Lightbulb Common Atkins Mistakes

Read something on Face Book today, the most common Atkins mistakes.

1. Not understanding the plan.
This most definitely comes under the category of READ THE BOOK BEFORE you begin this plan. By not reading the book and relying on hearsay (from others who have most likely not read the book either) or websites is doing yourself a great injustice. If you want to do this correctly, fully understanding the plan is critical.

2. Not planning ahead.
Failing to plan is planning to fail. It causes you to think "oh just this once won't hurt" and you grab something totally off plan. As Dr. Atkins said it best "Eat nothing that isn't on the Acceptable Foods list and that means absolutely nothing. Your "just this one taste won't hurt" rationalization is the kiss of failure during this phase of Atkins" (regarding Induction).

3. Not counting Net Carbs.
Apart from Atkins 72, which counts total carbs, those following Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution consists of counting net carbs. Net carbs are total carbs minus dietary fiber. In other words if something is 4 total carbs and 2 grams of dietary fiber, you would count it as 2 net carbs.

4. Not eating enough fat.
Butter, heavy cream, full fat mayonnaise, full fat cheese, fattier cuts of meats are all permitted on Atkins. Your fat intake should be 60 -65% per day.

5. Not drinking enough water.
You should be drinking at least 64 ozs. ( 8 eight oz. glasses) of water everyday.

6. Not eating enough vegetables.
Beginning at Induction, 12-15 of your 20 net carbs for the day should be coming from vegetables on the Acceptable Foods list.

These are simple things to be mindful of that may be the cause of Atkins not working for you.

Hi Jersey Girl,

I hope you don't mind me asking so many questions. I LOVE fat but hate fatty cuts of meat, unless it's bacon or sausage (gluten free). Is it ok if I eat lots of fat, but not from meat?

Also how do you really know if you're getting enough? Are those percentages you listed by calories?

Fat doesn't have to come from meat. That being said, there are vegetarians that do Atkins Bacon, sausage, butter, mayo, cheese, eggs, full-fat salad dressings, avocado etc. are all great ways to get your daily fats.

To be sure you are getting enough fat, I would suggest you use something like Fit Day to track everything.

You can drink coffee on Induction provided it doesn't cause any issues with your blood sugar. If your blood sugar spikes, it can cause cravings. That's why it is recommended to avoid it.
