I find that when I am in similar situations... I make sure to grab an apple at the grocery to eat - sometimes, even when I am on my way home to make dinner - the fiber fills me up and there is enough time in between the apple and dinner for my body to register food intake.

It'd be a great place to start, at least. Another thing would be sure to add weight training, as you'll tone and firm your body, build muscle mass, and boost your metabolism, all without radical food restrictions. Just remember, some days you'll eat more, some less - it balances itself out in the end. Some people have even had great success with calorie cycling; one day you eat 1400, the next 1800, and so on.
