Another high cal day-2248-It was the pie of course. It is all gone now thank goodness. Todays exercise-60 mins strength class at the Y. As I am writing this I am also watching a PBS special on heart health, in particular about sugar and carbohydrates. I avoid a lot of the high carb, low fiber goodies due to the calories but hearing about the impact of all that sugar is pretty sobering. Guess its time to get a more health conscious.

AM2-The 10,000 step plan is a great idea. You sound awesome.

Marie-That was smart to choose a motel with exercise equipment. It sounds like you are planning some good meals as well. Good for you.

maryea 11-27-2012 10:08 PM

Don't worry, we have lots of meters....LOL...I bought them when I could get them free (except tax) with coupons. I just had to make sure I used one that used the same type strips. I'm now using a pretty pink one...:)...got it at the same time as the other one but it hasn't been used as much so almost new. Dh found out the battery in the old one is shot so guess I could have just bought a battery but since I have all these meters I might as well use one of them.

Continuing to feel full although I am still eating too much for my bs as it is still high although better on the new meter. I keep telling myself I'll do better tomorrow but you know how that can go. At least my weight is doing pretty well...dropped down again..and remaining on the low end. I hope to get lower though of course as I'm still a pound higher than my sig. I'm feeling well except recently I haven't been sleeping well, so often feel kinda tired. Getting too many carbs at times doesn't help that either. Today I got one of those big exercise balls as PT wants me to do three (so far) exercises on it. I also had to get a smaller exercise ball. PT had already given me a stretchy band...think dh has one of those too from his PT sessions after his fracture. So we are building up out exercise equipment little by little...LOL Told dh if we can't get to the gym at least we have a lot we can do right here.

Mary, I bought an exercise ball on Black Friday for a hamstring exercise. Strengthening the hamstrings is hard if you don't have the specific weight machine for it. So what type of exercises are you doing with your exercise ball?

Am2, we share a similar trait - set a goal and then move heaven and earth to achieve it. Well done on the 10,000 steps. I bet your friend was cheering you one.

Tera, its a good thing the pie is gone. My day was a little high cal wise as well. A little over 1600 cals. I think I will be happy being at home where I can control the intake better. That said, I'm not unhappy about what I'm doing. This evening I used the hotel's recumbent bike and it was a couple notches higher in regards to quality. Funny not nearly as high as my own equipment. :D

Today was a no pie day-woohoo! Todays cals-1835 Exercise-60 min step class at the Y.

So I was reading the paper today and ran across another article on the detrimental effects of sugar as we age. I think the universe is trying to tell me something-or it is the newest health thing for the media. The title of this piece was "Are fats good for older brains?" and the answer is yes. Bring on the avocados and nuts-or any fat for that matter-in moderation of course. The bad news is that carbohydrates are very risky for older folks if you want to stave off foggy thinking. The same issue as last night's programs-the sugar from carbohydrates can be very, very bad for you. The participants in this study were over 70 but I think it is interesting information for all of us.

Marie-Glad to hear the bike was better than the elliptical. You are soooo good to exercise while you are travelling. I am duly impressed with your dedication.

maryea-Those exercise balls are challenging but an excellent tool. I always groan inwardly when we use them at the Y. (Sometime out loud too.) I always meant to get one for work because my posture is horrendous. One of these days.

Amarantha2 11-29-2012 11:03 AM

Woo hoo all, everyone seems to be doing great ... this is a flyby, though, as I am just about to walk out the the door.

I am doing well calorie wise and the 10,000 steps are still being done daily, plus the usual 2-3 x week weights and I've been adding some aerobic DVDs here and there for fun and for lateral movement.

Today is going to be a low side day calorie wise, I think.

Good Morning All,

Yesterday was not a good calorie day. I had a few drinks and then proceeded to eat a bunch of candy and nuts. I do not know why I do these things. I don't know why I buy and bring candy into my house. Well, I kind of know. I had chocolate covered peanuts because they only cost a penny with a store coupon and I had some Christmas candy because it looked so pretty and it was buy one, get one free. However, I simply cannot allow myself to buy this stuff anymore no matter what it costs. It costs too much in calories and sugar. Oh well, water under the bridge now. Today I will be good. I did exercise yesterday-60 minutes strength class at the Y.

Am2-Glad you stopped by and reported another good day. Keep on keepin on.

Amarantha2 11-30-2012 06:11 PM

Still chugging along okay on diet & exercise, kind of busy lately, frustrated on some things but the march to my goal weight is semi on track lol.

Teri, good job on getting the exercise in.

TERAPET 11-30-2012 10:31 PM

Ate too much today-I did not even bother to calculate it. It included pie again-pizza pie. I didn't feel like cooking and it was hot and convenient and yummy...and fattening of course. No exercise today but that was pretty much planned. Sometimes I work on Friday but mostly not. I will be back at it tomorrow.

Marie 12-01-2012 10:37 PM

Am2, you are an inspiration on your quest. I love that you are so into your FitBit. I saw one in the store on Black Friday. It was tiny.

