Active Folks Over 50 - #13 AGAIN

Greetings! :welcome2:

Active Folks Over 50 is a place to talk about fitness and healthy eating information as it relates to weight loss and/or maintenance--and also about any work, fun, hobby, or volunteer activites you're engaged in. In other words, the active part of your life!

Just a few guidelines for this thread:

- Raves about grandkids or ranting about your kids is out of bounds.

- Lengthy discussion of your illnesses, conditions, treatments, and medical procedures in general is also out of bounds on this thread. So is whining about old age! ;)

- Positive stories of vacations taken, volunteer work, or achievements at work or elsewhere are highly encouraged! As are recommendations for books, movies, discussions of weight related issues, etc.

Join in!

Hey!

Here we are again! Why, wasn't it exciting to see that it was all... a dream?

Hi all! Hope you had a GREAT Friday!
We have had (and continue to have) nasty weather. But, I have been able to get out in between the raindrops and get some gardening done. It was a long week, and I am glad to put it behind me. I'm hoping for a WONDERFUL weekend!

Stay strong, stay OP, and have fun!

EZ, you're a nut! :dizzy:

Morning, folks! Yesterday I pruned back a large bush at the corner of the house. It had to come down about a foot or so... got out me loppers and had at it. It will be easier to deal with now, but I'll have to give it some water for a few days. Fortunately this isn't the first time in my long and crazy life that I've pruned bushes... so I knew what I was getting into.

I'm seeing a new chiropractor these days. I've used chiropractic for, oh, about 30 years--it really seems to help my achy back, etc. But I hadn't found a new one since we moved, until now. Needless to say, lots of things are out of adjustment. The good news is that having lost weight, I don't put nearly so much strain on my lower back, which is now in good shape!

Have a good Sunday!

Jay

Nothing exciting around here . . . yesterday it got almost hot . . . today, strange weather -- overcast and coolish but it still feels very muggy out there. Been doing quite a bit of walking the past few days, but this might just turn into a Gazelle or WiiFit adventure instead.

Isn't it wonderful -- lose weight and every part of the body seems to start feeling and acting so much better.

Have a great moving and shaking day, everybody -- see you later -- :carrot:

Thanks Jay...:chin:...I think :twirly:

Angie has had back problems since 17 when she was hit from behind in an auto accident. She has seen a chiro for about 30 years too. Really helps her to get cracked now and then! She swears by her yoga :yoga: too!

Happy pruning!

Oh, and you are asking me what I am smoking???? :)

I will however divulge that I have observed this weekend that the drinking of absinthe does nothing to enhance one's autoharp-tuning.

Jay - you have my admiriation. I won't do bush-pruning. Right now I am cat and house sitting, and it requires some drudgery, so I am whining about it all. I am a terrible domestic. I like going to work though, I mean my job. Someone explain to me why people understand it when people say they want to retire, and they think it's wonderful to do so, but then they look badly upon people who don't keep their living spaces tidy? I am the opposite; I want to go to my job till the day I die but I absolutely loathe anything housekeeping-related!
Thankfully, I live alone so no one else has to put up with my mess!

Hey Jay and Gary and CD and any other faith-interested folks: It's been a while since I took the Belief-O-Matic quiz, and a couple years ago it scored me as a liberal Quaker, and this time I took it 4 times in a row, and got different no. one results each time: Liberal Christian, Hindu, Unitarian, and some kind of Buddhist - the kind that starts with an "M" -- I guess I'm all mixed up, or, all for one, and one for all or ??????????????????? I'm sure there's a message in there somewhere!

CountingDown 06-08-2008 05:08 PM

Jo - thanks for the Belief Net reminder - I hadn't taken it in a few years either. I'm a liberal Christian at the top and Hindu at the bottom. And, as I have stated on numerous threads, I'm not a domestic goddess either. I would much rather work extra hours than clean anything. I love my time at home, I like "projects", but cleaning - definitely not my "cup of tea". My roomba, my auto shower cleaner thingie, my dishwasher - favorite appliances in my house :D

Jay - I see a chiro too when I need one. Though, losing weight and exercising regularly has really, really changed the frequency of my visits. I agree with Gary - yoga and pilates and weight training have done wonders for my back and neck.

