Alternachick chat June 16+

Good morning everyone!

Darn- why am I so cheery- it is Monday! :?:
Oh yeah, my boss will be gone for the next 2 days

Well I finished fixing up my balcony this weekend, all the herbs are planted and I have a tomato plan, a cherry tomato plant, some hot peppers and 2 strawberry plants on the go :)

I just have to get rid of the old air-conditioner and put up the mosquito netting and I am all set! We sat out there on Friday evening listening to the rain falling-very calming :rain: :df:

Lidian 06-16-2003 12:39 PM

Apropos of what we were chatting about on the old thread...yeah, Ellis, even despite the quiet on either side of us, I cannot stand sitting on the front porch, as there are loads of people across the street who are always out and bouncing around (the young'uns bounce & the old people sit around watching everything and watering their lawns 52 times a day) - too crowded! I sit on the back porch - well, not today though as one of our quiet neighbours is building a strange wall through the middle of his back yard. NOT to keep us out, actually! :D

...You never know though!

Lidian:)

ellis 06-16-2003 12:45 PM

I wish we had a back porch to sit on. I don't know why, but I like sitting "high up". Our back yard is pretty cozy, but I prefer the verandah.

Mauvais, I'll save some herbs for you this year. I'm thinning things out and putting the cast-offs in pots... you can come and take what you want when you're ready. You could even take them in the fall and have them indoors for the winter. (for as long as they last...)

Ruthxxx 06-16-2003 01:18 PM

What a super day! I've not been to the garden yet because my cousin from The Island dropped in for coffee. He is a very reticent Brit who seldom chats. He was sooooo wound up today that Harry thought he was on drugs! Gail kind of cleaned around us but we did finally move to the porch.

Get this! I have a decorative birdhouse on the lattice wall out there and a robin has built her nest on the roof. She has three eggs in it right now and we will have to just leave it. Yick! Bird poop on my nice front porch. Oh well, at least it's white and so is the wicker and the lace runner on the old sewing machine!

We love to sit on the front porch too, Ellis. We are sort of hidden because of the flower boxes and the hydrangeas when they grow a bit more. I love being out there and watching the world go by. It's not a multicultural neighbourhood - mainly us village serfs and wenches and the Summer People who are mainly Americans and think we are "quaint".

mauvaisroux 06-16-2003 09:55 PM

Thanks for the offer the herbs Ellis , I will be taking you up on that soon :) We so have to do dim sum this summer.

Bagzz 06-16-2003 10:49 PM

i am jealous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!-------ontario is so lush and warm and we are freeeeeeeeezing down here!!!!!!!! i did dim sum in toronto once---deeeeeee licious---didn't know what i was eating half the time but it was cheap and well worth it----i heard that the chinese community was having trouble with the restaurant business because of sars-----makes no sense to me----all the cases seem to be totally related to hospitals----imagine the dixie chicks adn the rolling stones being afraid to perform----i have to call them wimps----my dh had to fly up to TO and he never gave it a second thought----sorry for the rant, but this really bugs me!!!!

dentrassi 06-17-2003 01:32 AM

Mauvaisroux-NOPE!! But we WILL be members of the vulgar nouveaux middle class!!! (Don't know if that is better or worse!!)

Wildfire-NOPE!! But afterwards you can help us "celebrate" (Don't want to jinx anything!) until we're blue in the face!!!!

Ellis-Those cows are really purty!!!!

Squeak-Well......at least maybe the bathroom will be fixed!!!!!

 :D :dizzy:

dentrassi 06-17-2003 01:35 AM

Ellis-You are completely right about the woman at the top of the screen. She is starting to look like a STICK FIGURE!!!! At least now they're showing her face instead of just her belly!! (If you can even call it that!!)

Ruthxxx 06-17-2003 06:27 AM

Aw, shucks! I liked her belly. It reminded me of the Cheerios box!

ellis 06-17-2003 07:16 AM

Did you hear that, girls? Ruthie? Mauvais? Never in my LIFE have I ever heard us described as being "lush and warm"! Wow. It sounds really good here.
Bagzz... you have the OCEAN! That makes up for EVERYTHING! aaaaaaaah... the ocean...
And I agree with you re: T.O. Crazy.

Funny, Ruth. As soon as we cross the border we think, "These Americans are so quaint with their lawn ornaments and flags." :D

Den, I was just saying to DH the other night... "If we're ever stinking rich, let's get some steak knifes that cut meat." So let that be one of the first items on your list. :D (we're teasing you re: the money, honey. It WILL be nice to have a little more, though. You'll be more "comfortable".)

