  • Hey Everyone,

I'm new to these forums and to the Atkins diet. I am on 11th day into the diet. It seem to have been working great, I lost 9 lbs the first 7 days. BUT this morning i wake up to a 2 lb weight gain. I don't understand. Is it normal to change like this? I really wanna stay on Atkins.

If you have any tips or advice for me I would love to here it =)

    Thanks

    Jemmy =)
  • Hi & Welcome jemmy!

Are you wighing every day? If so, I'd cut back to just once a week. Fluctuations happen.

Lots of advice & experiences & talk in our weekly LC Chat - read along or just jump on in with questions: http://www.3fatchicks.com/forum/showthread.php?t=135309
  • Jemmy!!

You've come to a great place for advice, support & encouragement.

Believe it or not, yes...fluctuations aren't uncommon...discouraging but not uncommon. Don't let it discourage you, stick with it and be sure you are drinking plenty of water!

    All the best to you!!!

    Kim
  • Welcome Jemmy!!! Hope to see you on our week LC chat! You'll learn lots...get some laughs...and lots and lots of support! Joyce
  • Welcome Jenny. I'm new to this forum but not to low carb. Fluctuations are very common-especially around TOM.
  • Fisrt, welcome and I wish you a successful joruney. Second, have you read Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution? Make sure that you either buy the book or get it from your library and read it.

The scale is just a tool. It is your barometer. It is up to you how often you weight. I weight everyday but I don't obsess about the number. I write it down. If there are a few days without change, I look at my foods to see if there is something that I am doing or have added recently, that would cause a fluctuation.

If you were on point with your eating and there were no cheats, the fluctuations are okay. Like JerseyGyrl says, discouraging but not uncommon. Also, your body processes different foods differently. You may have some food sensitivities, especially to lactose, that can cause your digstive system to grind to a halt. This is the perfect way to discover this. Have you been eating more cheese than you used to?

Usually, if you stick to the plan, within a few days to a week the scale will drop about 3-4 pounds. Don't worry about it.

    Good luck.
  • Welcome aboard!

Chiming in to agree with other folks' experiences - don't be disheartened about day-to-day fluctuation, because that's totally normal whether you're actively dieting or just eating in a no-plan kind of way; one's weight DOES fluctuate a little, on the basis of how it's processing particular stuff, and how much water you've had, and all kinds of stuff.

I realise it's hard NOT to concentrate on the day-to-day stuff when you're on Day 11, but I'd encourage a more Big Picture approach. I do tend to hop on the scales most mornings, but I only count the one on my official weigh-in day - ie what I weigh first thing on Monday morning. I wish I could bring myself to make it a monthly thing, but that's too hard!

Something I'm finding very helpful with visualising the Big Picture is making a bar chart, and colouring in my weight every week. I know that Fitday and the Tickerfactory Ticker also provide computerised versions, but I've made my own, and pencilled in lines to show where my weight WILL be if I lose just 1lb per week. And another to show where it will be if I manage 2lb per week. These are such modest goals, but you can still SEE the tangible progress right there on the board, waiting for you so long as you stick to the plan. And it's really exciting and confidence-boosting! And of course it's especially cheering since I'm setting modest goals that I hope I can beat, at least some of the time!

Sorry, I'm rambling, rather. To return to the point - generally one does manage to shift quite a bit of weight in Week One of Atkins, especially if blessed with a good metabolism. But a lot of that weight is water - hardly any of it is actually fat. The great thing about Dr Atkins' plan is that it does shift the way your metabolism works so that it becomes a machine for burning stored fat, and over time this works wonders - as there are plenty of successful dieters to show! (Check out the Goal Story threads!) But, yes, it's entirely likely that you'll find yourself with day-to-day fluctuations. I don' t know of any weightloss plan that DOESN'T have this issue. Don't let it get you down! Just keep on keeping on, and before you know it you'll find your clothes are falling off and you need to buy smaller ones!
  • Wow, you are all so great. I like this place already =)

I will keep reading the forums as much as possible. I have 3 young kids to keep up with also. And yes I got the Atkins book and also reading info on the atkins web site.

A quick question, How bad is salting your food on atkins?

