Hi! I do weight watchers and whole foods. Not organic though. I mainly cut out processed stuff and sugar and sugar substitutes because it caused me to be hungry all the time and overeat. Once I got rid of them (6 1/2 weeks, now) I feel better and am able to stay within my points. I've lost 20 lbs so far, too! I stick to anything real....fruits, veggies, lean meats, egg whites or eggs...I don't do dairy, either....also overly processed. Beans are great. I stay out of the pantry. Shop the outer edges of the store. Recipes from clean eating.com or clean eating magazine help for ideas but some of the recipes are quite involved. Good luck!!!!
If you're in it to lose weight and not just feel healthier, I recommend counting your calories. It's still possible to eat maintenance calories without knowing it, even if you're eating well.
As far as organic foods go, just start with what you feel you can do. You'll make changes as time goes on, but it doesn't all have to happen at once.
I don't eat organic food, but my entire household eats at least 90% unprocessed/whole foods.
The biggest suggestion I have is to get used to cooking. If you don't have a lot of time to prepare meals, try freezer cooking or using your crockpot. One dish meals (baked chicken + vegetable) is a super simple way to have dinners on the table daily. If you're living alone, you can cook, portion and freeze for your own homemade freezer meals.
I think the real benefit to eating this way is that you are not fighting your cravings for the unhealthy stuff. Fruits, vegetables, proteins, dairy and whole grains can all be WONDERFUL if you put a little effort into it. And then you don't miss the other junk. If you read the "GOAL" thread, you will notice that most successful losers share the common bond of getting rid of processed foods. They are designed by marketers, psychologists, biologists, etc to make us want to eat more. And guess what? It works on me!
My best recommendations would be to only eat foods if themselves are the only ingredients (beans, produce, etc...), no dairy, and make plants the main dish most of the time. Not salads, but also stir fries, casseroles, etc...
