Is there an active thread for 50+ ???
I just joined today but cannot seem to find any thread for the 50+ category. Does anyone have any ideas or does someone need to start a new 50+ thread so us oldies can share. Those under age 50 just have no idea how hard it is to lose weigh after menopause! And then 60 hits and HOLY COW it's a huge issue!!
|
If you want to start one up, I'm in! I think sometimes folks don't know that on this forum it's not an auto-notify if you post something and you have to subscribe to a thread to get notices that there are new posts on a thread. That stymied me when I first joined. Now I check new posts every day in any case. :)
|
50+ Active Thread - YES PLEASE!!
I would love that - nobody really DOES understand how hard it is after menopause. Ridiculous
-Deb- |
You just started one
Hi, I am Sum and 51 years old. At my highest weight I was 190 pounds, I am 5'3. By Christmas last year I was as low as 143 pounds, but life happens, and I had a bit diet fatigue, so I let it slip and I gained about 11 pounds back. I am back on the saddle and this morning I was 151 pounds. I think you can change the topic of your post, if you wish. Something like over 50's daily check in etc. |
I was way up to 192 at one point. Ug.

Hi ladies, just came back on here today, Im 53 nearing 54 in a few months and I am struggling big time with trying to lose weight. My hormones are haywire and I just look like Im 8 months pregnant!! I keep starting to try and lose and give up!! i was in a changing room last night trying on clothes and upser at how my body is changing, I need to take control!! i need help to get motivated!! thanks |
Hi shaz1234! It's challenging, to be sure!
I have some old clothes (some are 20 years old) that I've been trying on with my weight loss and the clothes definitely don't fit the way they used to. I can remember being 146 before and I definitely didn't have the rolls I have now. Ha. For motivation it's been helpful to remember that I'm in this for the long haul and that I just can't slip back into old habits. When we are older the weight loss is slower, the toning of the body doesn't work the way it used to, and many of us are limited in what exercise we can do. Slow and steady will win the race, I'm sure, but boy, it's hard! It may sound silly, but one of the things I've made part of my wardrobe is a body stocking. I have one called Lipo In a Box. haha I don't wear the thing every day, but when I want to wear a skirt with a blouse and I don't want those pesky rolls of flab to be so obvious, I put that on and it smooths things out. |
Hey Old Biddy, thanks for your reply. It is really difficult and I know what you mean, I have gained pounds but not enough to account for the fat and the bloat. Your body stocking is a good idea!! It is all about making lifelong changes, I really need to pick up on the exercise more. I have two dogs and a gym membership so there is no excuses!! I find it hard to get that willpower to stick to it :-(

Hey! I just turned 50 in February, and I (unfortunately) lost this weight before back in 2011/2012 but oy veh, SOO different this time!!! I'm all in!

Hello all,
Can I join you all? I was part of a 50+ group here. There was kind of a regular group and others came and went. The regulars finally dwindled away. I missed it and kept hoping there would be some sort of group again. I'm glad that there is some interest for that. I have struggled with my weight most of my adult life it seems. I have slowly lost and am hovering right around 205. I got down to like 197 for about 10 seconds ~ LOL. I need to get back to work. Need to try harder to get in some walking. We moved at the beginning of 2018 from the Houston area to a small town in Colorado. I haven't felt very good a lot of the time since then. The elevation here is higher than anywhere I have ever lived and I think that affects me. The town I lived in in Texas was 141 feet of elevation. The town where I live here in Colorado is 7,116. I have been working with a couple of my doctors and am finally starting to feel better. Looking forward to getting to know you all. Take care |
I'm all in. I'm 55 this year and decided that I didn't want to enter 56 in the same bloated body. So far since March I'm down 46.2 lbs but its been a struggle. Full time work (mostly sedentary though), daily exercise, dietary changes. I hate that a male coworker about my same age stopped drinking soda and dropped 20ish lbs in a few weeks. Totally not fair! Plus I can either be freezing cold or boiling hot, no happy temperature medium.