    Thanks again

    Jemmy,

The Atkins book is great...as long as its the 2002 and prior versions. The Atkins website isn't great. If you've been reading over there, you've probably already noticed a lot of contradictions. You'll be much better off sticking to what you've read in the book

As for salting food....well....too much sodium can cause you to retain water which isn't a good thing when you're trying to drop the pounds.

Drinking a lot of water is highly recommended on Atkins to flush the by products of ketosis out of your system.

  • Not bad at all Shadow...Remember, Atkins diet in itself has a natural diuretic effect (which means you won't hold excess fluids)...As long as you are getting in at least 8 glasses of water per day...you should not have any problem with salt! I've never...and I have a heavy hand in the salt dept! Hope this helps. Joyce
  • Well... My biggest problem on Atkins is drinking that much water. I have never been a water drinker and its so hard to get into. The most I have a day is 4 glasses so far. Some thing I really need to work on.

I Love my coffee that I sugar with splenda and I drink diet crush that is also sugared with splenda. Before I started Atkins I was a heavy Pepsi drinker. But I'm not craving it.

Did I mention I love this site =) You are all so great!
  • Boy Shadow...you sound just like me!!!! Before 1/5/08 (when I started Atkins)...I completely and literally lived on diet pepsi! I drank noooo water at all! I, like you...have always hated water (in my adult life). So when I tell you it's possible..girl...it's possible! I now drink almost a gal/day! What changed...you may ask? Well, I started slow...first, I cut back on my diet pepsi addiction from 8 2-liters per week to 2 2-liters/week. I bought bottled water and would count the bottles I drink every day...the first week, I was doing great if I could finish 4 bottles that day! I also started drinking herbal tea. As I too am a coffee lover (used to drink 8 cups/day)...I cut back on this too...only drinking 2-3 cups a day. After the first two weeks...started liking water again...so I gradually increased my water as I cut back on other liquids like coffee and soda. The final kicker was after wk 2 when I decided to workout! I started taking supplements which require alot of water or else you could run into kidney problems, etc. Sounds crazy...but this is just what I needed to force me into drinking more water!!! I knew if I took these pills and didn't drink enough water...I could be in alot of pain. Also, when I started working out...my body just craves more water and soda/coffee just won't satisfy me like water will. I'm still staying focused on my water consumption as a way of life, but I can tell ya...it will take a conscious effort...some dedication...but you can do it!! BTW, when my water consumption grew...the weight really flew off and my skin got really nice! Joyce

  • Jemmy,

You mentioned you had a 2 lb gain which got me to thinking about something when I read your last post. How much coffee, Splenda & diet Crush soda would you say you consume in a day?
  • I have about 5 coffee's (with two teaspoons of splenda per coffee) and about 3-4 diet crush.

What I realized was I was not following the pyramid after about a week of being on atkins. I may have gotten to comfortable and I was not having as much meat and I was having the little snack bars from atkins and the shakes. So for the past 2 days I consumed more meats then any other food and added my carbs to that again and I seem to be back on track.

Today I am going to see how many bottles of water I can fit in. I'm going to work hard at that.

How realistic is it to have a goal of being at least 200lbs by mid may?

    Jemmy,

I don't mean this rudely....but, have you read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution? I can't stress enough how important it is to read the book for a complete understanding of how & why following the Atkins lifestyle correctly is essential to this plan working for you. I also recommend reading Gary Taubes Good Calories, Bad Calories.

I know this isn't what you are going to want to hear....but....try to cut back on the coffee. Caffeine causes blood sugar spikes and may be affecting your weight loss. If you are using 2 teaspoons Splenda per cup of coffee...that is 10 teaspoons Splenda per day! On Atkins, artificial sweeteners are limited to 3 packets per day. I'd seriously try to get away from the diet crush as well.

You also mentioned Atkins bars & shakes. The shakes, in my opinion....are OK...but, the bars are a no-no. I know the label on the bars claim "appropriate for Induction"....however, with ingredients like soy, milk & peanuts...none of which appear on the acceptable foods list....its obvious to see these are not "appropriate for Induction". Not to mention, if you've tried to figure out Atkins math....the net carbs just do not add up. The label claims they contain no sugar alcohols...but....they deduct Glycerine, which incidentally, IS a SUGAR ALCOHOL...and thats how they calculate the 2 or 3 net carbs per bar.

I'd say your goal by May is certainly possible provided you follow the plan closely
