You just have to work your way up to it... Look at my stats... I started heavier and I have been working out from day one... I started with 12 minutes on the elliptical and then rode the bike for the rest of the time I was at the gym (typically an hour) I added more time and one day I stayed on for 45 minutes somehow because I wasn't thinking about and I was distracted... The elliptical is better for your joints than running...you just have to work up to doing it for longer periods of time.

could you do weight training/pilates/yoga instead of cardio? i can understand how intense cardio could cause some joint pain, but i never experienced it myself. maybe couple 30 minutes of walking with some kind of aerobic activity?

I think I need to focus on food, get that under control and get down to 200lbs before I start to exercise.
Anyone out there think it is possible to lose 40lbs by watching my food only and not working out???
The more you exercise the better your joints are going to feel. I have "rather significant" arthritis in my left knee (in the words of my doctor) and I suspect arthritis (although not as badly) in my right knee, and 1 elbow that will not straighten all the way anymore (tendinitis from 10+ years ago that was never treated, now it's literally locked up), but I still go to the gym, use the treadmill and the elliptical, and do steps at home (on my Wii Fit). I figure, if you can buy groceries, you can do 20 minutes on a treadmill.

i think everyone has given you some great ideas- i also second swimming- its GREAT exercise. the water provides natural resistance and engages all your muscles.
i don't have issues with joints, but i started with the mentality of "i can't do this" because "i'm too heavy still". but i just tried my best. i started with 30 day shred (high impact don't do it!) then i got back into my yoga, and i got better at it, and yeah, i was awkward, it hurt, but it got better, i built strength and stamina as time went on. and so will you.
as everyone mentioned, just move a little more. go for a 30 min walk 3-4 times a week to start. see how it goes. then bump it up to a 45 min walk. then try some low impact stuff, like an exercise bike, rowing (like someone mentioned) or swimming.
talk yourself out of the mental block

good luck!!
