1700 isn't necessarily too much - it depends on your age, weight, height, activity level, metabolism, etc. If you're losing at a healthy rate of 1-2 lbs. per week (slightly more if you have a lot to lose, slightly less if you have only a little to lose) than don't worry about what other folks are doing. If you've been at it a few weeks and haven't seen results you may want to re-evaluate.
That said, 3000+ nights could definitely hold you back!
