Default ****ake mushrooms

I've been calorie counting for a long time, so it takes a lot to surprise me. But I just used dried ****ake mushrooms in a recipe. Get this - one serving, which is about 1 1/2 rehydrated mushrooms, is 70 calories. 70!!

Having said that, they are so rich and earthy you don't need much. At the same time, an entire roasted portobello has a similar texture for way fewer calories.

Edit: Haha, the site won't let me spell it correctly! How about "shetake"?

Wow, I wouldn't have guessed they were so calorie-dense!!

BTW, I'm laughing quite loudly at the censored version of the word.

Is that calorie count coming off of the package???

I have sliced shiitake mushrooms and they are 100 calories for 1 oz, which is approx 1 1/2 cups dry.

Yumm...I love shiitake mushrooms. You can do so much with them and with the way they taste they are worth every worth every calorie to me.

Okay, I have the package right here...

"All natural ****ake" (yeah, like that, with the syllable that cannot be named)

Net weight: 1.5 oz

Serving size: 0.1 oz
Servings: 15
Calories: 72

Zenor, I don't know why our info is so different! I wonder if they're the same kind. These are seriously dried. They feel a bit like styrofoam before you soak them.

Anyway, they had a really nice chewy texture and a rich taste. I had 1 1/2 mushrooms with seared tofu and a bit of plum sauce and I thought it was a pretty successful dish. It was worth it - I just have to be cautious as I use the rest of them!

Maybe it's because mine are already sliced. I haven't bought the whole ones in awhile.

Anyway, it doesn't take a lot of them to liven up a dish and they are good for you! The only dried mushroom I like better are morels, but they are pricey unless you go out and forage for them.

Is this another one of those popcorn nutritional info things? I thought shiitake mushrooms were on just about any eating plan.

I'm surprised about the calories in the mushroom!

You didn't say they were off plan. I was just thinking that the poor little mushroom should fit on anyone's plan. Since I'm calorie counting, just as we all are in this forum, that 70 calories runs up the calorie count as opposed to 7.

I'm sorry if I insulted you. I certainly didn't mean to do so.

As you've already mentioned, their flavour is actually so intense that you don't really need too many of them.
I just looked them up on calorie king and its 11 calories per 0.1oz, confusing!!
