I have lost all my weight with NO exercise because of joint issues (tears, strains, frozen shoulder). I have had to cut my calories/portions down. I found if I had too many grains/breads during the day, my weight stayed the same. If I reduce them, then the scale moves again for me. Just a suggestion you may want to try.

Hi Dina. Welcome to the 50+ thread. Do you have access to a microwave at work? I used to take Smart Ones breakfast meals to work. They have lots of different meals and I thought they were pretty tasty.
Hello, thank you for the welcome
I do have a microwave at work and I would love to take a smart one meal. My question is that some people tell me not to have stuff like that because it has a lot of salt??? Is this true?
Also silly question here but when I'm replying here is it always proper of me to do the quote thing? Lol

Then of course I have a lot of cut up veggies and fruit. I eat both my breakfast and lunch at work. I eat almost no processed foods -- mostly organic and avoid GMOs and chemicals, fake sugar, etc. With just a bit of creativity you can have some very yummy food without that much effort.

Hi Misti,
Whats Gmo? Yes you are right i just need to get creative.

Dina - Smart Ones have some of their frozen breakfasts marked to indicate less than 500 mg of sodium. I eat 2 slices of turkey bacon and an egg just about every day so I can limit my grain/bread intake. That's about 340 mg of sodium there, so I don't think < 500 mg is too bad and compared to fast food, it would be 10 times better. When it comes to breakfast, I love to have traditional breakfast dishes. ...... But I can always eat breakfast for dinner.

Hi..I'm back after quite an absence.. I get very disheartened with trying to lose weight because every time I seem to be doing well my back pain will be very bad and it's a case of just making the most convenient or quickest thing to eat. I've lost and gained the same 5lbs so many times it's unreal!
Looking forward to reading all your posts and gleaning some info to help with getting things moving in the right direction again.
I am calorie counting and trying to keep my carbs as low as possible.. but I do love a bit of bread..

These are my goals for each day: Calories 1200 Carbs 60 SatFat 20 Protein 90 Sodium 1500 Fibre 20

Welcome back emaline29! I know what you mean about having convenience foods while dealing with pain. I have had my share between my knees and ankles. Just think how convenient an bag of salad and cherry tomatoes with low fat dressing would be. Or a slice of deli ham (in the package) with a slice of low fat Swiss cheese rolled up a lettuce leaf with a touch of light mayo. Roasted veggies in the oven are kind of easy, too. Drizzle some olive oil and garlic on sliced zucchini, yellow squash and stick in an oven at 400 until they get a little brown. I drink V8 low sodium for one of my veggie servings. Fruit is really convenient, too. I cut my oranges so I don't have to peel them and apples are wash and eat. Strawberries with lite whipped topping (the frozen kind you thaw) is a delightful dessert.

My new bread love is Pepperidge Farms Light Whole Wheat. 2 slices is only 90 calories. They are pretty small, but better than cutting a regular whole wheat slice in half for a sandwich and it is still 100 calories. My carbs are not set as low as yours. I try to get around 120 or less. I do try to limit bread/grains but I enjoy beans which have lots of fiber, some protein and are higher in carbs than other veggies. I do refrain from white potatoes, white rice, and white bread and try to eat sweet potatoes, brown rice and whole wheat bread occasionally. This morning I took a break from eggs and turkey bacon and treated myself to rolled oatmeal zapped in the microwave. All I added was sugar free maple syrup and ICBINB spray.

I haven't visited this thread in a while, and I realize I have been missing some very good discussions and tips!

Kat, I too have trouble with bread. My latest love is a bread I found in Target, of all places. It's called Little Big Bread, sprouted whole grain. It is 110 cals for 2 slices, very small thin slices, but has a chewiness to it rather than mushy white bread. I keep it in the freezer and it lasts me over a month since I only eat it occasionally.

I'm going to have to go back and read all the posts I've missed since I've been here. I need very badly to get back on my horse.

Welcome back to the thread Carol Sue! I absolutely LOVE any kind of bread. Wish I didn't because it takes everything I have to resist it.

Took me a while to get back up on my horse (7 years), but so glad I did. Though, my horse has gone from a gallop to a trot to a walk now. I really have to watch my calories and I know this will be for the future too, if I don't want to go back the way I was. And I definitely don't want to. DH and I are considering tackling the State Fair this year at the end of September. He had a total knee replacement in January and I have so much more energy now, we think we can endure all the walking involved. It is quite a hike just from the parking lot to the entrance!

