there's a recipe for homemade seitan on the protein power site. I was wondering if you could buy it commercially or if everyone made it from scratch. It looks labor intensive.

When using wheat gluten, it's actually really easy! This is one of the easier recipes. I make it similarly but add more spice and herbs to it. http://www.theppk.com/recipes/dbreci...p?RecipeID=112

I just booked massages on Saturday for DH and I. :) We have gift certificates and so it's an indulgence we can afford  I am so looking forward to it!

I WILL! ;)

I just made dinner...Fried cabbage, red onions, garlic, herbs, spices, sesame seeds, Red Hot, extra virgin coconut oil and tofu (I found one that is really low carb! Less than 1 gram per serving! http://www.sandiegosoydairy.com/why_tofu.html ) .

It was so good! I still can have unsweetened almond milk and chocolate if I want it later. ;)

AAAH HAAA! NOW THERE'S THE TOFU RECIPE I WAS LOOKIN FOR!!!:carrot:
I've been wanting to do something with that damn tofu (hope it's still good...been in frig for 2 1/2 weeks;) ) Also need to get rid of a head of cabbage I bought 2 wks...surprisingly still good!

Hey SoulB - When my sis was doing the Vegan lifestyle thingy...she used to go away to like some "retreat" that was remotely located in the woods of New York (upstate somewhere)...she took pics and showed me (she actually wanted me to buy the property, cuz I'm a Real Estate Investor and all)....anyways...it did look quite beautiful (scenery) and tranquil. Do you go to places like that where other Vegans meet for like the weekend???

BTW, my sis loves to start things...never to finish. When she was into it, she was into it...but with a family like mine...we were not the most (how should I say) easily pursuaded and pretty raw (no holes barred) and pretty much laughed at her like...what kinda crap r u into now??? or like waiving chicken legs and collard greens loaded with smoke pork, etc...in her face at family bbq's...ya know...teasing her...cuz nobody was taking her seriously! She did good on it for a while and sounded very much like you...but then (like everything she starts), fell away from it. I know...I know...your probably thinking, "oh...how cruel", but if you knew my sis...you'd understand. My whole family is like that...we are very frank and honest about our feelings (without the benefit of tact sometimes)!;)

Oaky, now I want collard greens with smoked tempeh bacon for dinner tomorrow! ;) I actually have people tease me like that all the time, I'm used to it. :D I am the "odd" one too, the one who always follows fringe interests, is the youngish "hippie" in my family.

Was it the Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY? It's not a vegan only place, but it's a wonderful retreat center that has classes of all sorts (I work there in the Summers!) and they have wonderful food that is often vegetarian, always has vegan options and occasionally has fish and free range chicken.

Ooohhh Rhinebeck, NY...I used to be a vendor at the fair in Rhinebeck (the big one they have there over the summer).

Honestly, my sis can be a little nuts sometimes!:dizzy: The way she talked about Veganism...I thought it was a cult! I would say, "oookkkaaayyy...so you don't want to eat meat...gooooood!", and she would go on rambling about it's not just food, it's the earth and the birds, and trees...and then shortly after, she (at age 45!) takes a trip to Mexico (girl probably behind in her rent) and jumps off a friggin cliff (bungy jumpin')!:dizzy: So...she kinda put a bad stigma in my mind about it...but I am an open person and as I said before, I am always open to truth and logic...I listen...absorb...and then decide if something's right for me! But the way she went on and on about it...you should join...join...join...I thought it was something like L Ron Hubbard...she seriously was kinda acting like Tom Cruise in that weird interview on the david letterman show! Gotta love her though...well, you don't, but I DO!;)

 Oh, she sounds like a HOOT!!! I love both her and your spirit!

I would LOVE to own property (anywhere, really!) especially in New York and here in San Diego. I just gotta keep plugging along to make it happen!

petra65 03-18-2008 10:06 PM

I love to cook with coconut oil. I got some at the health food store this past weekend.

SoulBliss 03-18-2008 10:09 PM

It is my favorite oil for cooking, hands down. A little goes a long way too! It makes veggies taste sweet and caramelized sooner. My DH and I ate an entire head of cabbage tonight! :o It was not huge, but still  It's easy to eat lots of veggies when they are cooked right and seasoned well.

I would LOVE to be in California right NOW!!!:carrot: Thanks CALI for sending us poor folk those good a$$ oranges!! tee hee!

BTW, I wouldn't buy ANYTHING for some time yet in Cali...markets well below (more than 1/2 in many cases)...as a Mortgage Broker...I can tell you that we have not seen the bottom yet! Keep renting...keep your credit up...or work to get it up...and just wait...I don't think things will be getting better anytime soon as we've not seen the bottom yet!;)

Well I made it thru day one of induction. I am feeling really proud of myself. I just have to keep it up. Ok I am off to watch will and grace.

Hi All! Still a steady downpour here in MO . . . flash floods in outlying areas . . . a true soaking rain and more predicted for tomorrow . . . DID enjoy walking Ginger in the warmer rain this afternoon . . . just get lost in my audiobook & like being outside in most weather. I'm listening to Jackie Collins - Hollywood Wives II - escape-fare.:) I like her voice & pronunciations for some reason too. Hypnotizing.

Mmmmm, fried cabbage . . . think my OTHER Gran used to fry cabbage with onion soulb - when do you add the tofu? I'm about mid-way thru Outsmarting the Midlife Fat Cell and think so far it could be summed up in one word: SOY I'm not to the Nut Stage of Atkins so gotta work it in some other ways . . . tx for lc tofu link!

Checked out a lot of recipes @ Protein Power - have bookmarked . . . going back to read about what the program actually is . . . I wasn't thinking early 90's petra . . . I'm thinking something from the 70's - not sure what tho'!:p

Ahhhh bambi . . . fried baloney memories . . . my now 30 & 40 yr old nieces & nephs used to think I was a magician when I would make my specialty Magic Baloney . . . gathered round to watch it suddenly puff in the skillet! (I like mine burnt with mustard)

Had a GREAT work out at the Y . . . the Pool was closed 'cause lightning was too close so spent that time in the sauna . . . feeling detoxed as a result.

Gotta go pick dd21Molly up at work @ 11pm - QUACKing on outta here . . . :p

petra65 03-18-2008 11:58 PM

Soulbliss-I'm assuming if they sell seitan at my local healthfood store, it will be in the refrigerated section. Is that correct? I'm not really a tofu fan but I would be willing to give this a try.

Hey there, ILoveMike! Great start - and that's a stunning photo!

I definitely sympathise with the whole starting-a-new-routine thing - this week I've started the Couch-2-5k plan, in the hopes of turning myself from a couch potato into a runner within 3 months. For me, who's ALWAYS felt terribly crap about my capacity to succeed with any kind of exercise, this is A Big Thing. But we'll both damn well keep on keepin' on!