I track everything in an app, which claims I should get to goal by December 15. I'm hoping for May of next year! But either way, I'm finally taking time to care for me. Like the old commercial says "because I'm worth it". glynne, being at that altitude can be tough. Especially since you've pretty much come from sea level. Glad you're working with your doctor to help adjust. It will get better. |
Welcome Etherbunny. Glad you are here. You have done an awesome job so far. Keep it up!!
|
I will be 70 on my BD. Hope thats not too old old to join you kids. :) I agree its been hard to lose the weight. Especially the stomach. Last time I was in the 170's I had more of a waist. Maybe if I lose another 10. Im 5' 10" so 160 will be thin for me.
YMMV but maintaining has been hard for me. I have to watch every morsel I eat. My weight goes up and down daily. I swear I wasn't this obsessed with food when I was fat. :dizzy: I agree with Old Biddy. Took me a minute to figure out I needed to subscribe to a thread. Even ones I created. Most forums if you post on a thread you get a notice. And I finally learned to check the new posts. That's where you can find the active stuff. :D |
Welcome Phaedra ~ you're not too old. Glad to have you join us. You are doing great so far. What period of time did it take you to lose your weight? Keep up the good work.
|
Hello Glynne
I kinda started last August at 250 something but I didn't get serious about it until I started Medifast Nov 1st at 237. I started transition in July at 172 and now Im in Maintenance. So 65 pounds down on Medifast. But my weight changes daily. I did make it down to 170 a couple of times so Im counting 67 pounds. :) |
Well, I finally got out there and walked today. 1/2 an hour. I'm way out of shape. I went with my walker because my balance isn't good and I get tired real easy. I set my timer for 15 minutes and walked as far as that would take me, then sat down on my walker (it is the kind that has a seat on it) and rested for a few minutes, then headed back. I was pretty slow when I first started out, but picked up some speed on the way back. It was only about 60*, so that felt nice. I went out before breakfast or taking my meds or drinking my water. I didn't want to need the bathroom when I wasn't near to it. I found an app for walking ~ the Under Armour and put it on my phone. It tracks your distance, how long you walked, how many calories you burned, how many steps you took. I really like it. It even makes a map of your route. I should think to use it more often ~ like even when I am shopping or what ever, but I don't think of it until I am doing it intentionally for exercise. Also, because of the rheumatoid arthritis, sometimes I get tired real easy, so it helps to have that seat on the walker along with me so I can rest a little if I need to.
Hope all is well with you all. Take care |
Great first steps Gayle! The more you use the app, the more it becomes habit. If you have an iPhone, the health app (with the heart in a white box) also automatically tracks your daily steps if you carry your phone around. I've been using an app to track all my food intake. I really like it. I'm the only one who sees it but I find it to be a positive reinforcement to stay on track, or to see if I've messed up somewhere.
I love the back to school time of year. Even though my kids are long grown up, I find September to be a great time to start anew. So here's wishing everyone a great start to a new you today! |
I'm so glad we've got an active conversation going. :) I made my goal but it's fluctuating a bit, which is normal for me.
My waist hasn't gone down as much as the rest of me, which I suspected would happen. I was hoping to wear shirts tucked into pants but I still have that pesky overflow when I wear jeans that fit otherwise. Ha. |
I wonder if the waist is because of our age. Also I don't have rolls. Mine is just really round. I havent tried hard to lose more cause I don't want to be one of those skinny old broads that looks like an olive on a toothpick.
Then again after the problems Ive had with hair loss Im starting to wonder if it might be some of the food Ive been eating. TMI. Ever since I went on this diet Ive been really tootie. |
I've been tootie as well, Phaedra! haha Fine when you are at home...but out in public? ;)
Yes, I'm thinking the waist thing is a combo of age and the fact that I was obese and everything just expanded and now won't contract again. Ha. I am doing some old-fashioned waist exercises and trying a bit of stomach muscle toning. It can't hurt. I have the rolls, which make it odd that I can wear a four jean but can't wear a shirt tucked in because it looks silly. ;) |
Yes Biddy fine at home. Trouble is it comes out in public too. Makes you want to stay home. Not that Im all that social anyways. But I do like to go to the grocery every once and a while.
I know what you mean about the expanding. My upper arms look deflated. What kind of exercises are you doing. I did go to check out the fitness center but I felt like a fish out of water so I never went. Silver Sneakers makes it free for us old folks. And theres the tooting. :o Size four. Oh my word. I just got back into some of my old fourteens. |
I still do my tai chi but I can't do any weight lifting of arms due to nerve damage. I do some port de bras ballet and that tones the arms.