I spent the afternoon pruning and digging in the garden. Years ago, I planted some veggies, including carrots and turnips. Now, every year, these wild 6 foot tall "things" appear in my garden and take all my energy to dig them out. And of course, I nevere get the complete root so they keep coming back.

It did feel good to work in the garden though, we had a hard rain for about 3 hours before, so everything smelled so fresh, it was a great way to spend the afternoon :D

JayEll 06-08-2008 05:56 PM

Hey, that Belief Net quiz is interesting. While I was taking it, we had a thunderstorm come up, and the internet kept dropping from my DSL modem... Ooooooh... (Looking upward for lightning bolts  )

Anyway, I came up Liberal Quaker, but I think I know why that is... even though in reality I'm Mahayana Buddhist (technically Vajrayana, but never mind).

Happy Monday everybody -- we have a gorgeous day on the go so far -- hope the rest of you are getting decent weather too.

the slim me 06-09-2008 09:33 AM

Good Morning all. It was a lovely, warm weekend, untill......Sunday evening we got tornado warning and some very heavy winds and rain. The sky got so dark for awhile, really scary. I kept thinging maybe i should go to the basement, but didn't.

I had never heard of the Belieb Net thing, but it sounded interesting. According to them I am a 100% reform judiasm. 98% orthodox jew, and only 69% liberal christina, which i really am.

I've never been to a chiropractor. Not that I don't believe in them, but my back injury is work realted and the doctors at work really frown on going to a chiropractor and of course my insurance doesn't pay for it either. Losing weight has made some difference in the amount of pain. I've never done yoga but i am thinking about that too.

Laurie, Can't imagine what would be comming up in your garden like that. But anyway, gardening is such good exercise and beats the treadmill.

CountingDown 06-09-2008 08:20 PM

Quick fly in today. Work was busy, blood bank was crowded, and they almost missed my vein, so it took almost 2.5 hours to get through :( AND - I have a big nasty bruise to show for my efforts. Then a meeting at church - whew - I'm beat.

Hope you all had a great day - I hope to have more time to post tomorrow.

JayEll 06-10-2008 08:06 AM

Good morning!

the slim me, MD doctors often frown on chiropractors--depending on the part of the country you live in. After all, what if you got better without their care? ;) Chiropractic isn't terribly expensive--my insurance does cover it, but I have a high deductible. I just don't even bother billing the insurance--pay for it myself.

CountingDown, I stopped donating blood because the last time I had a bruise for two weeks.

Things are getting busier for me--the A/C annual service is this morning--down here, you really want to make sure everything is OK... and then it's time to start thinking about the trip next week--I mean really thinking--as in, what to pack, etc.

Have a good one!
Jay

meowee 06-10-2008 09:55 AM

Good Morning . . . I'm running very late this morning, but wanted to say a quick HI . . .

the slim me 06-10-2008 11:29 AM

Morning ladies, it rained all night and looks like it's going to rain all day. Nice for the flowers and the lawn, not so great for me! But, as my grandma used to say "don't question God's work".

Laurie, Sorry you had such a bad time at the blood bank. You too Jay. I know sometimes it's annoying and you can get a bruise. But blood is so vital. Not very long ago the hospital was so short of blood that we weren't allowed to transfuse anyone unless their HH was below 6. usually we transfuse at 8. My husband and son are type o and get called all the time to donate.

Jay, I know the doctors are threatened by the prospect that a chiropractor might actually do some good. I work in rehab, so you know there is some competition there. I would like to go just once to see what they say. But it is pretty expensive here. You're going on a trip next week? If you mentioned it I must have forgotton. We're going on vacation next week too.

Take care, Freda

meowee 06-11-2008 10:29 AM

Wow . . . what a strange day this has been so far -- we had a very heavy morning but then a band of really wild thunderstorms went through just before 8 am and you'd think it was a completely different day now. Sunny, mild (but not hot), and a little breezy. Hope this is what continues for the rest of the day.

