  • Hi ladies,

Trish - I'm glad you're getting established with a new doctor. Hopefully, he'll have that rash diagnosed and cleared up in no time.

Linda - yay, I'm glad you're back! Your trip sounds like so much fun! Carley will remember that performance forever.

Hello to anyone else reading this.

I've got errands to run in town, and should have already been gone, lol. Neal and I hope to go to the grands' ballgames tonight, but I think we'll get rained out.

The garden has lots of fresh tomatoes and other produce, and that sure makes it easier to stay OP.

    Have a good day!
  • Good Morning!

Sorry I don't have time to do individual responses at this time.

You people with your producing gardens make me envious. I'll probably plant tomorrow and hopefully everything will have a good start by the time I get back from my trip. That is if all the critters leave the garden alone. I'm going to the nursery today (I'm still looking for some Golden Bell peppers) and I read on their site that they have a coyote urine product so I'm going to see how much that is. I hope it doesn't attract coyotes--I'd rather have the deer and the bunnies .

    Have a wonderful day everyone,

    Doris
  • Hello all! Quick check in. Very hot here which makes it all the more miserable for those trying to clean up the oil spill, if you hear on the news of a place called Grand Isle that is just south of where we live, it is having a horrible effect on our pelicans who just got off the endangered list! Still doing good with my eating. Make it a blessed day! Tammy
  • Sorry to be off line for a day. I had a medical emergency yesterday. I fainted twice and the EMT's were called. It was a useful thing to be seeing a retired nurse, I felt cared for while the medics were coming to me. The good news is the reason for the fainting spells (checked with my MD today) is I no longer need one of the blood pressure meds. This is the first time in 10 years that a visit to the doctor resulted in removing a med instead of increasing.
I know today that I must be more careful in the Florida heat and humidity. Outdoor Exercise must now be done before 11:00 AM. Most exercise must be water related...bye bye garden.. hello dolphins.

Jane I was in Orlando yesterday and saw the vacation hotels again. Have you looked at the area around Celebration or Kissimee? Looks like their still might be some good bargains.

[B]Trish /B] So glad that you were wise and checked this rash with your doctor. Keep the baby powder flowin' and you should get better.

Tammy How blessed we are to have an "on site" reporter to tell us how things are. I am meditating for the pelicans ... they are nesting in our area too, so all is not lost.

Doris can you grow veggies in the desert? w/o peacock intervention?

all for now, I am headed for bed.thanks for your support
    Coralee
  • Good News
Coralee, good for you for having to get OFF meds, though, sorry you had to pass out to get it done, but good for you!!!

It is so sad with the pelicans and other marine life, our fisherman and shrimpers are suffering as well which means our economy will suffer and it gives the government an excuse to import chinese shrimp instead or our home grown shrimp which tastes SOOOOOO much better! But God will take of this in His own time and in His own way and BP is not the only one to blame, the GOVERNMENT organization that is SUPPOSED to oversee oil rings was not doing it's job and its sad because we talked to a man yesterday at breakfast at Huddle House who works for BP and had his shirt on with BP's emblem and said he has had to endure nasty stares and got chewed out by one lady at a gas station, it's sad how ignorant people can be, this guy is just like the rest of us trying to earn a living, he did not blow up the rig or cause the oil spill, yet he is having to pay the price. Its a mess!!!

Anyway doing paperwork on my last day of "vacation" Have a blessed day all!
  • Hi Ladies

This probably won't be too long as my arm with the rash gets sore quickly when I type. DH's and my trip to the new doc was very helpful. We have found a very good doctor. Can you believe that this rash turns out to be the shingles. Although painful, it could be worse. Also found out that I'm diabetic. The doc works with obesity and had 3 ways to go with dieting for diabetes one is eyeballing a plate and choosing 1/2 with nonstarchy carbs, 1/4 with starchy carbs and 1/4 meat, fish etc. They give a food exchange to go by. Another is calorie counting and the third choice diet is low carb. So I can choose which way I want to go and limit my calories to 1800. So it was a good visit for me.

