I have the opposite of decluttering going on this weekend sort of. My folks are leaving the country and we are inheriting some stuff. But it's all stuff I WANT, so it doesn't count right? We're getting a Freezer and this amazing old trunk that has antique magazines (that need to be gone through) in it. But we will be having them haul off an old desk in return.
Eventually we are getting a couch and chair to replace our craptacular ones. Can't wait. Well, maybe I can because I've very bummed about them leaving me behind but... what can you do?

den - i think it came from the Simpsons. My husband anyway. *LOL* My house too. It sucks when you buy stuff as cheap as possible with the intention of "when we are more stable we'll get good stuff" because it never happens! We should have waited and slowly got stuff. But, we are evolving.... slowly. Maybe even some day we'll get to live in a house instead of a nasty duplex with the most craptacular carpeting you've EVER seen.

which reminds me... anyone have a suggestion on what would work good to clean the most disgusting carpet you've ever seen? We've tried so many things and nothing works!

lizziness- I did have some success with a product called "STOMP" I got it in the automotive department of Canadian Tire so you may be able to find it at a hardware store near you. I used it to spot clean hot chocolate stains that the previous owner of our minivan had left on the carpeting and it did a pretty good job.

If you do find it I suggest you test it on a small inconspicuous spot in your carpet first.

ellis - that would be 100% correct! *LOL* The thing that ticks me off the most is that 95% of the nastiness is not even ours. It was the previous tennant. It was seriously so bad that the carpet should have been replaced. If we hadn't already given our notice for the old place we would have never ever accepted this duplex. Of course they showed us a nice clean unit and then we got into the craphole from ****.
At this point, I think we'll try to clean it and then buy an area rug to cover as much as we can. I swear those people must have used that carpet as toilet paper.

I feel for you, Lizzi. We have a carpet like that in our tv room. Makes me shudder. I try not to go in there. The kids eat in there, drool in there, sleep in there on occasion... it's like a rat's nest.
An area rug on top is a good idea! This may not work with your decor, but those grass-type mats are pretty reasonable, and they can look really good. We have a couple of large ones in our bedroom. They don't show dirt/dust at all. We vacuum them/under them once in a blue moon, and once a year I take them in the backyard and run the hose over them.

Ahem...Rats nests can be clean you know....

Lizziness: There is a law in Oregon against stuff like that just for renters. Landlords aren't allowed to be slumlords anymore... We had a slum lord in our renter days and he didnt even have the deciency to put in a smoke detctor (which was illegal). Once we went to court though, we had one in the next day, plus the broken window repaired, the leaky faucets fixed, etc..etc..etc.. then we moved OUT. What goes around comes around...this idiot got sued later on by more tenants and got a bad rap in town. No one would have anything to do with him anymore, then he went to jail for beating his wife. Some people..I tell ya!! Humph!!

ellis - good idea. We've procrastinated this long because we didn't think we'd stay too long, but it looks like we will afterall. Rugs are really expensive, we'd need like 5 of them to cover the place!

noodles - wow, that is craziness. This place is pretty bad but not that bad at least. All the screens have holes in them, he's replaced one. The door was damaged, we had to fix it ourselves. They came out once to fix the disposal, still doesn't really work. They replaced the outside light once, but we've had to do it since then. Overall it was crap. My hubby asked them to discount the place because we had to do some serious cleaning before we could even move our stuff in there and the guy told us no. This was a few years back now, but it was so upsetting I was sick for like 3 days over it.
The one thing I was happy they took care of was the basketball sized wasps nest that was in the back yard. We had to haul out the old persons garbage and we still find things occasionally that they left behind. it's icky to say the least.

Lizziness-Reminds me of the carpeting in our first house. The livingroom was ghoul green. The kitchen (YES!!) was indoor/outdoor orange and brown patterned (which clashed with the orange and brown patterned wallpaper!!) The smaller bedroom was bright orange shag, and the big bedroom was technicolor yawn...light blue, off white and tan splotches. It looked like some mythical creature had puked in there!!! We got rid of what we could, but lived with the puke carpeting the whole time we lived there!!!
