I've read that one should have carbs before, and protein after if you are weight lifting. The carbs give energy that is utilized during the workout. The protein helps with healing and building muscle afterwards. Carbs before-a banana, or just about any fruit, is good for this. Usually I would use a protein shake after. Wal Mart sells cheap protein powder in varying flavors. If you don't have extra cash for p-powder, egg whites are cheap and work just fine.
