dressing (home made)
    • Cobb Salad (lettuce, eggs, bacon, cheese, tomato and cucumber(2 tbs each), 2oz ham) w/ blue cheese dressing
    • Beauty Elixir
    • Apple Cider Vinegar tonic w/ 1tsp honey
I'm guessing my carb count was between 20 - 30. I havent' set a goal daily Carb count yet.

My issue is in transitioning from LC to healthy daily lifestyle eating. I'm afraid I'm too lazy to do it right.

I'm looking to add exercise by the end of the week. I'm committed to trying this for 7 days before deciding if it's working this time or not.

Sorry this went so long, but if you had time to read it and have some suggestions for me... I'd greatly enjoy them
  • I think you can't compare past successes to current progress. The aging process, changes in lifestyle, and the cumulative metabolic effects of repeated dieting attempts means that most of us can't lose weight as quickly as we were able to in the past.

"Too lazy to do it right," is a risk of every lifestyle change any of us ever makes. There are no guarantees, and we only know if we can do it, by doing it.

For me, carb counting is the logical choice because my doctor recommended it for my insulin resistance, and I very much notice that my hunger is more manageable when I eliminate processed carbs and limit unprocessed ones.
  • ^^She said it all!

Just a thought, though...Honey purportedly boasts nutritional prowess, but a teaspoon has about 6 grams of carbohydrate and can cause other issues for those who have issues with simple sugars.
  • I read an article (I think from Sparkpeople) that said it takes time for the body to adjust. Which is frustrating when I'm looking for a quick start! It said just be consistent with food and exercise and the body at some point will kick in. That our metabolism/ability to lose weight may be groggy, but is still working.

    I wish you luck!

  • Thanks all
Thank you for all the feedback. It is good to have confirmation of my own doubts that it may go slower, but that it is ok. I definitely will be eating less processed proteins this time around. That wasn't important to me last time- I ate so much junk (pig skins, meat sticks etc.) It still worked diet wise last time, but I never dealt with the junk eating reasons.

I am going to keep my eye out to see if the honey is sabotaging me or not. The tonic helps with my sinus issues and as long as it doesn't prevent the plan from working, I'll gladly use the 6 carbs on that.

In fact my supplements, vitamins and honey take up about 10 carbs a day- but it's worth it to me because it gives me the fiber and nutrients I'm missing from fruit and whole grains.

I'll make my first evaluation to see if it's working on the 7th day. Unless you think I should give it longer.
  • I think the key for me is that I finally had to look at this as a life change - not a temporary fix. I've been overweight forever. I finally realized that if I wanted to make lasting changes (and I DID!) that I needed to find what would work for me for the rest of my life.

Over the last year, my diet has been one of transition. I've gone from the low-fat to low-GI to moderate GI to now Atkins. I found that I wasn't losing on low-fat and I wasn't willing to drop my calories any lower.

In 3 weeks on Atkins, I've started losing again and other than a few jittery feelings, I feel better than I've felt in ages. And, I don't miss the white stuff or the sugary things. I truly believe I can eat like this for the rest of my life without problems.

The other thing I've done is really dove (dived?) into the research on the benefits of low-carb eating and all the falsehoods being circulated about eating this way. It's certainly helped me become more convinced that this is a proper and healthy way to eat.

Good luck and yes, it will certainly work if you follow the program. There are so many success stories out there to cheer us all on!
  • Welcome beautypursuer. You have already gotten some very good advice. I am a protein power follower also and there are a couple of us now on this board. There is also a specific protein power board and you may want to visit that as well for specific advice about that program.

A lot of people find things go a little more slowly the second time around but it does work.
  • this is my third go round I did great on the first and stuck to it, until my job lost me, second time I did great as well ujn til i again got lost in my job, and lost my motivational kick, now I have no choice, it is wither this or something more drastic. I have talked to my doc and she is very worried about me so here I am. and I too am a fellow PPer. if you get going strong then you will drop fast as soo as your body recognizes what you are doing thne the water will fall off. just realize that fast weight loss is not a good thing. you body will slow down to a more managable level, (and you need to for the kids) Welcome to the board.
  • Thanks for the encouragement that it will work but probably more slowly than when I was a young chick
I definitely know it has to be a total change and know that the white stuff is evil to the core. I'll see if I can find the protein power board to get more ideas. thanks so much again.
  • Hey BeautyP..welcome back!!! I too, am a 3rd timer! (3rd time's a charm...ya know!) One thing I'd like to add is that although eating processed foods are okay on induction, I don't suggest them for long term maintenance! The beef jerkey, cold-cuts, and other processed meats can sometimes be the culprit of a stall (high amounts of sodium)! Instead, I try to practice "clean" eating. It's a good habit to get into and does work for long term maintenance. By "clean", I mean stay away from anything processed. Eat cooked chicken, fish, lamb, steak, salads, veggies, eggs, etc. After induction (2 wks) I'd start adding more carbs (good ones, as suggested)...this will gradually get you into eating habits that you can sustain for the rest of your life. Habits can be bad (which most of them usually are), but Habits can also be GOOD! Start forming GOOD HABITS now...and I think that will get you through the rest of your life. Here's to good eating. and YES, the weight will go, but this time...it's gonna stay off! Joyce
  • I've gone off and on Atkins many times. It always seems to work for me at the beginning very quickly. Just about as quickly as it did the first time. I think what has changed, or what tends to sabotage my attempts (beyond the first one) is that I know what to expect, that I get bored or that I think I can eat artificial foods.

When I eat clean (meats, veggys and cheese/dairy) I tend to lose and lose rapidly. When I add in artificial sweeteners or real sweeteners or starches or junk food disguised as low carb it doesn't work as well.

I really think that the honey will slow your weight loss. It isn't just the amout of carbs in a food, it is the concentration. It is how much at once and how often. Spiking insulin levels can mess things up. Eating anything sweet can make you crave more sweets. Honey wouldn't work for me. But we all make our own choices. So if it works for you that's ok.
  • Thanks again... I don't like the processed stuff now whether I'm on a LC or not. Thanks for the confirmation to eat good whole foods.
  • If you haven't found it already, try www.proteinpower.com

There is a specific thread there called "going for the silver/bronze shot" It is a group of us who are second or third timers sharing our experiences about what is working or not working for us. I'm participating in this discussion too (same user name).
  • cool, I wondered what that link meant but hadn't had the time to investigate it yet.
