Active Folks Over 50 -- #7

Active Folks Over 50 is a place to talk about fitness and healthy eating information as it relates to weight loss and/or maintenance--and also about any work, fun, hobby, or volunteer activites you're engaged in. In other words, the active part of your life!

Just a few guidelines for this thread:

- Raves about grandkids or ranting about your kids is out of bounds.

- Discussion of your illnesses, conditions, treatments, and medical procedures in general is also out of bounds on this thread. So is whining about old age!

- Positive stories of vacations taken, volunteer work, or achievements at work or elsewhere are highly encouraged! As are recommendations for books, movies, lively discussions of weight related issues, etc.

Join in!
------------------
In our last thread, we were discussing all sorts of things, from terms of endearment to underwear. :o

How is everyone today? Spiny, have you resolved your, um, issue with exercise togs?

CountingDown, I'm feeling a bit better today. My cold isn't lasting a long time this time.

meowee, will there be any slowdown in your work coming soon?

mermom, billblueeyes, hijude, and all the others who are visiting, Come on, don't be shy! Give us a post!

Jay

Walking today

Yahoo, first reply to a new thread. [I'm so easily amused.]

Today's goal is to get to the gym AND to get in a long walk. Alas, yesterday I let a cold rain keep me inside.

Hey Bill! Good to see you! Glad to hear you're still keeping at it. Great job maintaining for ten months. :cheer2:

meowee 01-12-2008 09:35 AM

Morning . . .

Mild and rainy here today . . . at least I'm not working. However, my horror-scope sounds ominous . . . like something I did in the past week or so will just explode in a million pieces. :yikes:

Have fun, gang.

meowee 01-12-2008 09:45 AM

Speaking of nasty-minded cliches . . . how about some of those old nursery rhymes . . . our weather this morning got me singing this one . . .

It's raining; it's pouring; the old man is snoring. He went to bed with a bump on his head and couldn't get up in the morning.

Gee'z . . . was he dead? . . . did he have a concussion? Did anybody ever bother to find out.

gailr42 01-12-2008 10:37 AM

He probably went on a pub crawl the night before.

Spinymouse 01-12-2008 10:56 AM

Yeah, those nursery rhymes can be pretty cruel, and fairy tales too.
Linda, what does your horror-scope say? I find astrology fun. I use the scientific/logical part of my brain all day at work so to conterbalance some yin in with the yang I fascinate myself with such psuedo-logical things as astrology.
Jo
(double Virgo, moon in Sagittarius, mars retrograde in Pisces, jupiter conjunct uranus in Leo, saturn in Scorpio, mercury in Libra, and I forgot the rest. I have it somewhere. Absolutely nothing in Cancer. I guess that's why I'm not warm and fuzzy, DEARS.)

Spinymouse 01-12-2008 11:07 AM

Oh, by the way, today I am not fussing over the bra dilemma, but I am going to put on my short wetsuit and swim in the 81 degree (that translates to freezing cold for me) pool at the fitness center. How bad is that, to need a wetsuit to go in a swimming pool. I think I am the coldest person on earth who is not dead yet.
Later, cutie pies.

CountingDown 01-12-2008 11:33 AM

Jay, hope you are on the mend!

Gail -

Linda - I never read my horoscope, the few times people have read mine to me, they always seemed so "generic" and never really seemed to fit the reality of my life. Here's hoping that yours is wrong!!!

Jo - I'm giggling over your posts. You are so right! I talk about killing birds and skinning cats without even thinking about it. I'm an animal lover and a vegetarian, for heaven's sake! Why do I use such violent adages? But of course the answer brings me back to last week's discussion of mothers, and such - let's just move on to another topic.

Today will be a typical Saturday for me (I'm in a rut, I think). PowerPoint presentations for church, laundry, house cleaning, WATP and some cooking. I try to cook extra on the weekends so that we have healthy left-overs to take for lunch during the week.

I'm hoping to add a marathon clothing sorting session this evening. My closet is crammed again (2nd hand stores are a weakness). I have so many size 20s that I still haven't been able to put on the donate or alter piles. I gotta put on my rutheless attitude and deal!

Have a great Sat. everyone! I'm off to my laundry pile.

Mermom 01-12-2008 06:54 PM

Did I miss the part about skinning mothers...or killing two mothers with one stone? Did this have something to do with not allowing or forcing someone to wear bras that bind? That's what happens when I miss a few days' posts.

Where am I and why am I in this handbasket?

CountingDown 01-12-2008 07:17 PM

EZMONEY 01-12-2008 11:42 PM

Up ....creek without a paddle, here.