It quieted down quickly here. I have had a very good past several days. My blood sugar has been great, and that's my way of knowing I have been good at watching my carbs. No major weight loss, though. I'm down a lb this morning, but I know from past experience that that can disappear so quickly!

Kat, we used to go to the County Fair every year and I enjoyed it. But both entrances involve walking up a pretty steep grade, and that's getting harder for me lately. I probably should consider it a challenge, but I don't want to be worn out before I get started. And I have to consider DH, too, as he is only in a bit better shape than I am. It it's hot and humid the way it can get in PA, that adds to the mix. We'll have to see. In years past I loved the carnival food, and that's not in my diet anymore. I doubt if they will have anything I can eat. It's not like they have a salad bar. LOL

Yesterday I exercised for 50 minutes. I need to make that a habit. How long do they say it takes to make a habit stick? 30 days or so? Thank God for air conditioning as I exercise indoors. The front shrubs need trimmed, so that will be a good workout in itself, but I'm hoping for a cooler, less humid day. DH cuts and I bundle up the clippings. When I worked full time I had the excuse of not having time to exercise. I really thought it was going to fit right in with retirement, but I can still find excuses. And now that I'm older I need it more than ever. I want to keep my mobility. Once it's gone, it's gone. I realize that some people need walkers or scooters due to medical issues, but I'm hoping to avoid that as long as I can. An hour out of my day is not a big price to pay.

Hi All!

This is my first post here. Late 50's and find myself the most overweight I've ever been. So discouraging. I'm having constant body issues because of this weight - mostly joint/muscle/tendon related. I've had enough. Low carb has worked well for me at times in my life, so giving this another shot. Even tho this is excruciatingly slow going this time. I'm determined to get to the other side and be able to MOVE freely again!

Off we go!!...........

Hi everyone! Carol Sue I'm going to have to try some of that bread next time I'm in Target esp. For hubs. Right now we cut a large slice of Aldi sourdough in half to make two slices for a total of 120 cal...not too bad. Also, good news with the blood sugar and the pound.....it all adds up.

I had way too many carbs on vacation and it definitely came back to haunt me on the scales. Today is the first day I feel normal after being back since last Thursday night. I have a few pounds to go to get back to
the before-holiday me. Hopefully it'll be gone by the end of the month....I'm trying!

Carol Sue - Good job on sticking to plan and dropping a pound. I have a hard time, too, sticking with any regular exercise. The only regular thing DH and I do is go out shopping a few times a week. Last night we walked around Ollie's because we saw a few things in the flyer we wanted. On Monday's we usually grocery shop and the stores here are those huge all-in-one stop and shop grocery stores and we usually need items at both end of the store. What is really funny, there is always something I miss and I have to go back to the other side of the store to get it, so I feel I get a really good walk in just grocery shopping!

OneTrickPony - welcome to the thread. I was exactly like you before I started! I was getting tired of wearing casts, boots and braces on my ankles and knees. It is SO worth it to lose the weight to help out your joints. You can do it! Just keep the prize at the end in mind when eating.

PQ - congrats on getting back on track. That's what really counts!

Down to 153.0 this morning for me. The NSA ice cream was calling my name last night, but I opted for an NSA fudgesicle - about half the calories of the ice cream. I like to add some mini dark chocolate chips and chopped pecans to my NSA vanilla ice cream, which adds more calories. This morning I am going to try out my new copper skillet I bought at Ollie's and cook turkey bacon and egg. My Teflon pan was starting to get a little scratched and the egg was sticking. Funny how little things like a new skillet can get me excited!

Down another 0.2 lb this morn....I think the water weight is gone and now I'm dealing with actual fat gain from vacation (2-3 lbs over twelve days). I'm trying to be active at least two hours by gardening and cleaning the house. Yesterday it was only one hour.....couldn't do it, but today is a new day and my aches are mostly gone.

It's time for a checkup and blood work....it's been seven months. I'm hoping I can get off the bp meds or at least halve the dosage.

Have a great day!

Hi Dina - my plan is South Beach, mostly, but I really have to watch my calorie intake, too. It's mainly about portion size, whole grains, veggies, lean proteins and low fat dairy. There is a forum for South Beach and subforum that lists the foods and portions allowed if you are interested - look for Phase I Foods and Phase II foods posts. South Beach Forum/FAQ
