Looking for support and motivation. I'm 35 years old and weigh 224 lbs. I just started walking/jogging today to lose around 80 lbs. I thought there was a runner's forum on here, but I can't find it. Anyways, I'm also planning to do my 10-Minute Trainer DVD's in addition to the walk/jog combo.
And has anyone had weight loss success with jogging to lose that amount of weight? How long did it take you? How did your body look afterward? Were you pleased with the results? I have LOTS of questions for you!!!!
Hi, I am wondering if you have heard of the group called Couchto5K? I just joined it last week, and I am loving it!! I did not think that I would like to jog, but felt it would be a great way to speed up my motabolism, and the program is really easy! Hope this was a help for you...
I started walk/jogging April 11, 2010. When I started I was 250 and today I am 230.....so 20 lbs down so far. I started very slowly, could barely jog for 2 min. Now I can jog for 10 min at a time.......Good luck with your journey. I love what is has done for me. My legs and bottom are already a little firmer and my clothes fit much much better!!
Three years ago, when I was 35, I weighed 275 pounds and when I got to 250 I started building short intervals of jogging into my walks. I sort of did the Couch to 5k plan, but did it at a slower pace. About 6 months later, I had lost around 55 more pounds and was able to my first race, a 10k, not a 5k! I was hooked. All that summer I trained for a half marathon, which I ran at the end of the summer. I also reached my goal weight of 165 and was a serious runner, even becoming a cross country coach. Then I got pregnant and gained back 80 pounds, so now I'm working my way back to get in shape again.
Here's my best running advice: run REALLY slowly at first. So many people start out all gung-ho and try to run fast and then they can't keep it up or it makes them so out-of-breath and miserable that they never want to do it. Honestly, the best way to stick with it and even the best way to get faster in the long run (if that's a goal of yours, and it certainly doesn't need to be -- you can be slow forever if you want) is to run long, slow distances. Obviously you won't run long distances at first, but you can build up to that if you want to. I never though I'd run two feet, but that summer I was doing 10+ miles at a time on the weekend, and I planned to do a full marathon the following year. Now that's delayed!
Hi elaine19! I actually have the program printed out, in case I want to use it. I started out today with walking for 1/3 of a mile, SLOWLY jogging for 1/3 of a mile and walking the last 1/3 of a mile. It felt GREAT!!! I'm going to read over it again to see what will work for me, and I'll definitely check out that group! Thank you!!!
I LOVE setting a goal of a 5K. It will take the focus off of the scale, and put it on something more tangible! Years ago when I was running, my goal was to run a mile nonstop, not so much to go down to a number on the scale. It kept me motivated and fixated on something other than my weight.
You are such an inspiration, and I look forward to actually 'watching' you reach your goal, as I reach mine too! Thanks for the info!
There's a great site called runningahead.com where you can log your runs. I haven't used it in a while, but I used to love it. You can get lots of good info about running from the message boards there too. Most of the people there are seriously hardcore runners, but they often have great advice for beginners. My husband is a longtime track and cross country coach, so I use him for advice too, but I can't run with him because he's super-speedy! (He runs a 10k in about 39 or 40 minutes, for example, and a 5k in 18 or 19 minutes). Back when I was at goal weight and in much better shape, I had a goal of running a 5k under 30 minutes, and I did one in 28! Then I had a goal of running one under 25 minutes, and in training I ran that distance at around 24 minutes. I can't believe I did it now because, for example, last night it took me 41 minutes to run 3 miles, and I could barely make it anyway! But I'll get back there, and you'll reach your goals too!

Okay, LisaMarie71, your husband is a FAST!!!!! Wow...
Thanks for the info. I'll check out that site tomorrow, after I get in my next mile!
I'm going to run a 5K this year! There, I said it...OUT LOUD!!! Now I HAVE to stick to that goal!!! I was watching Losing It With Jillian and watched a woman run a 5K. I began to cry when she got to the finish line, because I pictured myself coming up to the finish line, with my family and friends yelling and cheering for me! I have to do it. I never felt more strongly than I did watching that lady accomplish that.
I weigh 213/214 and I am a jogger and I am 31! At my heighest weight of 250, I started with the elliptical (about 8 years ago) and I could barely do 10 mins. I gradually worked my way up and moved over to the Treadmill.
I am currently able to do a mile in less than 12 mins. I can push myself and go about 2 miles before I need to slow down. I have done 2 5k's so far. (one at 38:50 and the other was a 39:21). I REALLY enjoyed them.
I agree with the PP that said to start off slow. When I first started trying to add some jogging into my walking, I would only do about 30 seconds to 1 minute of jogging at a time. Then I worked up to 2 mins, etc.