Tera, let me join your club of too many calories.
Thursday I was too high. Friday, who the heck knows because I didn't have any regular meals. Today is better but not great. Not bad though. Certainly better than the last two days of my travels. I was re-united with my elliptical this morning and I decided it was time to push the workout. I did the HIT workout and it was exhausting. And exhilarating. Tomorrow is a Bowflex day. Did I mention I am so HAPPY to be home. Sadly today I went to my friend's son's memorial service. He was only 23 and fell rock climbing last Sunday. They had that parent's worst nightmare call and even worse, the decision to take him off life support. It was a sad service. So so sad.

Thanks, Marie, yea the Fitbit is very tiny, easy to wear or stick in a pocket. I've lost it a couple of times.

Tera & Marie, I'll join your too many calories club. High all week, hope the weigh-in is ok tomorrow, could use some happy news lol.

See you, all!

TERAPET 12-02-2012 09:06 AM

Well Ladies at least we are working on it. We come here, we track our calories, we exercise and we try to keep health and fitness a priority in our daily lives. When I think about how I used to eat and how it made me feel -I have to say I am much healthier. However, when I consider all the junk food and alcohol I consume on a weekly basis-that makes me kinda frustrated with myself. I know I can do better. Life is a journey and at least we are heading in the right direction. That said, yesterday was another high calorie day but I did get in 60 minutes of step class. Nothing terribly bad or good to report from the scale but of course I will keep you apprised.

Marie-Glad to hear you are able to resume your awesome at home workouts. Now that you are home and back in your routine, I am sure your calorie totals will improve drastically. I am sorry about your friend's loss. That is truly sad.

Am2-Just curious, how often do you get out and hike? I always just talk about and never get out there.

maryea 12-02-2012 12:10 PM

A quick post to say I lost .2# this week...LOL..basically I am stable at the lower end of my usual range. Continuing all my exercise although some days it is harder to get it all done.

ETA: Just saw your question Marie. I use the smaller ball placed between my head and the wall/door. Standing with the best posture I can (body in good alignment) as close to the door as I can, with the ball between my head and the door. Then I press my head against the ball (keeping my head straight) for 10 seconds and repeat this 10 times. I do this on each side and front and back.

The large ball I do two exercises. My balance on it is still not very good but I try to use the best form I can. The idea is to kneel in front of the ball, then lay face down on it with your upper belly/chest on the ball, bring your arms out to the side and the movement is sort of like swimming, moving your arms out in front on a high level while keeping your neck and head straight and your eyes looking at a point on the floor just a bit ahead of you. It is kind of hard for me to maintain the high level at this point. The feeling should be in the shoulder/shoulder blade. This is a tough one for me. The other one is pretty easy...I sit on the ball and walk forward a few steps while allowing my body to lie down on the ball with arms up and over head and hanging to sides. Very relaxing. Then I'm to step forward as I raise my body...that's still a little hard for me but I'm getting better. She suggested also that I sit on the ball and do mini abdominal crunches but that is just cause she knows I want to lose weight esp in my belly.

Happy Sunday All! A nice day so far. My Packers won over my DD's and DH's Vikings. Sad for them; good for me. DH and I worked on one of the two quilts we are making for Christmas. He is my elf. :) I'm hoping we get them done in time. We walked the pups for a 2 mile hike - up the biggest hill in our area and I went up breathing hard but didn't stop. That is amazing. Like Tera said, I look back to my past and know even after a few mediocre days, I am so much better than where I was. I used to have to stop 2-3 times going up that hill. And I put my calories in for yesterday just to face them and I was surprised that I was just over 1500 cals. I guess skipping dinner helped that one. Today I'm at 718 cals so far with an evening meal on the horizon. So I definitely feel back in control.

Mary, thanks for the explanation of your exercises. Do you feel they are helping your posture?

Tera, you nailed it with "kind of frustrated with myself". That's the way I felt. I knew I wasn't being bad but I was not being vigilant and clearly I expect that out of myself. So are we too hard on ourselves? Maybe. I think if the percentage of vigilance drops to a bad zone, then being hard on ourselves is probably a good thing. So I think my aim is to have my vigilance percentage high but not expect perfect. Now if I could only do that.

Am2, I hope your weigh in went fine. I know you are a high percent vigilant member so I bet it was good.
Marie

Woot! I can't type much on the iPad so will post more responses later!

Mary, congrats on .2 down!

I gained .2 but am happy with that as was a difficult week.

I am going to be focusing on this very heavily now, want results soon lol.

Tera, I walk daily but hiking in state park about once a week. I can't climb much currently like I used to, working on it, though.

maryea 12-03-2012 01:37 AM

A quick post before I head for bed. I'm very sleepy these days...probably getting way too many carbs. I haven't been tracking very well..gotta get back to it...it's probably cause I don't want to face the numbers! My bs was very high this morning.

Marie - Yes, the exercises are helping my back to get straighter. I've got a ways to go yet but I can see the difference. Not saying the ball exercises specifically but all of them together plus just being more aware and maintaining better posture in general. I am also not on the computer nearly as much.

Tomorrow my PT appt is not until 1 pm so I hope to get my full work-out at the gym. Now to bed...
