Default 40 Somethings January Week 4 Chat

Happy Monday all, can you believe January is almost over already?! I got my bloodwork back, everything has improved except my cholesterol - maybe because I stopped taking that med as well? I should be able to pick up my scrips on Weds. It's just a really big hassle to do sometimes especially as my ride has bailed on me 3 times in the last 2 weeks. The pharmacy where I get the most generics on the $4 plan is not on the bus route. I just called and asked for a 90 day on the metformin so it will be easier to keep up on it. I plan to go back to eating salads for lunch at the cafe and hitting the elliptical on my lunch break as well. That seems to be helping. May stay away from the scale until I get back on track with my meds.

Everybody seems to be doing awesome : ) I hope y'all have a great start to your week!

Heidi - yikes...BIG MESS! THink of the calories you burned cleaning - probablye evened out that cookie/ice cream thing - and you ended up with a clean, scrubbed floor! Yeah, stuff like that SUCKS..but eh, it's life. Good job on holding it together.

Natalie- glad you lost the 2 pounds, but sucks you had to feel yucky in the process. Hope you're feeling better.

Lori Ann - that's awesome!!! What a great feeling, and congratulations

Kathi- glad to hear your bloodwork has improved...you'll get that cholesterol next time!

---
As for me, I have a 4 mile run on deck today, and my big run is on Wed (7 miles!!!) - but I know if i just stay slow and steady, I'll get it done. Not being afraid of it is a nice feeling for a change. Scale is staying steady, and I'm guessing as my endurance increases again, I'll be in this plateau while my body adjusts to the increase and demand again. Once it adjusts, things will move....i'm happy to be back on track though...like a huge relief.

Petra – definitely refrigerate the flax, especially living in such a hot and humid climate. I think you’ll find it makes a big difference. I remember all those little concerts as an elementary student, too. I played violin. But there is no way I could still play one now. Cool that you can still pick up your flute! How is the increased protein working out for reduced snacking? I’m glad that the goat stew worked out! Thanks for posting the websites; I liked the eatwild one. There’s a few farms in my area on there, so that’s neat. Maybe I’ll have to look into getting some meat. One even has goat, but I don’t think I’ll be making that…

WeightLossWanted – I love your new avatar! What a great picture; you look great! What a bummer about your car and your prescriptions. I hope it all works out this week! I agree with Petra – try changing your scale’s batteries… If that doesn’t work, I think I’d toss it. Thanks for getting the new week started for us! I’m so glad to hear that your bloodwork is getting better; that’s huge! And no, I can’t believe that January is almost behind us… wow!

LambChop – I hear you re: the size of the cello. Imagine having to haul two of them around in your car! Plus, I have to drive my boys to school and pick them up 3x a week, which is definitely not my preference. But, it’s a beautiful instrument and I do enjoy hearing the music in the house. You can’t make the cello sound bad, unlike the violin! I hope this coming week is less emotional for you. It’s so great to see you back to running again!

Marie – how nice, a little cone per night! I’m really enjoying my slow loss because it leaves room for these little splurges or my little mistakes. I was pleased to find that despite my cookie and ice cream yesterday, I’m only up 0.4 for the weekend, which still makes being down a pound feel completely doable. Congratulations on your pound lost!! You are so very close, and I read that when you’re close like that, each pound makes a big difference. Are you finding that? It’s nice that your DIL get along well and do things together. My MIL came over yesterday for my boys to run a little restaurant they created (the site of their soda fiasco), and DH is out of town. It’s nice that we get along. That’s funny that you read my post to your DH! You two sound very close and you are such a neat person; it’s too bad we don’t live closer!

RedHookMom – welcome! I went to college in “lovely rural NY” and it was so beautiful! Such a huge state, though, so probably nowhere near you. I went to Hamilton College in Clinton. What a happy time of my life! Too funny about walking the dogs in high heels! I guess it’s another example of not jumping to conclusions…

AnnieDrews
– great job on the ab slider! I’m glad to see that you are feeling great with the 4 pound loss. It’s very motivating, eh?