DH had a bad clot in his left leg and they are putting him on coumadin. That one visit may have saved his life. I wasn't happy with the way cardiologist was handling things. So we had a really good day overall and our problems are fixable/manageable. My blood sugar was not extremely out of range and as the weight comes off, that will go away. I am going to do a combination of the 3 diets he gave me. It is really strange to learn that I probably was not eating enough, because I seem to be losing again. As of today, I've lost about 9.5 lbs so far this year. Still doing the zig zig calorie thing.

I'll be reading but may not write as much until I get this arm with the shingles well.

    Y'all have a great day.
  • Trish I have had several customers come down with the shingles, NOT a pleasant illness, I've also seen it years ago working in a hospital, but it seems to be more common now. Glad hubby got diagnosed. Good luck to both of you. God Bless. Tammy
  • Hi ladies,

Doris - I sure hope you don't get coyotes, lol. We've got them around here, and when they howl, our dog Molly goes out and howls back, silly girl. Have you tried hanging net bags of human hair? Our old pastor used to get hair from the barber shop and do that to keep deer away. Not sure what to do about the peacock, lol. Btw, if I could, I'd share my fresh veggies and fruits with you.

Tammy - I am just sick about the wildlife in the Gulf! And even more sick about what that will do the the economy down there. YAY for you, being OP! Hope you got the paperwork done.

Coralee - yowza, I'm sorry you fainted, but so happy to hear that you don't need the BP meds any longer! That's great news! Thanks for the info about the Florida hotels. I just put a deposit on a rental house. The owners call it a "villa" but I think that's stretching it, lol. It seems very nice, and is much cheaper than all of us paying for separate hotel rooms. When we go to Disney, though, we really like to stay at one of their resorts. Budget ones, of course! Pop Century is my favorite.

Trish - my dad and two of my sisters have had shingles, and even my young Katie had them. They can be very painful, so I'm feeling for you. Yay for you, losing 9.5 this year, so far. Good going on the doctor's part, finding the clot in Tony's leg! That sure could have turned out badly if left undiagnosed!

Hello to anyone else reading this.

I got all my errands done today, and will have another busy day tomorrow. I'm having lunch with a friend, then I have a meeting at church, followed by my stylist appointment (getting my highlights redone, whoo hoo!), then Neal and I are having dinner with my sisters and their fellas. We do that every Thursday. I picked and cleaned fresh leaf lettuce to share with them. It is curly, crisp, and yummy! Goes great with the tomatoes.

    Have a good evening,
  • G'day to all:
I am finding that inside house cleaning is very challenging when the heat index is up to 98; in small house w/o central heat and air.
I managed to do some kitchen counter cleaning yesterday, picked up the clutter in my bed room today. then rested. It is cooler now, and wondering if I could go on a cleaning frenzy... er no! that is my addiction kicking in.

Jane You are right about a Florida 'villa'. Down here that means painted pastel with a tile roof. big whoopin deal.

Doris I tried again this year, and once again the roses are dead and the weeds are doing fine. Good luck
  • Hi all,

Coralee - I'm wondering how you manage to not melt living in FL with no a/c. Is it on the fritz? Just be careful to not get overheated, ok?

Hello to anyone else reading this.

Wow, we've been having some fierce storms in this area. All the sweet corn in the garden is bent over, at about a 45 degree angle, from the wind. It will follow the sun and right itself soon, though.

Tomorrow I'll be in Indianapolis at my family reunion, then at another one with some of Neal's family on Sunday.

    Have a good weekend,
  • Just wanted to touch base since I will be gone for a week,

Jane: Great weight loss news! Thanks for your offer of sharing your garden bounty. If I were closer I would take you up on it, but then of course if I had your climate I could grow my own stuff .