For the waist I do the oldie but goody side pulls and arm reaches. Richard Simmons has a Tonin' Downtown series that also has some ab exercises and I try to do that, too. |
I will look into those but I will be honest. I have never been that good about exercising. I am pretty active though. More so after it gets cooler. I hate the heat. Hopefully I will lose some more of me in the fall. :carrot:
I live in the country and I have a lot of flower beds so theres always yard work etc. My husband is disabled so if anything in or out gets done I do it. And I always have a project. I just got done rebuilding the stone around my pond. Next project is putting down 250 bags of mulch after I edge all the flower beds. |
That sounds like a good workout, Phaedra! :)
|
Well, I didn't make it out again for walking. I did have a couple days where I was out and about running errands. It isn't very speedy walking, but it is up and moving rather than just sitting around the house.
I like that description ~ tootie. Me too ~ Dollar Tree the other day. Phaedra ~ I feel tired just thinking of your 250 bags of mulch. I'd like to try that Tai Chi sometime. I'm not good about attending classes though. I'm not good at the exercise. I think I want to, and have plans to do so, but when the time arrives, it seems like there is always something I "need" to do instead. I lack follow through and consistency. Sigh..... But every day is a new day to try. And every day I do do it, is one less day that I did nothing. Hope you all have a good weekend. Take care |
I don't go out to classes for Tai Chi. Thankfully there are some great dvds out there. ;)
My favorite is David-Dorian Ross's TaiChiFit Over 50. It's only about 30 minutes and it's gentle and relaxing. Mr. Ross has a number of dvds that are higher impact, but I started out with this one when I couldn't do anything else. Now I use it for relaxing and working on my balance and going deeper, or reaching further into the moves. |
Thank you for the info Old Biddy ~ I'll have to check it out. I had found some videos on Youtube ~ Qi Gong ~ kind of similar to the Tai Chi I think. They looked relaxing also. And I sure could use something to improve my balance.
Thank you ladies for being here. I enjoy having others to share with. I missed being able to come here ~ to encourage each other and learn from others what is helping them. |
I read someplace that naturally skinny people are fidgity. Theyre constantly moving. So Im working on becoming fidgity. I have a note on my laptop that says don't forget to figit.

Hello all,
Well, I had a reply made and was ready to post it ~ there are some new features that weren't here when I was here regularly. I clicked on the wrong thing and lost my post. I will have to try again later. Hope all is well with you all. Take care |
Hi I know I am a bit behind! I am 54 and this post menopause is tough. My mind is young!! LOL
I'd love any support I can get!! I just start Ideal Protein and it is working but it is not easy. |
Hello, all!
I’ve been looking for an online support group, and am hoping this is it. I’m 65. Weight has been an issue for me since I was 13. In my 40’s, after I had my son, I lost 100 lbs on Weight Watchers, but over the decades, surprise surprise, much of it has come back on. Due to the arthritis in my knees, I can’t walk far, as I used to. I bought a baby boomer bike (Electra Townie) and have been working on getting back on it. It’s both exhilarating and terrifying. (Other health issues: sleep apnea, asthma, allergies, restless legs. And I can’t eat wheat, as it gives me asthma, so I eat gluten free.) I’m back on WW, which works well at home since I do the cooking and my wife wants to count points too. Today I am getting my shopping list together for tomorrow. I want to plan my breakfasts, snacks, and lunches better, as they especially have gotten out of hand. Oh, and desserts. I want to eat more fruit and fruit based desserts, and cut back on the sugar. |
I'll be 65 Sunday! I'm having some serious issues and I don't know why!? I'm eating at night, which I have never done before! Three kids,
7 grandkids.I've always had a weight issue, but when I was younger I was able to keep my weight to where I was stage comfortable (performer). When I had to stop performing and working...I packed in on. I went up to 240 and I just hit 5'. I had weight loss surgery at 60 and lost my weight. I did great for three years and then stupidly decided that I'd gain a it for the holidays and get it right back down. I live in Arizona and all my friends and family are 1800 miles away, When they came out for a big visit...they all wanted my holidays recipes and I though I'd enjoy, gain a bit and get it back off. Well...now I've gained back 30 pounds! No mater what I do, I can't lose. I'm staying low carb any more. I do have 7 oz of Merlot wine in