Trcard – I love your new avatar – you look great! Congratulations on being down 8 pounds; that is great!! I’m sure you’ll see some additional great results if you start exercising, too. I’m also historically low on iron. What have you done to improve yours? I just take an iron pill each day, in addition to my regular vitamin.

Petra and Marie – include me in the list of people not getting enough protein naturally! I just don’t eat a lot of meat. Of course, there are other sources and I try to incorporate those, but primarily I gravitate to fruits and veggies. I do add protein powder to my hot cereal each morning, which hopefully counts for something.

PeanutsMom – I hope you had a great weekend, and that this week has less stress than last for you.

AZManatee – I hope you’re feeling better from your throat infection! Absolutely, take the 2 pounds and run! I hope you’re able to keep them off… sometimes that’s hard after being sick.

LoriAnn – Congrats on your 14 pound loss!! I’m glad things are clicking along for you… Just post when you want to and can… we’ll be here!

Tigga – I’m sorry that you’re bummed about the pound… I guess it’s a matter of perspective. I’m thrilled by a pound! My advice for a week of travel is to drink a lot of water and to stop at a nearby grocery to get some easy-to-eat fruits and vegetables for snacks / meals on the go. Some supermarkets have really big salad bars that can be great in your situation. Good luck!

CruiseCAT – I hope things are well with you. Are you coming home soon?

ICUWishing – I hope things slow down for you this week…

Here, DH is away all week, and while I miss him, I do usually do better weight-wise when he’s not around. Not that he’s a bad influence or anything, but that’s how it works out. So, it’s just me and the boys, who got the day off from school today for a teacher in-service day. Nothing too exciting going on. I’m just happy to be slowly moving along with my loss. I cleaned my closet over the past few days and came up with a lot of “new” tops and sweaters that I haven’t worn in a long time. So, that’s fun. Fortunately I still like my old taste! I have 7 pairs of size 12 pants that don’t fit. I’m going to try them on in another 5 pounds (5 weeks??) to see if they fit then. It seems that that is where I settled in the past. I came up with 7 pairs of size 12, 4 pairs of size 10, and 1 pair of size 8.

Tigga- just missed you...1 pound is like 4 sticks of butter melted off of your body! Celebrate it, don't feel cheated...traveling, don't use it as an excuse, choose fruit for snacks/dessert, grilled meats, salads, ask for steamed veggies in place of fries (most places will happily do that for you) - keep a safe snack handy in your purse, so you don't grab something for "ease"....gum can keep your mouth busy, as can water, a cup of ice, etc... and plan ahead where you can.

Hello everyone! Nice to be back after a break from the board for the weekend. I try not to spend too much time online on weekends, just take a peek at Facebook and keep my food diary.

I weighed in this morning and showed a 0.8 weight loss. I had hoped for more, but am happy to have NOT GAINED considering my weekend eating. I did plan around the big meals I knew were coming and ate wisely the rest of the time and am very happy to at least have lost close to a pound. (NOTE TO SELF: Tell fiance smothered pork chops are something I can only eat VERY OCCASIONALLY!)

So back to checking in here today and during the week. Keeping my food diary and so far, so good for today. Didn't have time to plan supper this evening. We may go out where I can eat something good, yet healthy. Have to visit the grocery store, too.

Have a great day everyone!

Kathi, are you stuck with one pharmacy? We have several in our tiny town that do the $4 generick prescriptions. I bet you might as well and others might be on the bus system.

Lamb, a 7 mile run on Wednesday??? I think I’d call in sick.