Hope the rest of you hve a great one -- keep things moving and shaking :crrot:

JayEll 06-11-2008 02:14 PM

I'm on a public computer at the library--our phone service is out, and the DSL with it. Grrrrr...

It's my day off from the gym, and I'm going to enjoy that!

Jay

meowee 06-12-2008 08:54 AM

Good Morning, Chickies . . . hope everybody is planning a great moving and shaking kind of day . . . :carrot:

Our weather is going to be quite cool (high of only about 67/68 is predicted) with half sun and half cloud -- a good day for the usual Thursday shopping afternoon -- so lots of walking seems to be in my activity plans today.

See you all later . . . :grouphug:

JayEll 06-13-2008 07:08 AM

Where are our regulars? Looks like we have a few MIAs...

We're finally getting some rain in the afternoon--it's about time! Things are burnin' up.

Time for me to get ready for my trip to Utah. We'll be mostly in the Salt Lake area, hangin' out, seeing the sights, meeting with friends. Someone I knew in my 20s is going to meet us there--she's lost over 50 pounds on WW! So, we can help each other not to stray too far off track.

It's hard not to treat vacation like an eating bonanza, but my attitude is, "It's just life in a different location."

I'm not leaving until Monday, and I'll have internet, so I'll be dropping in...

Jay

meowee 06-13-2008 09:58 AM

Morning JAY . . . have a great time on your trip . . .

Amazing how people come and go around here isn't it. Hopefully they will all wander back again soon. We miss you guys.

CountingDown 06-13-2008 09:27 PM

Well, we got enough rain for everyone - over 10 inches last night. Hail, wind, funnel clouds, uprooted trees - the whole shebang.

Thus, my inability to post. We spent about 4 hours in the basement while the tornado sirens kept going off as new funnel clouds were reported. Minimal damage - lots of flooding, but very little REAL issues.

Hope everyone is doing well! My crazy busy end-of-school-year is winding down, so hopefully I will be back to my normal posting schedule soon :)

Have a GREAT weekend all!

JayEll 06-14-2008 06:41 AM

CountingDown! How scary! Glad things are OK!

Jay

meowee 06-14-2008 11:32 AM

Oh wowee . . . that is scarey . . . :yikes: Glad it has calmed down and hope it stays that way.

 We are getting rain today, but the wind has calmed down, so hopefully it's not going to amount to anything really nasty -- just a dull and boring day.

Decided I'd do my own little 5K on the Gazelle today, but in three segments -- so the first mile is down; two more (and a bit) to go.

Hope everybody else gets to do some moving and shaking outside . . .

CountingDown 06-14-2008 10:54 PM

More storms tonight - just hail and wind and rain. No tornadoes :D

We ended up with 10 inches of rain during that last storm - nasty, nasty flooding issues. But, NOTHING like Iowa and other parts of MI.

So, I am counting my blessings!
Hope you all have a wonderful, safe and dry Sunday!!!!

meowee 06-15-2008 07:18 AM

Hi there . . .. . . and Happy Father's Day.

Our rain yesterday was quite localized, unfortunately. Today it's difficult to even guess at the weather by looking outside. There is a very large out-of-control brush fire raging just this side of Halifax (about two hours from here, luckily) and the smoke is definitely blowing this way. About 5000 people have been evacuated and so far there is only property damage but they just cannot seem to get control of the fire yet.

Other than that, guess I'll be having another indoor kind of day mostly because of the smoke in the air -- maybe I'll try for another 5K on the Gazelle.

Have a good one, everybody . . . :carrot:

JayEll 06-15-2008 01:43 PM

CountingDown--looks to me like you're down another pound! :cb: :cb:

I'm still packing--I'm on to plan B now, plan A having been discarded. One thing I wanted to take was just going to take up too much room. :( But, I can do without it!

Was trying on clothes--decided not to take the pants that are "a little too tight," because I figure if they're a little tight now, I'll never wear them.