the evening, which I can't give up! I was hospitalized for severe insomnia.... hallucinating, the whole works, it was terrifying. Nothing makes me sleep. One Dr gave me hydrocodone and it worked but I also became addicted and had to kick that, which was horrible!, Nothing has had helped. Counseling, to see if it was psychological issue, every pill in the book ......finally, an old medication called "trazidone", combined with two Aleve PMs, and a glass of Merlot...a ctually works enough to where I am getting in 4 to 5 hours a night= I've switched to counting calories!! First time in many years. I jinked for some support. I look forward to getting to know you guys. I'm staying at 1000 cal and some days 800, as I am not able to do a lot of exercise. Sorry it's so long. Aaaaaanyway. Been looking for support for my age! I'm now counting calories. I need to do better! |
Could we ask for a 50+ forum
|
How do I get my old photo to change to my current. I've changed it, but it keeps showing the old one

Hello all,
I've been wishing this thread would be active again, then I don't do a very good job myself of keeping up when others join in. I had been away ~ went to Ohio and met up with my sister to go visit my mom. She has dementia and lives in the memory care unit at a nursing home. I am glad we get to go and visit her, but it is kind of sad too. Health wise, she is hanging in there, but it is her memory and speech that give her trouble. The nurses and my sister and I feel that she understands a lot of what we are saying, but we can't understand her. Sometimes a few words will come out nice and clear. Happy Birthday yesterday LadyV. Hopefully someone will know how to help you change your picture. Hello AnnePandora ~ I like that description ~ baby boomer bike :) I have never heard them called that. I have a three wheeler (not electric) I call it my granny bike ;) Hello VayVay, Phaedra and Old Biddy Hope you all are doing well. Take care |
Happy Birthday LadyV. Hopefully somebody will come along who knows how to change your pic.
Hi glynne I don't do a very good job of keeping up either. Then again I start feeling weird when my name is the last post on a gazillion threads. I lead a pretty boring life. I don't really have a lot to post. Nobody wants to hear about how Ive already taken my husband to assorted doctors four times already this week and he has appointments Thursday and Friday. Sorry to hear about your Mom. BTDT. Mine are all gone now. |
Hey ladies, I'd also like to join in, I am sometimes not great at checking threads and I know I can't respond every day..but I'll do my best.
Been a member here since 2002!!! and struggling with my weight since 10 years old. I'm not *too* overweight but enough to bother me and almost never feel comfortable in my own skin. I'm 58 (about to turn 59 in a month-ish) and am still pretty active, work full-time, volunteer, have a yard that I mow/weedwhack/flower beds; ride a motorcycle. Used to work out pretty regularly; have slacked for 5 months  and am getting back to it. I used to be a die-hard Gilad fan; then fitnessblender; now I am a devotee of Pahla B. Besides needing weight/self-image support, I think ladies of our age also need support on what is now looming on the horizon. I've actually felt frozen with fear at times, thinking of ageing and dealing with that. I guess I am trying to fight back with keeping active. Phaedra - I would have listened to your day of taking husband to appointments :) and yes very sorry to hear of the Mom who is not doing great, so hard. Sometimes 'a blessed release' (grandmother's term) is hoped for :( I also struggle with periodic depression and have to constantly look for the half-full glass. nice to get to know you all :) |
I will be 50 in June...(NOT looking forward to that milestone AT ALL) and deep in pre-meno! I've always struggled with my weight but it seems to be piling on more than usual when I don't eat more than I used to and with all of the crazy hormonal stuff going on, I am too tired to exercise--I lost a bunch a couple of years ago by alternating pool jogging/swimming laps with barely any adjustment to my diet and LOVED it but stopped when I went back to work full-time and can't get the energy and motivation to go. <sigh> Hubby and son I had an account here about 12 years or more ago, forgot what email or password so I just signed up again hoping to get some encouragement!

I am 78, over weight and have hypertension. I have been following the Mediterranean lifestyle diet since last September. At this point, I am looking for better health and a more comfortable old age. No matter how successful I am, you are probably not going to see any selfies of me in my underwear looking sexy. That ship has sailed😸.
any other oldies but goodies out there interested in the Mediterranean diet or jus diet in general? |