JayEll 01-13-2008 07:34 AM

Well, EZ, it's always good to know which discussions to stay clear of... ;)

Good morning, all. My cold has gone into my chest today, and my head is stuffed up.

OK, enough of that. It's another day of the division playoffs, so I can sip hot tea while rooting for one team or the other. Anyone here follow football? The games yesterday were very good--ol' Brett Favre slippin' and slidin' in an inch of snow in a blizzard and Green Bay winning the game. You gotta love it. And then the great showing by Jacksonville again the Patriots, even though the Patriots won. Nothing boring!

I hope to go out for a walk today, if only to get out of the house... I'm tired of this. I did my weight lifting (hand weights) during the game last night, at least.

mermom, don't worry--it was just a discussion about... well... underwear. But nothing racy. Somehow birds and stones got into it, but it's best we move on. ;)

Spiny, I don't remember all of my horoscope either, but it goes something like, sun in Capricorn, Leo rising, Aries moon, Saturn in Leo retrograde, Jupiter in Sagittarius, Venus in hmmm... can't remember, Mars in Aries?, Mercury in Gemini. I have no water signs at all. Astrology is amusing as a symbolic system, but I don't live my life by it. ;)

Jay

Spinymouse 01-13-2008 04:14 PM

Jay - No water signs? OOOOOOHHH
Now that explains everything. :faint:

jo

CountingDown 01-13-2008 05:42 PM

I don't really follow football much (don't watch TV), but I do check the scores now and then online.

I just finished taking a picture of myself for the BL contest on 3FC (Red team Jo, different from you - bummer). I can't believe that I actually posted it. I might chicken out and take it down before the night is over - we will see.

It is snowing again here - big, beautiful, fluffy flakes. :)
I made veggie stew and homemade bread for dinner tonight. The breadmaker is baking - it smells sooooo wonderful! Something about winter and stew and bread - they just seem to go together.

Hope you all have a wonderful evening :D

Spinymouse 01-13-2008 05:46 PM

What ?! Where did you find out what our teams are?? I am going to have to look for the needle in the haystack now because there is more than one way to skin a pepper.

Spinymouse 01-13-2008 06:25 PM

I think I found it. I'm on the Black team. I saw your pics, Counting, and you look great! But where's your head?

gailr42 01-13-2008 11:58 PM

Go Chargers!!!!! Yesterday, we were rooting for Seattle and JAX. No joy there. DH was rooting for NE today. I am really not interested in any team not from the west coast. Well, I am not an Oakland fan, either. Picky, picky.

meowee 01-14-2008 07:36 AM

Hi . . .

I had a busy day yesterday -- but fun-busy for a change. Today, it's back to the work-busy stuff.

We are scheduled to get 6 to 8 inches of snow in the next 24 hours but so far nothing. After the melting and melting and melting over the past week; snow will be a real shock to the system. Hey . . . it is still Winter, right?????

Nothing else exciting around here . . . see you soon, gang . . . :carrot:

JayEll 01-14-2008 07:55 AM

Hey meowee! Yes, it is winter, and it snows... ;)

Hey Gail! Go Chargers! Wasn't that something? And I was shocked, I tell you, that the Giants won over the Cowboys. Oh dear.

Spinymouse, I'm glad you've found your team... without skinning any peppers... Poor little skinned vegetables... ;)

This coming week I'm going to join a new gym in my neighborhood, depending on whether I get paid...

Have a good Monday, everyone!

Jay

gailr42 01-14-2008 05:07 PM

We had to have our septic tank sucked out this morning. Everything backed up last night. Yuck. And double yuck looking in the septic tank. I thought I might never eat again, but that idea didn't last.

We had trouble finding the septic tank, so while DH was running his tractor looking, I was digging a bunch of little holes with a shovel. I found the tank, and a bunch of muscles I didn't know I had. Damn, that digging takes a lot of effort. That is going to count as my exercise for today.

CountingDown 01-14-2008 09:38 PM

Spiny - I LOVE your picture - and your HAT! But where are your striped socks?
My head MAY appear in my final progress picture - we will see. You are a braver woman than I am:cp:

Gail - of course all that digging counts as exercise. It is crazy that I feel guilty when I count physical activity with a purpose as exercise - like it has to be "scheduled exercise" to count. It is a mindset I need to work on. The BEST exercise is activity that I can work into my real life - wouldn't it be great if I was so active that I didn't have to do WATP in the evening?

