Default Newbie with a question about Hypothyroidism

Hi ya'll, I was gaining weight rapidly despite my healthy eating habits before I was diagnosed as hypothyroid. I now have an extra 20 pounds that I need to lose. I'm taking synthroid now, and my hormone levels have stablized. My question is, if I try to lose this weight on a low-carb diet, will the synthroid have any effect on that? I've noticed it has a sweet taste, and wonder if there is any sugar or other sweetener in it. Thank you very much for any help at all.

Ellis -
Welcome to 3fc!! I also am hypo, and my doctor reccommended South Beach Diet which is not low carb but it is eating the right carbs, and the right fats. I've lost 17 lbs in the last month alone using South Beach and I highly recommend it. As a thyroid patient I started on Atkins but I was still feeling sluggish and tired all the time, since I switched to South Beach I have energy and have been exercising daily. Synthroid will not affect your low carb diet because all that synthroid is, is a synthetic form of the thyroid hormones that your body creates naturally. Remember that People with low thyroid HAVE to work out Exercise is a big key in losing weight for a thyroid patient.
Good Luck

Thank you very much, Michelle... I'll look into the South Beach Diet.. my mom siad it was really good. 17 pounds in a month is fantastic! Good Job! I only have about 20 pounds to lose, so if I happen to do as well as you, that would be awesome.

I am very good about excercising... I actually really enjoy it, always had before i was diagnosed. While my hormones were out of wack, I had trouble running like I was used to, but now I'm right back on track. I even used to work at a gym, so I know the importance.

thanks again! Jill