Coralee: Congrats on getting off your high blood pressure med! That's even more incentive to lose weight I think. My major gardening problems stem from being in the high desert (4750 ft) so that means a very short season with very hot, windy days and cool nights (90s/50s) so the poor plants have no idea what to do. These conditions are great for my hobby cacti (I mostly grow the S American kind that come from the mountains) and of course the weeds; not so much for tomatos and peppers. The local farmers grow a lot of alfalfa and garlic. The peacocks are visiting less frequently since I don't feed them now--thank goodness!

Trish: Sorry about your shingles-I guess that's something for many of us to be concerned about. Just add to the list of things that happen to you when you get older. It's good that you found a doctor that has diagnosed some health concerns. You've inspired me into making appointments when I get back from my trip.

Tammy: That whole Gulf Coast tragedy breaks my heart. The poor families that lost loved ones, the pictures of the birds/animals that I can't bear to look at and the uncertainty of the economy weighing on everyone's mind. I hope things start looking up soon. No matter what some people may say, we still need oil since it's in everything, but I hope we can learn some valuable lessons so this doesn't ever happen again.

Well, I hit my toe very hard on my dining table yesterday and it is really ugly . Don't know how I'm going to walk around Disneyland, but I'll figure it out .

Talk to you when I get back,

    Doris

  • Jane- I have lived in Tampa since 1981. Most of my summer experience was during my working years, and the offices and libraries were air conditioned.
When we moved into my little house, it came with central heat and air. Poor maintenance and neglect on my part, plus the age of the unit caused the air conditioner to fail. Our temp stop gap answer was to purchase 3 window units/ During the summer I try to limit my exercise to the early morning or late evening. It has worked for us so far, but I long to have my house back in shape. The 14 hours of cleaning is just a start.

On another note: Let me tell you a secret about the pristine sand of the Florida beaches. Beach erosion due to hurricanes and such often strip the beaches of sand. As Florida is one giant sand bucket (fossil peninsula left over from the ice age), the counties go inland, dig up sand and truck it to the beach. In about 20 years time who's to know?
I agree the oil disaster is grim. At least this happened in the 21st century when we have more answers and ecological steps to save the system. Imagine what would have happened to FL & LA if the event had occurred 30 years ago.

Official weigh in today, I think I did all right; will let you know.

    Coralee
  • Coralee You know you are right, there is more knowledge now than before. And this IS sad for our Gulf region, BUT, if you consider that there have been 8 oil spills, 7 from ships and 1 from a rig, it's a good track record, especially when you add up all the offshore rigs over the years and all the drilling that has been done, and by the Grace of God, this is a rare incident, now if BP and the government can just get their act together and do the right thing we would be so much better off.

    Have a blessed day all.
  • Hi all,

My family reunion was so much fun, and so was Neal's, the next day. Miss Madison is with me for a couple of days, and we went out for lunch (totally OP for me) and then did some shopping. She's in the tub now, so I wanted to pop in and tell you all hello.

There have been raging storms and violent winds going through middle and southern Indiana off and on for the past several days. Scary business!

Doris - I hope you have tons of fun in Disneyland in spite of your injured toes. Maybe you could get a scooter to ride in; I believe I would! Tell Mickey I said hi. I'm sure he'll know just who you mean, lol.

Coralee - oic about the a/c. I really don't like to clean my house anymore - too many other things I could be doing, but I do like it to be clean, so I do it anyway. Not as thoroughly as a decade ago, though. Where's that darn fairy godmother when you need one, lol.

Tammy - how's everything going for you?

Hello to anyone else reading this. Newbies are welcome - just jump right in.

    Toodles for now,
  • G'day folks:
0845 in Tampa and already 85 degrees and climbing. we will be having massive thunder showers. Today's meditation style is zen = mindfullness in activity/work
Prepared ceviche for the first time yesterday. I have always been leary of eating this dish in Tampa/ not too sure of cleanliness in kitchens/ was fishmonger once so I know the perils. Wonderful results.

now 1039 and the outside temp is 90 degrees/ no outside gardening at this time

trish I hope that you are not too uncomfortable in the heat.
jane aren't family reunions fun? my sis and I once said if we had a reunion we could hold it in a phone booth... weren't many of us at the time.
