These days I rarely watch tv live, I usually pvr a show and fast forward thru the commercials. Tonight I am watching tv live as the Stanley Cup finals are on, (I LIKE hockey, and LOVE Don Cherry!) and every second commercial is about food. And not just food, but sweets, sugary stuff, huge portions, argh
How is anyone supposed to eat normally with this stuff on. I am having HUGE cravings, don't know if I can watch the whole game now. I think the PVR has been helping my weight loss, (who knew?).
lol I know! In the gym where i go they have t.v's on the work out machines and when I'm working out and a commerical comes on and its about food I just want to die. Im like omg really?

Tell me about it!! My husband is like their target audiance too! EVERY time he sees a commercial for some junk food item, he gets all drooly and wants it. He'll get me going, cause he really doesn't like to eat alone, and start talking about getting something junky!
If its been awhile since I've had a cheat, I'll let him talk me into it, but lately its every FREAKING DAY!!!
If I manage to talk him out of going for something, than he'll scrounge around the kitchen for something to replace that craving. He'll kill a whole meal plan or two trying to fill the craving for junk food! By the time he's done, he may as well had the junk in the first place and saved calories and food.
We've cut back on the amount of tv watched, and it seems to help a bit.
Just one of the many reasons why I don't watch TV,
seriously, I watch maybe 5 minutes a month at the most, and that's usually the weather channel,
bleh, I find it very boring
I don't notice it as much... mainly because my family mutes the tv during the commercials... and I personally just don't watch that much tv. (because my mom has her shows, my dad has his, and my little bro has his... and by the time theirs are all done... there's no time for me to watch anything... so I buy Gilmore Girls and go to Hulu and watch Monk and House. )
I knew that I had reached a turning point when that type of commercial made me faintly nauseous. All those greasy looking burgers, all those unnecessary calories and mystery ingredients...blech.
I tune them out if I'm not on DVR and can fast forward.
Well it happened last night... We saw an ad for Taco Bell and my hubs made a Run for the Boarder, with my blessing.
Time to brush myself off and try again today I guess. I think I'll try only watching recorded tv from now on. Gotta love that fast forward!!
These commercials & their nearly pornographic appeal & their effect on my senses are another reason why I don't trust myself to follow the concept of intuitive eating.
How do I know I am craving something because my body & soul really **needs** it, when it's very possible that my mind is simply bringing forth an image that a really well-filmed & scripted voiced-over commercial implanted there sometime earlier?
Because I know my cravings are far from rational or motivated by a subconscious need for nutrients & variety. They are highly emotional, influenced by memory & desire & the need for feelings of elation, love, comfort, coziness, sensuality -- you name it. And food in advertisements has a superficial glamor that evokes all those things.
I avert my eyes from food porn like a Victorian prude. "Mustn't ... look ..."
