So I fell off of the calorie counting and I'm wanting to get back on. I started counting again yesterday and did great but gained a pound! I know its not going to fall off by itself but why the gain?
Also I stopped drinking soda and switched to sweet tea, is that just as bad? I make a gallon of tea and add 1 cup of sugar.
Nutrition wise-sweet tea is better than soda, but calorie wise, yes, it is just as bad. Are you counting the calories in your sweet tea that you are drinking? If not, you need to do so. All calories count-which is why I drink my tea unsweetened, and use Splenda in my coffee.
Honestly, I recommend that you make your tea unsweetened, and then add a Splenda packet to each individual glass, if you cannot stand to drink your tea unsweetened.
Also, you said that you got back on the wagon for one day, and gained a pound? Don't weigh in daily. Weigh in only once or twice per week. You also need to be sure that you are counting your calories properly.

Aphil is right, it's probably pretty high in calories, but if that helps you get off soda, and that's what you can do right now, I'd say to stick with it until you get past the soda addiction.
Later on, you could try cutting the sugar back a little at a time, like 3/4 cup, and do that for a while, then 1/2 cup, and so on. Personally, I still drink my hot tea with sugar, it's just one thing I'm not ready to give up yet, but I've been slowly cutting the sugar down as I'm able. Laying off sweet things like candy bars and sodas, I've noticed that my tea started tasting too sweet, I guess because I wasn't used to all the sugar in other things. That's when I cut it down. I don't know if it will work the same way for you, but I bet it will.
I think, the plan you can stick to is better than the plan that's so frustrating you can't stick with it for the long run. You're making changes for life, forever, here, so if some of those changes require smaller steps to get there, I think that's just what you have to do, and there's no shame or harm in that.
Good for you, for giving up soda! I gave them up a few months ago, too, and am glad for it. I really don't miss them! Good luck with your goals!
Thank you so much for the suggestions. I did drink sweet tea yesterday but not nearly as much as I usually do Now I'm wondering if I should just drink my soda since it doesn't have calories in it? lol
I was upset about gaining a pound but it looks like I lost today (yes I weighed myself again) I'm going to have my husband hide the scale now and I'll weigh in on Sunday Thanks again
Good for you, for giving up soda! That's great. Like was said, though, sweet tea isn't TOO good either But, it also depends on how much you drink (i.e. one glass? 5 glasses?). I absolutely refuse to use calories on liquids. I just like my food too much! I do, however, use a full fat-full sugar creamer (coconut or vanilla) in my coffee each morning. I measure it, and factor it into my day.. but that's 70 calories, and not the 130-150 that a sugared drink might have.
As for the gain- how many calories did you consume? Did you have a high sodium day, maybe? Not drink enough water? All of those things can put on a bit. And, weight can just bounce all over/flucuate- that's very, very normal. I can have a PERFECTLY on-plan day, with exercise and plenty of water.. calories right on.. and gain a bit the next day! If we lost weight EVERY day, we would be at our goals with a snap of the fingers It's the week-to-week that matters, not day-to-day.
This is my first week getting back on track, also. So far so good. I've been a member of this forum for a long time. The past few months I've been totally off my weight-loss and fitness plan. I got on the scale the other day and was SHOCKED!!
So far I have lost 5lbs this week. I tend to lose a lot the first week. I'm keeping my calories between 1500-2000 and it's working great.
I thought this would be a good place to jump back in and start posting.
Im almost embarrased to ask this - but - if sweet tea is not any beter then soda, any idea how many calories are in a slushie from sonic???? I never drink soda, or sweet tea and rarely drink juice, its black coffee for me, but recently was introduced to orange slushies from sonic and OMG Im addicted
A 12 oz. orange slush is 170 calories. Just checked for you!! I have never had one, but it sure sounds good. I think I need to stick with my 0 calorie diet sodas or water.
Water is the best. I switched from soda to water, and it first it was hard - I was a MAJOR diet coke addict. But after a while, I honestly have a hard time drinking soda now. It tastes so sweet and makes my teeth feel sticky. And I LOVE water now. I try to drink 8 glasses a day, and I just feel better overall.
It was definitely hard at first to switch, but if you stick with it, you'll make a great habit for life!
ok, so I have compromised, black coffee in the moring, water the rest of the day and if I absolutly need a sweet treat - a small oragne slushie!!! (hey its a start!!!)
