Okay. I'm trying to figure rice out. How can one cup have so many calories? It's supposed to be good for you but it's got nearly 700 calories in one cup? How is that even possible? And if the calorie counter says "uncooked" is 1/4 cup, how much is that cooked? Seriously, I've never been a huge rice eater but being broke makes you buy long term sustainables and rice seemed better than ramen. I hate even the thought of Ramen knowing the sodium levels and even though my blood pressure seems to be coming down a little, it's still in the pre-hypertension stage. And how can a 1/4 cup uncooked and cooked be the same amount of calories? Is caloriecount.about.com screwed up?
When I googled your question, it appears that 1 cup of uncooked rice yeilds about double cooked. So if you cook 1 cup of rice, your serving is actually 2 cups. (1/4 cup = 1/2 cup) - But I would do more research just to be safe - or someone on here might have a better answer.
I will only use the brown rice in a bag. That way each bag is it's own serving - and it's A LOT of rice, so you could use half now and half later if you are conserving calories. It can be high in calories, but brown rice has better nutrients for you. The brown rice in a bag, is quick & easy! You can add some red or black beans for more fiber & some blackened chicken for some protien, or add some tomato's & green chiles with chicken. I do a lot with my brown rice - it is extremely filling.
I bought the Jasmine because it is what everyone here seems to like. I may try the brown rice since we have a cooker and it's pretty easy not to screw it up.

I think previous posters have answered the calorie question for you. But the above caught my attention. Sounds like you've gotten another lesson in the fact that "good for you" doesn't always equal low calorie (olive oil, avocado, nut butters, whole grains, etc.).
I've definitely learned this lesson the wrong way myself in the past. Oatmeal, anyone?
I eat just the rice, nothing else sometimes except maybe some veggies, so a cup is what I need for it to be a meal. There's just not all that much food in the house and no one here to drive to the store.
Thanks for the info. I really was just beyond words thinking I'd consumed 600 calories in one item of one meal.

I had that problem with rice and pasta in the beginning as well. I thought I was going to starve when I weighed a cooked serving of pasta. I didn't realize the box was giving me the uncooked weight. I ended up cooking one dry serving then weighing the cooked amount to see how much a cooked serving weighed. In my experience, one 1/4 serving of dry makes almost exactly 3/4 cup of cooked rice for about 150 calories
yes, the key to rice it so factor in the water. To cook one cup of rice, you use 2 cups of water. Total yield is 3 cups of rice or 6 servings at approx 100 calories per half cup. When I do a stirfry I now use 1 cup of rice and about 3 cups of my veggie mix. Works out to be about 325 calories for a HUGE bowl of food that I adore. Rice is one of my best friends.

I did find out that it's because of the way the rice steams in the cooker so it loses less of the original water. I'm just sticking with an estimate of 300 per cup since I add some butter and salt.
I want to try stir fry today, as in fried rice, but we'll have to see. I'm a little intimidated but I need the protein from the eggs. I'm getting lax in my protein intake.
1 cup of cooked basmati rice has 205 calories according to the daily plate but I have seen anywhere from 160 to 210. I just figure a half cup is 100-ish calories.

Don't be afraid of the stir fry, but bear in mind, you don't have to use oil. I usually don't unless I am behind in my calories, then I use a teaspoon or so of sesame oil. It goes great with chinese type stuff. A bit of extra liquid (nonfat chicken stock or something similiar), and a good nonstick pan and you can have a stir fry. You can also use a bit of the nonstick spray. Stir fry doenst have to mean oil. And honestly,( and this is coming from one who rarely uses the "you cant tell the difference" when it comes to low calsubstitutes) it really isnt a necessary component.
Success has brown rice (and other rices) in 1 serving, pre-measured cups that are cooked. Nutrition information is on the package-- no guess work or measuring! All you have to do is microwave!
I love marinating chicken in teryaki sauce and then stirring some soy sauce into my rice, making some asian veggies, and making chicken stir fry with it.
I wouldn't bother calculating the calories in raw rice unless you planned on eating it that way!!
Knowing the calories in raw rice is helpful when you're measuring out a portion to cook for yourself. I find it more convenient to measure raw rice than cooked rice.