Well, I'm going to the gym soon--it will be my last workout here before we leave. I'm going to make sure to find some centers in SLC to which I can get a pass. Need to keep up that exercise!

I sure miss some of our regular folks--where are hijude, SpinyMouse, Bill Blue Eyes, the slim me, and the rest of you folks? You know who you are... C'mon in, tell us what you're up to as summer is about to begin. :D

Jay

CountingDown 06-15-2008 09:53 PM

Linda - that fire sounds scary. Hope you were able to get in your gazelle workout indoors. I applaud your tenacity in using it. Mine is sitting in an unused bedroom, folded up and it is unlikely that I will use it any time soon. I should probably sell it at this point.

Jay - yes, I still seem to be losing about a lb. a week (or so) Thus, my continuing to lower my goal weight every 5 lbs. Thanks for noticing :D

Packing is one of those things I don't really enjoy. Traveling - yes - very much - but packing :(

I have a great routine for the non-clothing stuff, but I never seem to take the right amont of clothing - usually too much. Since we are traveling more these days, I am trying to find wardrob pieces that coordinate, travel well, and can be dressed up or down as needed. I had a GREAT wardrobe for this in size 20, but I'm not doing so well in amassing the same pieces in my current size. Ah, patience IS a virtue! And if I could bring myself to buy clothing that wasn't on sale ...

But that is another story ;)

I hope everyone has a wonderful week - and - I also miss our regulars. I hope they pop in soon!!!

meowee 06-16-2008 06:23 AM

Good Morning . . .

Actually, I did some strength work with light weights instead of Gazelling yesterday. Mine lives in my family room -- ugly, but handy, and hard to ignore (although sometimes I manage :o).

My day is looking decent -- both the weight and the blood sugar went in the right direction this morning -- but more importantly that fire has finally been contained and all but 50 of the 5000 evacuees have been able to go home. The firefighters finally got a break and the wind shifted and blew the fire back where it had already come from and it literally ran out of fuel.

See you later everybody . . . hope you all have a great moving and shaking Monday . . . :carrot:

CountingDown 06-16-2008 05:05 PM

Linda - that is great news all around! Thanks for the update on the fire situation. Hopefully, the air is clearing as well.

I kept my Gazelle in the living room for about 6 months. The first thing you saw when you came into my house - yeah - really ugly - but, at least I used it. Now that the kids are gone, I have turned the common area upstairs (used to be a play, entertainment room for the kids) into an exercise studio. It is my space and I get growly if anyone inades it (even the pets ;) The cats tend to get underfoot at the worst times).

I hope everyone is having a great day! Sure wish there was more traffic on the thread though!!!!

meowee 06-17-2008 07:52 AM

Good Morning . . . :grouphug:

You are right . . . it is very quiet in here. It will likely pick up again. :crossed:

Not feeling too perky today -- partly weather since it's pretty overcast and supposed to rain later one -- partly because this is the day for my annual Gyn visit -- partly because the weight blipped up again. :halfempty Oh well -- everything on the list will pass in due course.

Hope everybody else has a great moving and shaking day . . . :carrot:

JayEll 06-17-2008 10:34 AM

Greetings from Salt Lake!

Got here yesterday evening--the time change plus a five-hour plane flight kinda did us in.

We flew on Delta, and I sure like that airlines. You do have to pay for meals, but some snacks are free. The meals we bought were good, as airline meals go! I had a cheese and fruit plate, and the cheese was good--brie, cheddar, and smoky gouda. My partner had a shrimp caesar salad that was good also--although of course, they do seem overpriced. The cheese, fruit, etc. plate was $6, the shrimp caesar $10.

The seats were comfortable, too--though that may have to do with this being the first time I've flown since I lost weight.

Anyone else have airline stories? Positive or negative!

Jay

CountingDown 06-17-2008 07:01 PM

Jay,
I like Delta as well. We are flying Delta in Oct. to see the kids in CA. I usually go with Priceline or Hotwire for my tickets if I can, so I can't choose my airline.