Hugs to all...
:grouphug:

mauvaisroux 06-17-2003 10:45 AM

Oooooh....I feel very uppercrust now...I have wood handled steak knives- the real kind that cut meat  I bought them on sale for $4.95 each (down from $15.95 each).

Ellis you should check out the kitchen ware store on Bank near Lisgar -most of their stuff is pretty pricey but they occasionally have some really good deals-that is where I got my steak knives-bargoon queen that I am :queen:

Ruthxxx 06-17-2003 12:03 PM

OMG! I sent a set of bone-handled steak knives to the Yard Sale. I think they were THE wedding present of the 1960's - along with grilled cheese/waffle makers.

ellis 06-17-2003 12:45 PM

Oh Mauvais... I know the one you mean. The one that keeps saying it's having a "closing down sale". :D
Yes, they have a lot of good stuff there... I must check there periodically.

Damn it Ruth, you're throwin' out stuff that I WANT!! I could have used the sandwich thingy, too! DH's Mom has one of those, and she (used to) make the most delicious jam sandwiches with icing sugar sprinkled on them. They were like little pies. (totally not on my diet)

ellis 06-17-2003 12:48 PM

Oh, how sweet. My DH is home for lunch  , and he just gave me a handful of pamphlets from work on drugs for depression. Thanks honey.
(do you sense the sarcasm?)

Ruthxxx 06-17-2003 02:16 PM

That store was having closing out sales in 1958 when I worked Saturdays at the old Eaton's at Laurier and Bank! What a joke!
Sorry about pitching stuff you wanted, Ellis. Did I ever tell you that you remind me of mjy daughter?

 Some things I can read over and over and STILL laugh every time.

Yes, Ruth... you DID mention that. And I'm not QUITE sure how to take it. ;)

mauvaisroux 06-17-2003 07:11 PM

 They trick you with the sign....it says "Going out for business!" but you mind thinks it says going out of business so you think you are going to get amazing bankruptcy deals -verrrry snekky...we understimate ze snekkiness!

ellis 06-17-2003 07:15 PM

Oh good grief! They sure fooled ME!

mauvaisroux 06-17-2003 08:04 PM

Yeah, they fooled me too

I found a website that had some free and yummy looking WW recipes:

www.freeweeklyrecipes.com

ellis 06-17-2003 08:22 PM

Oh my goodness! That site looks YUMMY! Thanks, Mauvais!

Lidian 06-17-2003 10:54 PM

Looks great, I just bookmarked that site - thanks, Mauvais!

Lidian

mauvaisroux 06-20-2003 07:39 AM

You're welcome :)

It's going to be tough to stay OP this weekend :(

First we are going to Ikea's midnight madness sale where they are supposed to be serving refreshments and they also have the lovely Ikea cafe there -must avoid eating meatball dinner and the almond tarts!

Then we are going to a Rib Festival on Saturday night where there will be tons of BBQ meat and the only vegetables there will be baked beans and coleslaw.

Sigh...give me strength oh Godess of slimming!

Ruthxxx 06-20-2003 07:44 AM

Sigh! Sometimes I am sorry we ever left the city.
Oh, well, the local market has ribs on special so we may do our very own ribfest. Harry made coleslaw yesterday so that part is easy. A Coleslaw Festival? Naw - has to be ribs too.

ellis 06-20-2003 08:59 AM

Mauvais, I might be at IKEA tonight, too! :)

mauvaisroux 06-20-2003 09:57 AM

We are going at around 7:30 so we may see you there (meet you in the Swedish meatball section? ;) )

Ruthxxx- Beerfest is on this weekend to (hic)

ellis 06-20-2003 10:19 AM

Good luck finding a parking spot... that's all I have to say! It's ALWAYS crazy there... should be worse than ever tonight. I'll think we'll just head straight for the far parking lot and get in an extra walk. I hate circling... circling...
okay. Swedish meatball section. Right beside the bread and butter. And Swedish desserts.

mauvaisroux 06-20-2003 11:34 AM

Yeah, I hate trying to find a spot there. We usually park further away and walk to. I think it is dumb to drive around for 45 minutes looking for the primo spot by the door when you could just park further away and be insid the store in 5 minutes - that's an extra 40 minutes of shopping you could be doing!