I hope you all had a great day. I'm thrilled that the scale was kind this morning. I'm hoping for a repeat tomorrow morning. I always wait for two days at the same weight before I get too excited about it :)

Spinymouse 01-14-2008 09:49 PM

Hi PALS-
Counting, I put up a second picture just to clarify that it was a veil rather than a black and blue face.
I am looking forward to seeing your victorious face at the end of this TBL thing! We are both going to win on our teams, right!!!????
Now as for football -- isn't there some big football event coming up? I think it's the best time ever to go to the gym because all the big guys aren't hogging the equipment. Best time ever.... yes, to be sure.

gailr42 01-14-2008 10:34 PM

One Sunday, I went to the grocery store during a Chargers game, thinking that no one would be in the store. Wrong. The store was full of folks with huge families of rowdy kids stopping to shop on their way home from church. Never again. If I were the mother, I wouldn't want to go to the grocery with my husband and kids. To each his own, I guess.

Man, you should have seen my salad tonight. It must have weighed two pounds. Chopped iceberg lettuce (we bought six heads at Costco), chopped carrots, celery, radishes, onion, bell pepper, tomatoes, low fat bacon bits and Trader Joe's low fat Ranch dressing. Someone on here mentioned the dressing, so I got some and tried it. It is good. I usually think that I am much too sophisticated to eat iceberg lettuce, but it tastes really good for a change. I also had a half a cup of mashed sweet potato, a steamed zuchinni and some scallops.

I've been wanting an Orange Julius lately. I found a recipe on line and I am going to try it for my bed time snack.

JayEll 01-15-2008 07:01 AM

Oh, I love Orange Julius! But I think I'd get going and not be able to stop. Where did you find the recipe, Gail?

Yes, Spiny, there are big football events coming up. But only this coming weekend and then the Super Bowl first weekend in Feb. So get your gym work in while you can. :p

And Gail... searching for your septic tank... I can't imagine! Oh that rustic country living... ;)

I guess I'll have to wander over to TBL forum and look for this photo...

Jay

meowee 01-15-2008 08:20 AM

Hi gang . . .

Everything is white and sparkly again -- trouble is it is still snowing and the winds are just howling. Luckily I don't have to go anywhwere today.

Nothing much else is new . . . at least not so far today, but stay tuned, you never know.

Spinymouse 01-15-2008 02:53 PM

Please forgive me if I am guilty of obit gossip or posting XXXXX rated food porn. This is just outrageous. I am surprised that the two quarts of hard liquor in one hour didn't kill him with alcohol poisoning. I am surprised he didn't weigh more than he did at his max weight. I am surprised he lived to be 89. 30 pounds of meat loaf in one sitting? 27 chickens? Unbelievable.

http://www.newsday.com/news/obituari...,4201258.story

gailr42 01-15-2008 05:07 PM

I googled "Orange Julius" and used the most commonly cited recipe. I didn't like it.

I am searching for a healthy smoothie recipe that tastes good. It doesn't have to be orange flavored. Somehow, the pureed fruit in the ones I make always tastes unripe even it it didn't start out that way.

CountingDown 01-15-2008 07:35 PM

Gail - I've never had an Orange Julius so I'm not much help for you with the recipe. I'm not much of a smoothie drinker either. I try to not drink my calories (except for my red wine of course ). I think there have been some good smoothie recipes posted here on 3FC. They used to have an Orange Julius place in the mall about 50 miles away, but I think it is gone. I think they also have them at DQ but I've only been there once in my adult life.

Jo - oh my, I agree with you. 330 seems like an absolute lightweight for someone with his "credentials".

Linda - we got more snow today too. The cold weather is headed our direction for the weekend - brrr! DH found a buyer for our "old" snowblower - a big honkin' 10 hp monstrosity that I can barely make move . We now have "his" and "hers" electric models. Mine is small, and lightweight - I love it!

Well, I have 5 second-hand jackets that I have to hem the sleeves on. I wish my arms were just a couple inches longer!
I hope everyone has a great evening :)

hijude 01-16-2008 01:42 AM

Hi everyone. I hate to admit but life has gotten in the way of my workouts this week. I need to focus more on keeping my life and health.:carrot:

You got me going on this bra thing and I was all over the internet looking for something that would work. Ended up ordering a Champion sport bra and a Platex that was pretty AND came in my size. I hate wearing them but maybe this will help.
One thing I did read Spiny is that if you are up a circumference size then drop a cup size. Or down then up the cup size.
I think I was on there for ages.....:mag:

Jo try some apple cider vinegar for the cold. The cold virus does not like the acid environment. Gargle with it. I know it tastes lousy but will help.