I like flying United, but have had the most difficulty with them. My spring break flight to visit my Mom in TN last year was almost a disaster. They canceled the flight because of weather, and after waiting 3 hours in line to get re-booked, the soonest they could get me on a plane was 4 days later. Which would have given me only 2 days with my Mom. I was saavy enough to ask if there were any flights from any other Airports in MI, and the could get me out of Grand Rapids the next morning at 5:50 a.m. (which is about 150 miles south) I got the last seat on that plane. Of course I was returning to Traverse City airport, so I had to call DH and have him book a hotel room in GR for the night, and drive me down.

Any time you change your plans last minute, you automatically win the security lottery and qualify for additional scanning. Since I am a geek and travel with a boatload of electronics, they had to scan each and every piece with their special wand. It took me an hour to go through security and I caught my flight with 2 minutes to spare.

I too am much happier flying since I have lost weight. On the flight, they put me in the very back row by the window - the plane curves in and has very little leg room and an odd shaped seat as well there. A larger gentleman was next to me and both of us barely had enough room to breath. It was very, very uncomfortable. Thankfully, the flight was only about 2 hours long.

I was absolutely amazed when we flew this spring - at how much room there is now. And - how long that seatbelt tail is :D

meowee 06-18-2008 08:13 AM

Good Morning . . .

Our so-called national airline, Air Canada, is making news around here -- they've just announced that they are cutting their flight schedule and their staffing levels as well as increasing prices -- all because of fuel costs. Funny that their main competitor, West Jet, seems to be able to maintain regular staffing and service levels with only relatively minor fuel surcharges. I much prefer West Jet anyway and they are usually considerably cheaper than Air Canada for the same routes.

Boy is it every muggy and overcast today but things have been so changeable lately, who knows what the afternoon may bring. A good rain would be very welcome since it appears there are still some little hot spots in the fire area. They found the ignition point; it appears to be a case of 'careless camper'. Will people never learn?

Spent 90 minutes in the waiting room for my 15 minute appointment with the gyn yesterday -- glad he didn't check my blood pressure. At least he changed the picture on the ceiling over the examining table since the last time I was there. Two of the cutest little chocolate lab puppies you'd ever want to see. And . . . his scale weighed me 1 pound lighter than my own. Always a pleasant and totally unexpected surprise.

Have a great day, gang . . . see you later . . . :carrot:

JayEll 06-18-2008 09:26 AM

Hi folks!

Here I am still, in SLC. My friend from SF, who is here also, is running me ragged! She lost over 50 pounds in the last several months with Weight Watchers, and she is really into exercise... I know it may seem as though I am as well--and it's true I'm really consistent--but she is a notch above my level of effort! Yesterday we went for a walk in the morning around a lake, and her pace was... wow. Any faster and I'd be jogging. Then in the afternoon we walked over to 24-Hour Fitness (walked, mind you) where we have free passes compliments of the hotel, and worked out for an hour.

Maybe it's partly the altitude, though. Hard to get one's breath. I've gone from zero to 5,000 ft.

Today we're taking a drive in the mountain canyons to the east of the city. I spent many happy times in these mountains as a teen and young adult.

Food has been good quality, and perhaps more cals than needed, but I'm not tracking or weighing. What I am doing, though, is watching portions. I had a half salad for lunch yesterday, and took half my dinner with me last night. (The place we're staying has kitchenettes so we can store leftovers.)

See ya!
Jay

CountingDown 06-18-2008 09:39 PM

Jay - sounds like you are having a WONDERFUL time. All that exercise sounds like you will come home without gaining too :D
I love having kitchen facilities when I travel. I am so frugal about wasting food - stupid - but true. Being able to take it with me - even if I end up not eating it, really helps me not overeat those ridiculously large restaurant portions.

Linda - I need to make an appt. with my gyn - I am woefully overdue for any type of doctor's visit. I need to hold myself accountable and just do it. I really, really, really hate doctors and don't go unless there is something really wrong. :kickbutt: Time to do what I need to do ...

Hope everyone had a great day - sure do miss everyone else!!!
