Maybe I have overlooked this....but how do I mark a thread read?

You can mark a forum read, but not individual threads. To mark a forum read, click on the forum to view the thread list and you'll see a box to the upper right of the threads which says "forum tools". The option to mark the current forum read is in the drop menu.