....mmm...and those thin ginger cookies :T

dentrassi 06-20-2003 12:30 PM

YOU ARE ALL MAKING ME HUNGRY!!!! (And I'm trying to fast until after my Dr. appt. this afternoon!!)

ellis 06-20-2003 12:37 PM

After your doctor appointment, drive up to Ottawa and you can go to IKEA with us. :D Naturally we will not eat a thing.

Ruthxxx 06-20-2003 01:13 PM

Hey, Den! I'll meet you there. We will sleep in our cars overnight and then go for a Dim Sum breakfast!
I can dream, can't I?

Goddess Jessica 06-20-2003 01:22 PM

I love IKEA's meatballs... and the crunchy toffe dessert thing... I cheap though, I always order the $1.95 meatball children's meal. Yum!

Goddess of Slimming!!! LOL! Damn, I knew I was praying to the wrong Goddess.

dentrassi 06-20-2003 09:43 PM

Ruth-That sounds GREAT!!!! We'll have to be quick though, because I'm joining Ellis on the South Beach Diet on Sunday!!!!!

Ellis-NO FOOD?!?!

Jessica-At least you have an Ikea. I checked them out on-line and they look great, but there are none in Michigan. (BOO HOO):(

ellis 06-21-2003 06:10 AM

No WAY! No IKEA!?!?! You poor darling... you MUST come up! :D It's the best place to shop for those of us with not-to0-much-money-but-hoping-for-a-little-style.

Lidian 06-21-2003 10:30 AM

I like those IKEA meatballs too! And the little pastries. And shrimp and dill sandwiches. I think the chocolate/Marzipan things are great (I think that is what is in them). And they used to sell the bags of my fave candy, mint/chocolate things like round pastel Smarties, but mint & chocolate. Called Peps, not to be confused with the large Peps like York peppermint patties, that are my little weekend treat--

Lidian

liz321 06-21-2003 11:54 AM

Ikea had a big open house here last night too

........but I couldn't go.......I was too busy scrapping! Not the fists up type....the picture cutting type.......how was it? Lots of great sales? Since they moved the Ikea here in Edmonton from the west end to the south side I haven't set foot in one.....have a good one everybody!

Eliz

dentrassi 06-22-2003 12:50 AM

Did all of you have fun at the sales? I REALLY want to visit and check one of them out (and go for Dim Sum too!!!)

ellis 06-22-2003 08:12 AM

I didn't go. :( I fell asleep at around 7:30 . Just as well. I don't need anything, and I have to learn how to budget. Again.

dentrassi 06-22-2003 11:10 PM

HAHAHAHA!!! I'm the same!! I budget like crazy and then spend it on something I don't really need!!! (Today I bought a polo-style shirt and shorts in an orange sherbet color!! But they WERE on sale, so it was only $14.)

ellis 06-23-2003 06:46 AM

oooooo.... what a bargain, dah'ling. Walmart? :)
I was at Malwart yesterday. I got suckered in by one of their flyers. They had old DVD's on sale for $4.88. Picked up about 8 oldies. Including an Abbott and Costello (my son LOVES them), a couple of Alfred Hitchcocks, and Murder on Flight 102, with Farrah Fawcett. Should be real winner. snicker.
And DD picked up a few items of clothing for herself. I'm trying to convince her to shop at the Sally Ann like the rest of us, but she's in a "stage". I'll just have to periodically pick her up things from there and tell her they're cast-offs from her Aunt. Which she is totally cool with.

mauvaisroux 06-23-2003 09:24 AM

The Ikea sale was a blast. We were walking around with our friends mocking everything ie. saying stuff like "Ikea - Swedish for poot eet togezer yoorself stÜpid!" "big box of Swedish wood coming through" in a fake Swedish accent  we are so mature  but hey, at least we keep ourselves entertained.

I bought some cd shelves, a storage bin, a frying pan for $4.00, a wooden lazy susan for $5.00, 2 sets of spice jars for $1.00 each set and a set of six huge candles for $1.00.

They were also giving out cookies and drinks (mmm...lingonberry juice) and serving breakfast for $2.00 -yummy! :T

We also went to Futureshop and bought a new VCR to replace the broken one.

Hey, Ellis -we were at Walmart on Saturday too! :) we had to buy a new BBQ since our old one died last week. :chin: how come everything breaks at the same time? :?: I bought a couple of those DVD's too - The Cabinet of Dr. Caligiri = an old black and white silent film from some German director and a collection of 3 Hammer films on one DVD= Dracula with Christopher Lee, The Devil's Bat and one other film I can't remember the name of right now.

So now we are in the poorhouse again :( oh well  I have to get my budget back on track too!
