Bambi-there is a discussion on the PP forum about "the Golden Shot" Anything in your book about this? There is a perception that you may only get one chance to lose weight easily on a low carb WOE and if you fall off the wagon and decide to do this again, it will be considerably harder. The situation I find myself in. We have a little group of "repeaters" on the site now who are comparing notes. JG-do you know anything about this concept? I hadn't heard of this previously. I think intuitively we all know that yo-yo dieting leads to a more resistant metabolism but I had not heard it described quite like this.

Yes, it's in the refrigerated area. If you have Asian markets nearby, they carry it in the frozen and in canned sections too.

Aud, I sometimes fry the tofu separately, sliced thin or in chunks. If I am lazy, I just chuck it in when the veggies are close to being done.

Hey Aud, this is a pretty good understanding of the Protein Power program:
http://www.lowcarb.ca/atkins-diet-an...ein-power.html

I ordered the book recently for my DBF and plan to read it when it comes:) I'm just thrilled he's getting interested in low-carb (even if it isn't Atkins!:p) He was told his cholesterol was high just before Christmas and he's totally changed his eating habits (he couldn't give up bread but, eats ezekiel bread:)) and has lost over 30 lbs in less than 2 months:D I'm SO proud of him!:carrot:

He became interested in Protein Power because he saw their cooking show on PBS "LowcarbfoodwoRX". Aud, you might want to see if you can get this on tv in your area. He said the recipes are awesome!

First there was "progress" in the strike talks - now back to "no progress" . . . I'm opting for the "no progress" right now :p . . . so much info I want to absorb! Tx for the link JG . . . haven't watched PBS inlike forEVAH (I'm thinking since Teletubbies??) . . . not sure why . . . will check the directory. Right now I'm keeping it simple but dh & I both love to cook.

Waz ezekial bread?:?:

Haven't heard specifically of this term "Golden Shot", but from personal experience (as I've done Atkins in the past)...I can definately tell you that when I start it over again, I definately lose the weight/fat much slower. What does the Protein Power thread have to say about "Carb Cycling" or "Zig Zag" dieting...I've checked around many places...and this seems to be the ticket to breaking stalls. I'm currently into a stall (also TOM) so I'm one big bloated mess! Tomorrow is my "UP or HIGH CARB" day...

In the Burn the Fat book it generally promotes restricted carbs, but not as restricted as in Atkins and the theory is this...when you restrict Carbs to severely low levels, you, in fact, by default are restricting calories (appetite suppressant qualities of low-carb as well as thermogenic effect of high protein). You are probably causing your body to go into severe caloric restriction and after a while, your weight loss slows and slows until BAM...your in the tailspin of a big fat gigantic STALL! Why..you may ask??? It is because your (super duper smart) metabolism has slowed down to accomodate the decrease in calories and/or body fat. That is where the Carb Cycling comes in. When you carb-cycle, you continue to eat moderate carb percentage (more like what the Protein Power program advises) for 3 days which is about 90-120g carbs per day and then on the 4th day you double your carb intake (carbs from whole foods a.k.a. brown rice, yams, nuts, legumes, lentils, etc.) and then on 5th day you start the cylcle over again.

I think this just makes sense...ya know...to trick the body...and may also explain why your body will not respond the same on Atkins the second time around. What do you think about this??

Tx for the Ezekial link soulb . . . one more question & I'll quit being a Thread Hog & catch up . . . when you have time to fry the tofu - what do you fry it with? Coconut oil?:?:

Tx!

petra65 03-20-2008 02:10 AM

Bambi-there are some interesting conversations on that board. That's for sure. There are several people who have been talking about and a few who are carb cycling like you. I think there has even been some discussion of that book you are reading as well as Good Calories, Bad Calories. Then there are others who do intermittent fasting. It probably has the same effect metabolically. Too complicated for me personally.

I empathisize with you all wanting your old friends back. I'm going through the same thing with the protein power board. When I used that board last time about 2 years ago-first it was actually a different website, but it was also a different place with many different people than are there now. I'm missing what used to be there and having a hard time adjusting to the changes.

Yes, it's my favorite oil for frying. It gives it a great flavor and texture. I like to add an acid (lemon juice, vinegar) and salt/pepper to it before serving.

Petra - I'm not one to look back...but forward. I hope that all the "old friends" of this board are doing well and getting and/or maintaining healthy happy lives, but am always glad to share with new people just the same!:carrot: I, for one, am glad that you are here (and we haven't totally lost you to the Protein Power boards!;)) I appreciate your views as a doctor/person/psych and I'm sure many of us here will agree that we are fortunate to have someone here with your experience (and culinary skills!:D) I also post on bodybuilding dot com forum and gain alot of info there but I still come back here to my buds who are just KOOOL! Sometimes even sharing new info I find other places. This is a great support forum! Please do not take this the wrong way, as I know you work in the psych field, but I found this quote in Burn the Fat book and thought it might be encouraging to you as well as others:

