Question Water: bit by bit vs. in bulk...does it matter?

I tend to drink 8 of my 8 - 10 glasses a day in 2-glasses-at-a-time spurts, for several reasons. Mostly, because it's the easiest way I've found for myself to make sure I get all my water in.

By doing this, I drink most of my water by 2 PM, with only one or two glasses being taken in after supper. I'm wondering if it makes a difference to my system, though, if I'm getting all the needed benefits of my water.

Does anyone know?

Well, I drink large amounts at a time too sometimes. I think that it's okay to do it as you are, if you are feeling fine. Some people do it as you do so as to not have to wake in the night to urinate. As long as you aren't drinking HUGE amounts at one time, and are getting enough overall, have no kidney condition and so on, it seems like it should be fine!

You're both on the right track of why I do it this way...it saves wear and tear on the path to the bathroom!

I drink 2 glasses at once, then once that works it's way through my system, I drink another 2 glasses, and so on. Once I'm done my 8 glasses, I refill my glass (16 oz cup) and cart it along with me from my office to the kitchen to the LR...I usually get through at least another 8oz. Only occasionally do I get through all 16 oz by bedtime, tho'

Apart from 2 coffees first thing in the morning, and maybe 4 oz of white wine at/with dinner, I don't usually drink anything but water. No sodas, juice, tea, etc. Very rarely, I will have an herbal tea (no caffeine)

I was just wondering if it's as beneficial to my system being ingested in this way...I'm always so darn curious about everything.

Well, I realize at the end of the day that I have had almost no water so I drink about 4 cups before going to bed. Yup, I do go in the night. It is my goal to change this.

I wouldn't conisder 2 glasses at a time to be "bulk." If you were trying to drink 8+ glasses all at once, then we'd be having a different discussion, but the way you're doing it is fine

I keep a 1-liter bottle on my desk and sip throughout the day. By the end of my 8-hour work day, I've usually gone through about 3 liters

I was actually wondering something similar today. It's really hot in my house (we have no air conditioning when I'm away at school ) so this last little while I've found myself drinking around 4-6 glasses consecutively when I come home from the gym early afternoon (I always drink at least a bottle at the gym but I only take little sips occasionally instead of pounding a bottle in a few minutes). Besides it making me feel a little blahhh for an hour or two, is there anything really wrong with that?

I remember being told (perhaps in science class?) at one point that the stomach can only absorb a cup of water per half hour, or something along those lines, and so drinking large quantities at once causes it to essentially pass straight through the system to be urinated out, rather than being absorbed into the body and processed first. That said, when I tried to verify that on google just now, I couldn't find any information one way or the other - perhaps using the wrong search cues. It makes sense, although whether there would be a noticeable difference in your situation isn't clear. Any doctors want to weigh in?

Well I try to sip on water all throughout the day, but I will admit that I to tend to drink in "gulps" and finish a glass quickly.

I don't think 2 cups at a time is necessarily "in bulk" as someone else said.

Although it is not the stomach that absorbs water, improbable is on the right track in that the body can only absorb so much at a time. Thus, for BEST hydration it is ideal to sip throughout the day, but unless there are underlying issues the way you are doing it is perfectly fine, though some does pass right through. Huge amounts at once can mess with the electrolytes in ones system, so that is not a good thing, but a couple glasses at once is not enough for this to be a concern.

I wouldn't worry about it unless it causes you problems.
