Why does red meat get such a bad rap?

Photochick is correct that dietary cholesterol is not the bad guy they thought, but saturated fat is. If you are concerned about heart health saturated fats are what you need to limit (all animal products, unless fat free, contain saturated fat as well as a few plant sources.)
This is a very interesting 3 part article on saturated fat

  • I believe in alot of what others have had to say on this post.

shy - your daughters t-shirt is funny, my hubby says that all the time. and like you said i think every1 should respect each others eating choices (meatetarians vs vegetarians).

For our family we have cut alot of our red meat out too, due to the calories and fat content for the most part. Instead of ground hamburger we use ground turkey. (in fact, we have switched our bacon to turkey bacon and sausage too). We even eat Turkey Burgers rather than beef. One day i stopped bby the store to pick up some ground turkey for Tacos and they did not have any so i went ahead and used the lean ground beef and when i was cooking it i got sick from the smell. I thought that was wild since i used to cook with it all the time. We eat more chicken than anything especially skinless boneless chicken breast. There are just so many ways to cook it. If we do eat red meat it is usually a sirloin (less marbling).

We do a lot of 1/2 and 1/2 - 1/2 lb of ground beef and 1/2 lb of ground turkey mixed together. I also buy the VERY lean ground beef (like the 97% lean). I know it's a bit drier and a lot more expensive than ground chuck, but I can't deal with the greasiness from the higher fat ground meats.

I've found that in most things, you really can't taste the difference if you mix 1/2 and 1/2. Chili, hamburgers, casseroles, etc. ... still taste just fine!

That is a great idea. I buy lean ground chicken but I am not fond of the texture of it when it is cooked up. I also buy extra lean ground beef.
When I purchase them I will simply half each package and freeze them together so later when I need some I can pull a mixed pound out of my freezer.
    Awesome idea!
  • I heard of alot of people doing that 1/2 and 1/2. My family actually really likes the ground turkey better than the ground beef so it was easy for us to switch. My oldest son even makes sure it is turkey bacon he only eats anywhere. he gets upset when they do not have it at a resturant. But i think it is a very good i dea to at least mix it if the texture or taste is not easy for you to handle.
  • I really like beefalo. We only eat local meat, so that has made us expand our horizons as far as options go. There is a local farmer who raises beefalo. They are grass fed, and the meat is lean, but still juicy - and has a great flavor. We just had some burgers with it last night.

Ground turkey is okay, but I just like the flavor of beef better
  • I read an article today that said steak actually helps you lose weight. Not something you'd want to eat daily. But maybe a couple times a week.
