Hello everyone. I am 40 and want to get pregnant. I plan to lose 50 pounds before doing so. I just want to know if anyone here has had a baby after 40.
Thanks!

Thank you sooooo much for responding. I was beginning to think that I was a fish out of water. You just don't know how much this means!

But DO consider the possibility of having a child with special needs - that's happened with a few of my friends who had children later in their child-bearing years. How will that affect your daily life, your marriage, your finances, your retirement plans, everything?

I wasn't 40, but I was dang close! I was 39 and my son is the light of my life. We had trouble getting there, but we did it! We also adopted my second son and I was 43 then! If it's what you want. DO IT!

I am 46. I had my first child child when I was 44. I had to do IVF with donor eggs because my FSH was out the roof!! Physically I was fine. At that time I weighed 135 and had no health issues. I am comtemplating doing the IVF again, part of the reason I am doing IP. I live in MS now and most people I know are grandparents!! I am glad I am an older mom; I feel like I have more patience and appreciate the gift of being a parent more. I did/do think about being older when my son grows up, but I look at my family genetics; my parents are older and still very active, and grandparents were the same way.

You may want to check with your ob/gyn about hormone levels and such. My husband and I had been trying for over a year without much lich when I found out about my elevated fsh. Not all potential older moms have that problem. And some moms that I know that did, were able to change their diet and make lifestyle change and did conceive naturally. Just some things to think about. Being a mom is great!!!

Hi! First baby at 41, second at 43, both conceived naturally, healthy and beautiful. First you need to forget the stereotypes about the pregnancy later in life, relax, live and eat as healthy and possible and of course have sex. I was so stressed about getting pregnant as soon as I got married that I went straight for the IVF, believing I was too old to conceive. Two attempts, two failures. Went to see a prominent IVF specialist in NYC who told me what I just told you: relax! I got pregnant three months later. The second baby was an accident, again I thought I was too old to conceive, but mother nature thought otherwise!

Now I need to shed the lbs from two consecutive pregnancies! 35lbs to go...

I love it!!! Thanks. Did anyone have fibroids? I was told that I have them. My doctor is reassuring but I am curious to know if you older moms had them.

Hi there,

Not sure about the fibroids, no experience with them.

But I had my 3rd baby in 2009 at the age of 41. (Had my first at 35, second at 36). We thought (well, DH did anyway) that we only wanted 2 for the longest time. Just after my 40th birthday we had 'the talk' and decided to try for #3. Month 1 I got pregnant and we now have the gorgeous and chubby Grady toddling around the house.

BTW, I was never a 'normal' weight for any of my pregnancies. Including my last baby, I was about 45-60 pounds overweight going into each of them. I had textbook pregnancies and normal deliveries - in fact Grady was born at home with a midwife and no pain medication.

Like others said, do what you feel in your heart.. don't wait for a number on the scale or worry so much about your age - or maybe it'll never happen. Sometimes you just have to take the leap and see what happens! GL!

I am 45 and just got married for the first time. Neither my husband nor I have any children and we are hoping for a miracle but we are both okay with adoption if that doesn't happen. Nice to read all the encouraging stories.

This looks like the thread for me! I turned 40 just this past December. I've been married 9 years now and only had 1 pregnancy which sadly I miscarried in the 14th week. I know it's very common but it still was awful. Part of my reason for trying to become more healthy and active is because I've never really given up on the possibility. Whether is happens or not, who knows - but all I know is that I'm not going to make it harder for myself. So it's really nice to hear some other women who have had children later and such positive responses.

Very cool.
