Hypo confirmed, other suspected, still no weight gone...

  • Hi All,

I have posted to PCOS boards too...thought I might try for some support here as well. I am diagnosed hypothyroid for 6 years now. Take armour thyro 120 mg. I also am on spironolactone 50mg for about a month. Doc suspects PCOS, Cushings, etc. Since on the Spiro, I have gained about 5 lbs. I also have been really hungry. I had taken Effexor XR 37.5 which helped keep my hunger in check but I don't need it any more for depression. Anywhooo....I guess what I am wondering is...does spiro cause weight gain? Anyone else have experience with it and Armour? Thanks for your time.

  • Armour is the bomb!!!!! I used to take Synthroid, found a doc who would give me Armour and I am finally close to well. It has T1,T2,T3, and T4 and who knows what else, instead of just T4. Works much better as far as I am concerned. I take 90mg twice a day.

  • Hi Nona,

I agree I had a small run on synthroid and felt like crap. I much prefer the armour.
  • hmmm maybe I need to talk to my doc about getting on armour I take synthroid but have only been on it for 3 months I need to have my levels checked again and I think a new med or higher dose
  • I think it may be a good idea to check it out with the doc. Let me know how it goes. Good luck.
  • eichic:you maybe retaining fluid. try drinking more water to flush out your kidneys.
try eating more to increase your metabolism. the first week you may gain some, but after that you'll start loosing. glen
  • I talked to my doctor about armour thyroid and he says that basically what Armour thryroid is (in his words) "dessicated thyroid and you can never be exactly sure how much hormone you are getting in each tablet, I prefer to prescribe the synthroid because it has the exact dosage in each tablet.

Oh well I would have liked to given it a try, he also checked my levels again and they were in normal range, very low normal but normal none the less

  • Yes it is dessicated pig thyroid, and maybe many many years ago you could not be sure what you were getting, but that is not so anymore. The manufacturer has to adhere to the same standards as any medication manufacturer does, and in fact there was a class action suit against the makers of synthroid because they spread that lie about their compeditors when in actuallity Synthroid has had more recalls for inconsistant strength than any other brand of thyroid medication.

Armour is made just as accuratley to dose if not more so than synthroid. Unfortunately the makers of Synthroid has put on such a PR and advertizing campaign with the docs that the docs believe it is the one and only golden standard. So that is what they prescribe and that is what they tell their patients. But it just ain't so.