Like the soil, your subconscious mind is totally impartial – it doesn’t discriminate. In it will grow whatever seeds you plant there or allow to be planted there. Many people have perfectly good intentions, but they unwittingly allow their subconscious to work against themselves by focusing on what they don't want. And, as metaphysical writer Louise Hay reminds us, “The more you dwell on what you don’t want, the more of it you
create.” Others simply pay no attention to their thoughts whatsoever, and like a garden that’s neglected, soon enough, weeds start growing. Eventually, the weeds take over your garden. Here are a few examples of negative statements and self-defeating questions:
Negative statements and self-defeating questions
I can’t lose weight no matter what I do.
Why can't I lose this last ten pounds?
Why is it so hard for me to lose weight?
I have a slow metabolism.
Why can everyone else lose weight except me? It’s not fair.
It’s not my fault because I don’t have good genetics.
I don't want to be fat anymore.
I wish I could get rid of this gut.
It’ll never work because I like food too much.
I don’t have the willpower to get lean.
I would work out but I don’t have time.
I just can’t get myself up that early to work out.
I hate being fat.
I’ll never see my abs.
I hate cardio.
I can’t.
I’ll try.

Positive statements and empowering questions
How can I lose fat and enjoy the process?
What can I do today that will help me get closer to my weight loss goal?
What can I eat right now at this meal that will help me lose body fat?
How great am I going to feel after I finish my workout today?
My metabolism is getting faster every day.
I am getting leaner every day.
I like the way I look.
I am 100% responsible for my results.
Whatever it takes, I’ll do it.
I like eating healthy foods.
I love working out.
Training early in the morning is exhilarating.
I have time for anything I am committed to.
I like myself.
I can do it.
I’ll do it

Joyce-I hope I didn't give you the impression I was being negative about this. I'm not. I am accepting it might be harder this time but certainly not giving up.

I'm sure you don't watch this show but some others here probably do and you might want to check it out. I'm a big Dog Whisperer fan. he's on National Geographic on Friday nights. He's a big believer in creating your own reality and living in the moment. One of the many blessings that dogs bring to our lives that we can apply to many other areas.

Good morn all!

Petra - Glad to hear that you are going to hang in there! I just know how frustrating it can be to hit a stall...

Well folks, today is my UP day...which means HIGH CARBs for me!! Yeahhhh! I hope this sh*t works....how awesome would that be! To eat low-carb for 3 days and then carb up with rice, potato, fruits, beans...all that good stuff for an entire day and drop 2lbs a week! I really hope that I'm eating enough calories on my low-carb days and that I consume enough calories on my high-carbs days so that this system will work. It is somewhat "trial and error" since everyone's metabolism is different. Let's see...for breakfast, I had my regular cup of cottage cheese, and I'm having a bowl of oatmeal w/fresh blueberries. I will be having yams, black-eyed peas (lots), steak, fish, collard greens, salad, blue cheese dressing, and tons of fruit today! Woooo hooo! This better not back-fire on me! I'm still so friggin bloated, I feel like the goodyear blimp! Hope everyone's having a fun day! Joyce

JG-about the cholesterol thing. Most people seem to have some benefit in their lipids on their program. I'm certainly hoping for that effect as well as my blood pressure. Mine were borderline high last time I had them checked and I'm trying to avoid meds. They believe that in general, the whole idea of lowering cholesterol has been overblown by the mainstream medical community and they may have a point but like I said, most people seem to get some benefit from their program. I think they talk about this in some detail in the book. Did you get the original or Protein Power Lifeplan? Unfortunately, my experience with emailing Dr. Mike is that he isn't receptive to that. There is some medical information on the site but to be honest if you posted a question there I would most likely be the person to answer your question since I think I'm the only doctor who currently frequents the site. You might get a few other people who could tell you what their personal experience has been with cholesterol issues.

Amen Petra!!:cp: A lot of people are totally ignorant when it comes to food addictions. The first time I read DANDR (Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution), what stood out for me was "Your "just this one taste won't hurt" rationalization is the kiss of death". Truer words have never been spoken! For me, (and others with food addictions) 1 taste leads to 1 more taste and before you know it the downward spiral begins. Reminds me of a comment my clueless SIL, who happens to be doing WW, made to me on Christmas. The table was full of desserts....cheesecake, pies, cookies, italian pastries....I choose not to induldge in desserts & after being on Atkins nearly 4 years, I really wish people would just respect that fact (especially family...who, unfortunately can be the worst one's!!) She proceeded to ask what I'd like and I said "nothing thanks...I'll just have a cup of tea". This lead to her saying to me "you shouldn't deprive yourself...blah...blah...blah" I finally just said "I don't eat sugar" which, left her sitting there looking like a deer in headlights. She simply doesn't get it.

Since DBF was so impressed with the LowcarbwoRX show...I immediately ordered him both the original PP book as well as the PP Life Plan:) I'm anxious to read them both myself as well:)

I've read so much about cholesterol and completely agree with Dr. Mike....the medical community has completely overblown that entire issue! After many discussions, DBF does not want to take statin drugs and has become quite interested in a lower carb lifestyle:D While he isn't quite ready for Atkins...he's already changed his eating habits & has lost over 30 lbs in less than 2 months!:D I couldn't be prouder of him!

As far as your blood pressure goes Petra, you CAN avoid the meds...I did. A Dr. wanted me on bp meds when I was 26 years old. I refused and began seeing a chiropractor for chiropractic adjustments which controlled my bp without medication. Being on Atkins nearly 4 years & losing over 100 lbs, along with exercising has kept my bp where it should be:)
