People have already posted a lot of the same tips I would have, but another thing that can be important to keep in mind is that you don't have to make all of these changes all at once (although it will be tempting to try). You can make one change at a time (like giving up soda) and then once you're use to that change make another one (switching to whole grains). I calorie count and my first eating goal was just sticking to my calorie limit, I could eat all the crap I wanted as long as it fit into my day. Once I was comfortable with that then I worked on slowly changing what I was eating (and I'm still working on that). It was easier for me to stick to it because I didn't try to completely change my lifestyle overnight, if I had I would have given up after about 3 days probably.