So half way through another week. Nice to visit with all you guys but I seem to be in a rut going nowhere. But I am in the right place just need to start moving.
Cheers everyone........

hijude 01-16-2008 01:49 AM

I used to make my daughter a protein drink. I used half a package of the desert tofu, a cup of orange juice and a frozen banana. Tasted just like an orange julius with a little protein. No idea of the calories as did not need to worry for her. Kept her full till noon.
I can not believe I just heard Counting say that she had only been to DQ once in her life. Bravo!!!

JayEll 01-16-2008 07:40 AM

Hey hijude!

That recipe sounds good! Yummm... I'll have to try that.

Once in a DQ is about enough... :p

I always thought the secret ingredient in Orange Julius was a little half-teaspoon of malt. But I can't prove this. Wikipedia says it's dairy creamer.

Oh well.

I am glad that eating contests have never appealed to me. It always seems so stupid...

What are folks up to today? Yesterday I went for a walk (wearing a jacket and gloves because it was rather cold here) and later went to the community center to ride the exercise bike. I still don't have my gym membership--waiting for a check to come.

Jay

Spinymouse 01-16-2008 12:10 PM

Hi Pals -
Does anyone else get emails from Amazon recommending books for them based on previous orders?
Today I got sent this recommendation:

Gastroanomalies: Questionable Culinary Creations from the Golden Age of American Cookery
http://www.amazon.com/dp/0307383075/...92660_pe_ar_t2

Interesting.

BillBlueEyes 01-16-2008 12:34 PM

What ever did you do?

It's hard to imagine what you browsed or bought that made Amazon think you're that kind of a person, LOL.

Are you gonna buy it and review it here?

Hi all - hope you had a great day. Doing fine here. Beautiful sunset tonight setting over the lake. Our community is next to two lakes. One of them is right in town - a block from the downtown area. We live in town - at the top of the highest hill, about 6 blocks from the lake. In the winter, we have a beautiful view (no leaves) :D

I'm doing well with exercising this week. Today I did WATP Firming (pink stretchie band workout) before work and did the Walk and Kick video after work. DH joined me :)

I've never had a gym membership. I'm just too frugal I think. I figure that I can buy a LOT of videos and exercise equipment instead of "rent" someone else's. There is no comparison of course, but I seem to do ok with my home routines. And - I'm not sure I would exercise as much if I had to go somewhere to do it. I think it is such an individual thing - a lot of people exercise MORE if they join a gym.

I made my "Pot O Gold" biscuits again tonight DH loves them. They have grated sweet potato in them. And - they freeze really well, so I can make a double batch (which I love to do).

JayEll 01-16-2008 09:15 PM

I don't live alone, and both of us are here all day long--so it's not always convenient to do an exercise video. The house isn't quite big enough! I sometimes do my Tae Bo tape with the sound off because I know the moves.

Besides, I like getting out of the house...

Jay

meowee 01-17-2008 09:39 AM

Good Morning . . .

Finally, it has stopped snowing after two days and finally, it looks like my power supply has stabalized. Yesterday it was going through cycles of 'off again/on again' -- with more 'off's than ons' Must get myself out and about today after two days of doing nothing, so I hope the weather stays coorperative.

See you later, gang . . .

JayEll 01-17-2008 05:27 PM

Hey! Went for lunch at a Vietnamese place--had Vietnamese coffee, which should qualify as a drug.

Rainy day here--not a good day for walking. And, why, it's almost evening now!

Hope you're all doing well today! :cheer2:

Jay

CountingDown 01-17-2008 09:08 PM

Jo, congrats on the contest win for the BL DVD or book and gum :)

Jay, Vietnamese coffee sounds intriguing - one ethnic restaurant I have never eaten in. Something to look forward to for my next trip. I am attending a technology conference near Detroit in a couple weeks - I need to scout out some possibilities.

Linda - it just started snowing again here. We are supposed to get a foot or so this weekend. And sub-zero temps too - BRRRR.

Another good day today. I ended up working until 6:30 tonight (I start at 7 a.m.). DH was just putting roasted veggies in the oven when I got home, so I was able to work in a quick workout DVD. Never would have happened in the old days. I would have been crawling in the door with my tongue on the ground saying, "wake me when supper is ready."

JayEll 01-17-2008 09:17 PM

CountingDown, isn't it amazing? You must feel so much better these days!

Jo--was this the dietitian thread? Wow! Congratulations!

I'm sorry to say the Vietnamese restaurant wasn't all that good--I've eaten Vietnamese food in San Francisco, so I may be spoiled. But, the Vietnamese coffee was wonderful... Wheee!

I haven't been really hungry since, but I did have a bit of chicken tarragon salad as a snack--and Ranier cherries are coming in, and I love those!

Have a good evening!

Jay