Newleaf, I love the cello. Just think your boys can play duets with that beautiful instrument. I don’t think I’d want to haul two or them around town but I’m sure it’s worth it. And I am very thankful we get along. We actually talked of deep matters (personal/family) and it felt right. I wasn’t close to my MIL when DH and I first got married but after 26 years, we’ve brideged the gap. I believe I was to blame as I was too young and stupid to realize what a treasure she is. I think it’s cool your MIL plays with your kids. My parents as well as DH’s never did that. I love playing with my grandson. Your MIM got that and it’s so great for MIL and your boys. I notice daily fluctuations in weigh now. I never did before so I think what you’ve heard is right. I also thought losing the “last 5” was a bunch of nonsense. I think way different now as this last 5 has been the hardest and I’m not doing anything different. I’d increased my exercise length to make up cals needed difference from weighing less. That didn’t make much difference. I can definitely tell that maintenance will be no different than losing because my caloric needs are nearly the same. And ENJOY your “new” sweaters and tops. You sure do have the entire gamut of jean sizes.

BTW, I’m a football fan person. “Fresh set of downs” is something I’ve heard all my life. The last two weeks I’ve woken up and thought (or even said) “Yeah a fresh set of calories”. I do believe I’m cracking up.

I’m with Newleaf on having DH away is so much simpler to manage my calories/weight. My DH isn’t a bad influence either but…. I do better when he’s away.

DH did the 1.5 mile walk this morning trudging though ~8” of snow. That was so fun. Huskies look so pretty in the pristine white. Of course now there’s yellow along the path.

I walked 1/5 mile today at lunch. The wind was howling or I would have walked a bit more. Am going to try to work more of this into my schedule.

Marie-I remember you mentioned how much you love the elliptical. Have you always loved exercising or has it grown on you? I have always been pretty sedentary and have never exercised as a habit. I used to walk a lot before I had kids, and enjoyed that, but don't have as much time for that anymore. I really, really want to enjoy exercising. I don't have any desire to do exercise videos or to join a gym. I want to use the elliptical that I have! How did you get to the point that you enjoyed it? I know it will only be better for me in the longrun, but can't get past the point of dreading it. The first time I tried to get in the habit of using it, I could do no longer than 10 minutes at a time. Any ideas?

P.S. I do have asthma, I do have arthritic knees (surgery twice on the right one), and of course am overweight. I feel like I subconsciously use these as excuses to myself when I know in my heart that all 3 will be improved by my exercising!!

Thanks for reading.

there's a big ole honkin' fresh roll on the counter -- and i'm trying to justify why it wouldn't be a big deal to have it...i mean, i have a run scheduled today, right? and I get bread before - but i get a piece of dry multigrain toast before my run, not a fresh kaiser roll slathred in butter....

I know my mind wants it more than my body does...so i'm here, instead of standing in the kitchen staring at the roll on the counter, which i've spent enough time doing this morning all ready.

---

Annie- that's nice to take a break from the internet...it really does suck you in and consume so much of our time - glad you lost and didn't gain

Marie- LOL, I wish I could - but if i want to be able to consistently be able to run 13, i better knock a 7 miler out of the park first, right? LOL - yikes on all that snow! Glad you're keeping it in OR, and NJ only got rain today. We always used to sing the "don't eat snow where the huskies go" ditty, haaaa. yellow snow.

not Marie, but I still FORCE myself to start moving each and every time...this is what it sounds like in my head

I don't want to...this sucks...but i'm tired...man, why am i doing this....blah, boring....

then once i'm started - i'm so glad i started, and go -- woohoo, when i finish this, I don't have to do it again until XX day! and then i'm proud of myself when i'm done....

hopefully she'll have a brilliant answer that will shine light and sunshine on all of us, because as of now - i do it because of how i'll feel AFTER i do it.

no. not so great job.

I just ate the roll. It can't stare at me anymore...

I have 2 choices...feel guilty and beat myself up

Get over it, and move on <---------- my choice. it's just a piece of bread. life is not over as we know it.

LambChop, good choice, just move on... Enjoy your run today! I'm giving myself until 3:00pm and then I need to go change and force myself onto the stairmaster...

Thanks, Lambchop, for the inspiration on exercising. I'll try to get that kind of mindset.

I love the attitude here! Just move on when we trip up. Don't dwell on things. That's what slows us down, huh?

it's wasted energy Annie...we're meant to make mistakes, learn from them and move forward....

in our 40's, we know enough to care - but we also know enough not to stress over the little things
