Default Just an update

Well, I've been failing pretty miserably. Haven't succeeded in fully quitting smoking and I've gained back 15 pounds since December. Only thing I have been doing well is keeping a 4.0 gpa in my LPN course. I haven't even been washing my face to at least keep the zits at bay lol. Trying to not kick my butt too hard but I'm frustrated (to say the least) with myself. Going to surf 3FC for some inspiration today when I take breaks from doing homework. Anyway, just wanted to let people know I'm not dead lol just lacking discipline.

ouch, bargoo, a little harsh?

ilidawn, maintaining a 4.0 is definitely an accomplishment to be proud of! Quitting smoking and trying to drop weight at the same time (especially during stressful exams and classes) seems like it'd require a pretty overwhelming amount of willpower. Why not tackle the others one at a time?

You can do it!

Sometimes tough love is required but at this moment wasn't exactly the most helpful thing to see when I just finally came back to 3FC. Some people lack sensitivity though for their own reasons. For all I know, she's had a rough life and only knows how to respond in such a manner. That's her issue though, not mine.

I've been focused on schoolwork and neglecting my diet (it's easier to grab what's quick when you're working and going to school full time). So thank you, synchrojo, it's been tough and I'm working at it. I'm just glad I noticed my weight going up before needing another pant size. I know some of the weight is muscle from the exercise I get working clinicals twice a week but I need to do exercise that isn't part of work or nursing school. Working out a proper schedule is difficult when there's practically no time but I'm sure I'll figure something out.

A 4.0 is a huge accomplishment! Congrats!

Instead of trying to actively lose weight, what if you tried to just maintain for a while?

Good luck and welcome back!

Thanks Mozzy! It's a big goal of mine to keep a 4.0 and stay on the Presidential's list throughout the LPN program and keep going to get my RN and a Bachelors degree. My life went on hold after I turned 19 when my mom died so I'm just recently getting my life back on track. I've maintained for about a week now (well, lost a pound but that doesn't really count lol). I'm working on getting pre-made meals ready this evening so I'll be set for the week.

Hi -School can definitly be stressful! Seems like you have a plan in place for your educationWhen do you graduate? Are you from Illinois? just asking cuz of your name.
So sorry to hear you lost your mom...I can't say I know how it feels but that would leave such a huge hole in my heart
I too have made bad choices in life at times and that why I'm losing weight to correct the damage I have done to my body and live a healthier life.
Glad that you came here for support and maybe that will help you make some of the changes that you know you need to do.
I hope you know that everyone here wants you to be healthy and successful.
If you are going into Healthcare you realize what you are doing is not at all good for you.
Im an RN and I would have no problem sharing concerns for your health.
Please take care of yourself we need more future RNs

I know I'm one of those people that once I screw up with anything...I'm done, and give up the rest of the day. Ate a slice of cake? Well now I'm going to also eat the entire box of cereal and also all the ice cream too!

It sounds like you're leaning towards that way of thinking right now, but I just heard a great comparison.

If you started skidding off the highway in your car, would you press the gas and plow off the railing, or would you break and try to correct?

Forgive yourself for the last few months of slipups...and ****, it was Christmas who doesn't gain weight then? You can get back behind the wheel!

Thanks for the support. I'm from Nebraska (spent my childhood in Singapore yet somehow wound up back in Nebraska lol) It's ironic going into healthcare and knowing how unhealthy I am. My whole life I've put myself on the back burner while worrying about and taking care of others. A lot of it is psychological that's needing worked out to improve physically. The car crash comparison is awesome! Putting it that way helps a lot. I started school last September and graduate from the LPN program this October. Hoping to get right into the RN program right after graduating.

studying, losing weight, and quitting smoking are 3 huge things that require a lot of effort and concentration. if you're focusing on one, it's no wonder that the other are suffering... i mean, i can't do that either!! i told myself that i would make an effort to study japanese seriously this year (since i live in Japan and not speaking it well is hurting in some areas of my life... and also my bf is annoyed that i'm constantly using him as a translator... lol) but i still haven't gotten around to it and honestly can't be bothered cuz my number 1 priority is my weightloss right now. also as a smoker, i can't give you any advice on quitting

I think Mozzy's advice was good though. why not focus on maintaining until you graduate? then you can start taking a more active stance in your weightloss?

good luck!

Weight loss is so hard during nursing school; a lot of people gain weight due to the stress and time constraints. I wish you luck, just get back up on the horse and try again. The way I did it was to find a workout buddy. When we told our bosses our availability for work, we built an extra hour onto the end of the day. We used that time to run on the ellipticals at the on-campus gym, and we used our flashcards to quiz each other while running. We also took turns bringing in salads for lunches to keep ourselves from overindulging on fast food during breaks.

We don't like to admit our limitations to ourselves, but maybe nursing school, weight loss, and quitting smoking all at once is a bit much for you? You might have to pick 2, and put one on the back burner for now. I'm not saying to give up or forget about it, but it might be more realistic to quit smoking, study, and try to concentrate on eating healthfully but not necessarily on weight loss, and buy yourself a gym membership as a graduation present. Or work on dieting and exercise, study, and devise a plan to cut back your smoking in a progressive manner while with an eye toward stopping altogether the day you graduate.

Maybe I'm being too hard on myself that I can't do it all at once. I'm going to keep going full throttle with school but cut back a bit at a time on smokes (I'd succeed going cold turkey on weekends but be back to smoking by Monday afternoon). I don't live in a safe neighborhood to go for walks (drug dealers and such) and barely getting my bills paid so I can't afford the gym. I'm trying to figure out good at home exercises that aren't high impact. My right leg is still weak from breaking it a little over a year ago and I don't want my downstairs neighbor to get annoyed with jumping about lol. I wonder, does anyone know if yoga works well for losing weight or is it just more for toning and flexibility?
